Whispers of Ancient Kyoto

Today was nothing short of magical. From the moment I woke up, I felt the pull of Kyoto's ancient spirit, a call to explore its historic streets and serene temples. With my friends, I set out to discover the wonders that this city holds, eager to soak in the culture and capture the essence of Kyoto's timeless beauty.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO. This restaurant, housed in a beautifully renovated traditional building, once belonged to the renowned Japanese painter Seiho Takeuchi. The atmosphere was serene, and the Italian-inspired breakfast was a delightful fusion of cultures. Maximilian would have loved the architecture here! I made a mental note to find a similar blend of Nordic and modern design for our home in Hannover. The restaurant was surrounded by a lush garden, providing a tranquil start to our day. We enjoyed pastries and coffee, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead.

After breakfast, we made our way to Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto's most celebrated temples. As we approached, the vibrant vermilion of the Niomon Gate stood out against the clear winter sky. The temple, founded in 778, has a rich history, serving as a place of compassion and spiritual solace for over 1250 years. The climb up the hill was invigorating, and the views of Kyoto unfolding below were simply breathtaking.

The beauty of Kiyomizu-dera lies not only in its stunning architecture but also in the sense of peace and history that permeates every corner.

The main hall, a National Treasure of Japan, was a sight to behold. The wooden stage, constructed without the use of any nails, jutted out dramatically from the hillside, offering a panoramic view of Kyoto. I took a moment to close my eyes and imagine what it must have been like centuries ago, with people gathering here for religious ceremonies and celebrations. It’s amazing to think that this very stage has been a focal point for countless generations. The phrase 'to jump off the stage at Kiyomizu' is akin to 'taking the plunge' in English, a testament to the temple's enduring impact on the local culture.

We then visited the Otowa Waterfall, where we each drank from one of the three streams, said to bestow health, longevity, and success in studies. Choosing just one was a bit of a challenge, but I opted for health, hoping to keep up with Astrid's boundless energy when we return home. The water was refreshingly cold and tasted pure, as if infused with the very essence of the mountain.

Next, we wandered through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, two historic streets leading to Kiyomizu-dera. These charming, cobblestone lanes are lined with traditional wooden buildings housing quaint shops, teahouses, and restaurants. Sannenzaka, meaning 'three-year slope,' and Ninenzaka, 'two-year slope,' are said to bring misfortune if you fall on them – a superstition that added a touch of excitement to our stroll. We were careful to watch our steps, not wanting to tempt fate!

The atmosphere was magical, with the gentle sounds of traditional music drifting from the shops and the tantalizing aromas of local delicacies filling the air. I couldn't resist trying some matcha ice cream, a Kyoto specialty, which was both rich and refreshing. My friends purchased some beautiful handmade crafts, perfect souvenirs to remind us of our time here. It felt like stepping back in time, experiencing Kyoto as it might have been centuries ago. The absence of power lines and modern vehicles added to the illusion, creating an authentic and immersive experience.

For lunch, we stopped at Yasakadori Enraku, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine, particularly its Oden. The restaurant offered private rooms, providing a cozy and intimate setting. The Oden was a delightful medley of flavors, with each ingredient simmered to perfection in a light yet deeply infused broth. We savored dishes like Jaco (sardine eggs) on rice and red konjac, each bite a testament to the chef's meticulous cooking techniques. It was a welcome respite from the bustling streets, a chance to relax and recharge before continuing our exploration.

In the evening, we indulged in a delightful dinner at Gion Mikaku, a Wagyu specialty restaurant that has been serving exquisite beef since 1927. The restaurant is located along the Shirakawa River, offering breathtaking seasonal views. We opted for the Teppan-yaki steak, made from unbred Tajima female cattle, known for its exceptional quality. The chef expertly prepared the steak right before our eyes, searing it to perfection on a hot griddle. The meat was incredibly tender and juicy, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was an unforgettable culinary experience, a true highlight of our day. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was both elegant and welcoming.

To cap off our evening, we ventured to L'Escamoteur, a unique bar known for its French bartender and magical cocktails. Tucked away in Kyoto Kawaramachi, this bar felt like stepping into another world. The bartender not only mixed incredible drinks but also performed magic tricks, adding an element of surprise and delight to the experience. The atmosphere was lively and engaging, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. I enjoyed a custom cocktail, expertly crafted to my tastes, while my friends marveled at the bartender's skillful illusions. It was a truly memorable evening, a perfect ending to a perfect day.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Kyoto has a way of captivating the soul, of transporting you to another time and place. The blend of ancient traditions and modern sensibilities is truly unique, creating an experience that is both enriching and unforgettable. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Arashiyama, including the Bamboo Forest and Tenryu-ji Temple. I am eager to see what other treasures Kyoto has in store for us.

The city is also celebrating Setsubun this month, with various shrines and temples holding events to ward off evil spirits and welcome the beginning of spring. It’s fascinating to witness these cultural traditions firsthand, to see how the past continues to shape the present in Kyoto.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made sure to jot down all the day’s highlights in my travel journal. These memories are precious, and I want to ensure that I can relive them whenever I please. I also double-checked our itinerary for tomorrow, making sure we have everything we need for our trip to Arashiyama. With a smile on my face and a heart full of joy, I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the wonders that await us in the days to come.
