Kyoto's Timeless Charms

Today was a beautiful immersion into the heart of Kyoto, a day of exploring serene temples, wandering through historic streets, and discovering hidden treasures. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to experience the beauty and history of different cultures, and to share those experiences with you all.

My day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Kizahashi, located in The Thousand Kyoto hotel. It was a delightful start to the day, offering a taste of local flavors and setting a peaceful tone for the adventures ahead. The breakfast set menu included a delicate dashi soup, a seasonal appetizer, and a selection of small dishes featuring Kyoto Uji 'WABISUKE' egg omelet, simmered vegetables, grilled fish of the day, rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

First stop was Tenryu-ji, a Zen temple nestled in the heart of Arashiyama. The temple, founded in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji, is dedicated to Gautama Buddha and is the head temple of the Tenryu-ji branch of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Walking through the temple grounds, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. The Sogenchi Garden, designed by Muso Soseki, was particularly stunning. The garden, which has survived in its original form through centuries of fires and wars, features a central pond surrounded by rocks, pine trees, and the forested Arashiyama mountains. It was easy to see why this garden is considered one of the most beautiful in Japan.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the way the past seamlessly blends with the present.

After soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of Tenryu-ji, I made my way to Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street, a charming lane that transports you back to the Edo period. The street is lined with beautifully preserved wooden machiya townhouses, now housing quaint cafes, artisan shops, and teahouses. As I wandered along the quiet street, I felt like I had stepped back in time. The traditional architecture and rustic ambiance offered a peaceful glimpse into Kyoto's rich history. I explored the various shops, admiring the authentic Japanese crafts and unique souvenirs. It was the perfect spot to pick up a few mementos of my trip.

Later in the afternoon, I visited Kodaiji Temple, an outstanding temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama District. Kodaiji was established in 1606 by Kita-no-Mandokoro, the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's greatest historical figures. The temple belongs to the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism, and its main buildings were constructed in the lavish style of the era of Japan's unification. I was particularly impressed by the temple's gardens, which were designed by Kobori Enshu. The rock garden, consisting of a large field of raked gravel meant to represent the vast ocean, was a sight to behold. The tsukiyama-style garden, featuring a pond, man-made hills, decorative rocks, and beautiful pine and maple trees, was equally stunning.

Before dinner, I stopped by Maiko Antiques Kyoto, a hidden gem in the Higashiyama district. This antique shop is a treasure trove of vintage Japanese toys, retro-futuristic models, and eclectic antiques. I spent hours browsing the shop's extensive collection, admiring the rare and unusual artifacts that captured the essence of Japan's rich cultural tapestry. I even found a few unique items to add to my own collection.

For dinner, I indulged in a memorable teppanyaki experience at Premium Pound Gion. The restaurant, located in the heart of Gion, offers high-quality Japanese beef teppanyaki in a cozy and intimate setting. Chef Yukio, with his 20 years of experience, prepared a mouthwatering Kobe beef steak right before my eyes. The beef was tender and juicy, and the other side dishes were equally delicious. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Kyoto. From the serene temples to the historic streets to the hidden antique shops, every moment was a treasure. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, Shimogamo Shrine, and the Kyoto International Manga Museum. It promises to be another day filled with exploration and discovery.

And, if I'm feeling adventurous, I might even check out WORLD KYOTO, a nightclub, for a taste of Kyoto's nightlife. It's important to experience all facets of a city, after all! But before that, I need a good night's sleep to recharge for another day of adventures. Plus, I need to remember to get a universal power adapter, since I forgot to pack one! And an umbrella, just in case the weather changes.

I’m reminded of something my grandmother used to say back in Chilumba, Malawi: "Travel far, travel wide, but always remember where you come from." It’s a sentiment that rings especially true when I find myself immersed in cultures so different from my own, yet so enriching.

Until tomorrow,
Grace
