Day 11: A Day of Serenity and Shopping in Kyoto: Temples, Parks, and Thrifting
Discover Kyoto's serene temples, beautiful parks, and unique thrifting scene on a day filled with cultural immersion and delightful finds.
Kyoto's Quiet Charms
Today was a beautiful blend of tranquility and exploration here in Kyoto. The city continues to surprise me with its ability to balance the ancient with the modern, the sacred with the everyday. I felt a deep sense of peace wandering through temples and parks, followed by the thrill of the hunt at a local vintage shop. It was a day of contrasts that perfectly captured the essence of Kyoto.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar. I know, I know, Indian food in Japan? But after several days of traditional Japanese cuisine, Maximilian and I were craving something different. MUGHAL came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The flavors were authentic, the naan was fluffy, and it was a delightful change of pace. I even dared to try a spicy curry, something I usually avoid, and it was surprisingly delicious. Astrid would have loved the naan, I am sure. I made a mental note to try recreate it at home in Hannover.
After breakfast, we headed to Shorenin Temple. It was a short subway ride and a pleasant walk to the temple grounds. Shorenin is known for its serene atmosphere and beautiful gardens, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The temple was once a residence for Emperor Toba and his son, and you could feel the history in the air. The fusuma paintings by Hideki Kimura, with their vibrant blue lotus motifs, were particularly striking.

Walking barefoot through the temple halls, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The gardens were meticulously manicured, with raked gravel, moss-covered stones, and perfectly pruned trees. It was easy to lose myself in the beauty and tranquility of the space. I was particularly taken by the large camphor tree near the entrance, a silent guardian watching over the temple grounds. I took a moment to reflect on my grandmother's stories of Icelandic folklore, tales of hidden folk and sacred spaces. There is something similar in the air here, a sense of reverence and connection to something beyond the everyday.
To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.
Next on the agenda was Maruyama Park. It was a beautiful day, perfect for a stroll through the park. Even though it's still early March, I could see signs of spring emerging. Some of the plum trees were already in bloom, their delicate pink blossoms adding a touch of color to the landscape. I’ve read that Maruyama Park is famous for its cherry blossoms, and I can only imagine how stunning it must be when they are in full bloom later this month. I made a mental note to tell my readers to visit in late March or early April to experience the full spectacle. I’ve also read that the Higashiyama Hanatoro Festival transforms Maruyama Park into an illuminated wonderland in March. It must be a stunning walk and an ideal way to explore the park and the surrounding area.

The park was bustling with activity. Families were picnicking under the trees, couples were strolling hand-in-hand, and artists were sketching the scenery. It was a lively and vibrant atmosphere, a welcome contrast to the serenity of Shorenin Temple. We found a quiet spot by a pond and sat for a while, simply enjoying the sunshine and the sounds of nature. The air was crisp and clean, and I felt a sense of rejuvenation wash over me. I thought of Maximilian and Astrid back home, and I wished they could be here to share this moment with me. Astrid would have loved running around the park, chasing the pigeons and collecting fallen leaves. I promised myself to bring them back here someday.
After Maruyama Park, we visited Chionin Temple, another impressive and historically significant site. Chionin Temple is the headquarters of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, founded by Honen, and the temple complex is vast and imposing. The Sanmon gate, the main entrance to the temple, is the largest of its kind in Japan and is truly awe-inspiring. I was fascinated by the history of the temple, learning about Honen's teachings and the temple's role in spreading Pure Land Buddhism. I also learned that the temple flourished under the patronage of the Tokugawa Shoguns. The Mieido hall, where Honen originally built his hermitage, was particularly moving. It's amazing to think that this site has been a place of worship and spiritual practice for over 800 years.

One of the highlights of Chionin Temple was the garden, which offered panoramic views of Kyoto. It was a breathtaking sight, and I could see why the garden is designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty. I also learned that Chionin Temple is home to Japan's largest temple bell, weighing 74 tons. I can't imagine the sound it must make when it's rung, it requires seventeen monks to ring the bell at New Year.
For lunch, we decided to try Hyoto Shijo Karasuma, a restaurant specializing in shabu-shabu, a Japanese hot pot dish. I had read rave reviews about the restaurant, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a calming atmosphere. We opted for the Kyo shabu set, which included a variety of appetizers and the main hot pot meal. The ingredients were incredibly fresh and high-quality, and the service was impeccable. The staff was friendly and accommodating, making sure we understood how to prepare the shabu-shabu properly. I particularly enjoyed the yellowtail and broiled mackerel, and the dashi shabu was a truly unique experience. It was the perfect way to warm up on a chilly afternoon.

In the late afternoon, I indulged my passion for thrifting at Harajuku Chicago Kyoto Store. This used clothing store is a treasure trove of unique and affordable finds. I spent hours browsing through the racks, searching for that perfect vintage piece. The store offers a wide array of fashionable pre-loved garments and accessories, reflecting both modern trends and vintage flair. I was particularly drawn to the kimono section, where I found a beautiful silk kimono for a reasonable price. I also picked up a few other vintage pieces, including a retro dress and a pair of funky sunglasses. It was a fun and satisfying shopping experience, and I left the store feeling like I had discovered some hidden gems. I know Astrid would love to go through the thrift store with me, she loves playing dress up.

Finally, for dinner, we went to Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store, a restaurant specializing in tonkatsu, a Japanese pork cutlet dish. I had heard that Katsukura is one of the best tonkatsu restaurants in Kyoto, and I was excited to try it. The restaurant was tucked away in a small alley, adding to its charm. The entrance was unassuming, but the restaurant itself was quite large and bustling with activity. I ordered the signature tonkatsu, and it was cooked to perfection. The pork was tender and juicy, and the breading was crispy and light. It was served with a variety of sauces and condiments, allowing me to customize the flavor to my liking. The meal was incredibly satisfying, and I left the restaurant feeling full and content. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring and discovering Kyoto.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible city. Kyoto is a place that nourishes the soul, stimulates the senses, and offers a glimpse into a rich and fascinating culture. Tomorrow, I am planning to visit the Kyoto Railway Museum and the Nishiki Market, and maybe grab a drink at The Common One Bar Kyoto. I can't wait to see what new adventures await me.
Until then, takk fyrir (thank you) for reading!
