Solo Exploration of Kyoto's Cultural Wonders
Day 6: A Day of Serenity and Culinary Delights in Kyoto
Discover Kyoto's tranquil Philosopher's Path, majestic Heian Shrine, and exquisite dining experiences on a solo adventure.
Finding Peace in Kyoto's Ancient Paths
Today was a day of reflection and exploration, a true immersion into the heart of Kyoto. I embraced the city's serene beauty, wandering along paths frequented by philosophers and indulging in culinary experiences that tantalized my taste buds. It's days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo adventure, to find moments of peace and inspiration in the most unexpected corners of the world.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya. It’s a cozy little spot, and the food was absolutely delicious. The friendly atmosphere, thanks to the warm couple running the place, made it a perfect start to the day. I enjoyed watching them cook; their passion for food was evident in every dish.

With a satisfied stomach, I set out to explore the Philosopher's Path. The Philosopher's Path, a serene stone path in Kyoto's Higashiyama district, meanders alongside a canal lined with cherry trees. Though the cherry blossoms are long gone this time of year, the path still held a captivating charm. The gentle sunlight filtering through the lush greenery created a tranquil ambiance, perfect for introspection. As I strolled along the path, I couldn't help but reflect on the words of Nishida Kitaro, the renowned philosopher who frequented this route, contemplating the essence of existence. It was easy to see why he found solace here; the rhythmic flow of the canal and the rustling leaves seemed to whisper secrets of the universe. It was a bit crowded, but then again, it is a Saturday.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are made not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of our world.
My next destination was the majestic Heian Shrine. The Heian Shrine, built in 1895 to commemorate Kyoto's 1100th anniversary as the capital, is dedicated to Emperors Kammu and Komei. A giant torii gate marks the entrance, leading to spacious grounds and buildings that replicate the Imperial Palace from the Heian Period. The vibrant colors and grand architecture were awe-inspiring. I wandered through the gardens, admiring the meticulously designed landscapes and serene ponds. The Heian Shrine gardens are arranged around a central lake, crossed by a picturesque bridge that seems to float on the water. The gardens are divided into four parts, each representing a different season, with carefully selected plants and flowers to reflect the changing seasons. It's a place where history and nature intertwine, creating a truly unforgettable experience. I spent a good amount of time there taking photos to share with David and Thandi back home.

From the Heian Shrine, I made my way to Nanzen-ji Temple. Nanzen-ji Temple, originally Emperor Kameyama's retirement villa, became a Zen Buddhist temple and stands as one of Japan's most important Rinzai Zen temples. Surrounded by mountains, it houses a sanmon gate, a European-style canal, and various sub-temples. The temple's history is palpable, with architecture dating back to the 17th century. The temple complex was expansive, featuring impressive gates, serene gardens, and even a unique aqueduct that once carried water to the city. I explored the various sub-temples, each with its own distinct character and charm. The Zen gardens were particularly captivating, with their carefully raked gravel and meticulously placed stones evoking a sense of tranquility and contemplation. There was also a wedding photoshoot taking place, so I made sure to stay out of the way. I can only imagine how beautiful the photos will turn out with the scenery.
For lunch, I decided to treat myself to a meal at French Dining Top of Kyoto. Located atop the Rihga Royal Hotel, this revolving restaurant offered panoramic views of the city while I savored exquisite French cuisine. The combination of delectable food and breathtaking scenery was simply divine. The restaurant slowly rotates, offering a 360-degree view of the city. It was fascinating to see Kyoto from such a vantage point, spotting landmarks and hidden gems I had yet to explore. The food was delicious, a perfect blend of French techniques and Japanese ingredients. It was an experience that engaged all my senses, leaving me feeling both satisfied and inspired. I made sure to take a photo of the Kyoto Tower while it rotated around. I'll have to bring David here sometime.

As evening approached, I indulged in a traditional Japanese dinner at Yoshikawa. The restaurant is known for its delicious Japanese delicacies, which have won the tastes of both locals and tourists. A guest even stated that they were told that the ryokan's restaurant is a favorite of Paul McCartney when in Kyoto. Nestled in a serene corner of the city, this restaurant offered a culinary journey through the flavors of Japan. I savored each dish, from the delicate sashimi to the flavorful tempura, appreciating the artistry and precision that went into every preparation. The ambiance was intimate and refined, creating a truly memorable dining experience. The garden was beautiful as well, a calming place to relax and unwind.

To cap off the day, I ventured to Bar Fishbowl for a nightcap. This unique bar featured a mesmerizing display of fish tanks, creating a surreal and captivating atmosphere. It was a quirky little place, filled with colorful fish tanks that created a calming, underwater ambiance. I sipped on a Japanese whiskey, watching the fish swim lazily around their tanks. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I even struck up a conversation with a local who shared some interesting insights about Kyoto's nightlife.
