A Day of Whispers and Stone Smiles

Kyoto has a way of pulling you into its stories, doesn't it? It's a city where ancient traditions meet the gentle rustling of bamboo leaves, where every corner holds a secret waiting to be discovered. Today was one of those days where I felt utterly lost in the best possible way, wandering through landscapes that whispered tales of old and meeting stone figures that seemed to share a knowing smile.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at The Cellar Kyoto. Fuelling up with a hearty meal was essential for the adventures that lay ahead. I remember back in Chilumba, Malawi, mornings often started with a simple porridge, but here in Kyoto, the culinary experiences are a journey in themselves.

First stop: Arashiyama. The plan was to immerse myself in its famed bamboo forest. I had read countless articles and seen numerous photos, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer magic of standing amidst those towering stalks. The sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting an ethereal glow on everything it touched. It was like stepping into another world, a world where the air hummed with a quiet energy and the rustling leaves whispered secrets to those who would listen. It was moderately crowded, but the energy of the forest was still palpable. The fresh greenery of Arashiyama in May is so refreshing, and the sunlight filtering through the trees felt wonderful.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners where nature and art intertwine.

After wandering through the bamboo grove, I decided to explore more of Arashiyama. I found myself drawn to the Katsura River, where the Togetsukyo Bridge stood majestically against the backdrop of the lush mountains. I took a moment to simply sit by the riverbank, watching the water flow and feeling the gentle breeze on my face. It was a perfect moment of serenity, a reminder to slow down and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. It reminded me of the shores of Lake Malawi, though the landscape here was vastly different.

Lunch called, and Goichi Pizza was the perfect spot. I enjoyed a delicious pizza, a little taste of Italy in the heart of Japan. It was a pleasant change of pace and a reminder that even when travelling, it's nice to have a touch of the familiar.

Next on the itinerary was Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, a hidden gem tucked away in the hills of Arashiyama. This temple is renowned for its collection of 1200 Rakan statues, each carved by different people and possessing its own unique personality. The temple's history is quite fascinating. Originally built in the Higashiyama area around 770, it faced numerous disasters, including floods and typhoons, leading to its relocation to its current site in 1922. In 1955, Kocho Nishimura, a Buddhist statue sculptor and monk, became the head of the temple and initiated its artistic transformation. He invited visitors to carve their own statues under his guidance, resulting in the creation of these 1200 rakan sculptures between 1981 and 1991.

As I wandered through the temple grounds, I was struck by the sheer diversity of the statues. Some were serious, some were smiling, and some were downright quirky. One statue even had a Walkman! It was a testament to the human spirit, a celebration of individuality and creativity. It felt like each statue had a story to tell, a life to share. The moss-covered figures exuded a sense of history and charm, making the temple feel like a living, breathing work of art. I spent hours wandering among them, taking photos and simply soaking in the atmosphere. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

Before heading back to the hotel, I decided to treat myself to a drink at L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its unique cocktails and magical atmosphere. Nestled in Kyoto Kawaramachi, this bar has garnered rave reviews for its imaginative drinks and entertaining bartenders. Apparently, the owner, Chris, has created a truly magical place, treating every customer as a guest in his home. I ordered a cocktail and watched in amazement as the bartender prepared it with flair and showmanship. The drink was delicious, and the atmosphere was electric. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Kyoto has a way of touching your soul, of reminding you of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka, and Yasaka Shrine. I'm particularly excited about Kiyomizu-dera, with its stunning wooden stage and panoramic views of the city. I also intend to do some shopping at the Daimaru Kyoto Store.

I'm also grateful for the chance to share these experiences with you. I hope that my words and photos have inspired you to embark on your own adventures, to seek out the hidden gems that await you, and to embrace the beauty that surrounds us. And perhaps, just perhaps, to visit Kyoto and experience its magic for yourself.

Back at The Screen Hotel, I felt a world away from my usual life in Bristol. Though David and Thandi are constantly in my thoughts, I know this solo journey is something I need to fully embrace. I unpacked my camera and notebook, ready to document the day's adventures, feeling a sense of fulfillment that only travel can bring. It's moments like these that remind me why I started this blog in the first place—to share the beauty of the world and inspire others to explore.

I forgot to pack a universal power adapter, which is proving to be a bit of a challenge. Charging my devices is now a strategic exercise. And, of course, the umbrella I left behind would have been useful, considering the occasional showers.

But even with these minor inconveniences, my heart is full. Kyoto has a way of making you forget about the little things, of drawing you into its enchanting embrace. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Until then, sayonara from Kyoto!
