Echoes of Heian in Uji

Today, my friends and I ventured beyond Kyoto's familiar streets to the charming city of Uji. Known for its exquisite green tea and historical significance, Uji promised a day filled with cultural immersion and serene beauty. As a librarian with a deep love for literature and history, I was especially excited to delve into the world of 'The Tale of Genji,' a classic of Japanese literature.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ajikyu in Kyoto. The izakaya was indeed timeless and homely, as I read somewhere. It felt like stepping into someone's home, with the seating area and kitchen crammed into a tiny space. The handwritten daily menu added to the charm. We started with grilled fish, which was recommended by the owner. It was a delightful start to our day.

Our first stop was Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple, initially built as a countryside retreat villa for the powerful politician Fujiwara no Michinaga, was converted into a temple by his son in 1052. As we approached, the Phoenix Hall came into view, its elegant form mirrored in the surrounding pond. It’s a sight that graces the back of the Japanese ten-yen coin, and seeing it in person was truly special. The intricate details of the architecture and the serene atmosphere transported us back to the Heian period. I could almost imagine the nobles of old strolling through the gardens. The Phoenix Hall, with its phoenix statues perched on the roof, seemed to embody the elegance and grace of that era.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Inside the Phoenix Hall, we admired the statue of Amida Buddha, a masterpiece of Buddhist art. It's amazing that the Phoenix Hall has survived fires and calamities over the centuries, making it one of the few original wooden structures from the Heian Period. We also explored the Hoshokan Museum, which houses many of the temple's treasures, including the original temple bell and phoenix roof ornaments. It was fascinating to see these artifacts up close and learn more about the temple's history.

Next, we strolled through Uji Park, a picturesque oasis along the Uji River. The park was alive with families enjoying picnics and couples taking leisurely walks. The cherry trees were starting to bloom, adding a touch of pink to the landscape. We crossed the Kisen Bridge, taking in the stunning views of the river and surrounding hills. The air was fresh and clean, and the sound of the flowing water was incredibly soothing. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me as we wandered through the park. I could see why this place was so beloved by locals and visitors alike.

For lunch, we chose Hanasaki in Uji. The reviews I had seen mentioned the restaurant's refined and innovative Japanese cuisine. We opted for a traditional Kaiseki meal, which was served in a private room overlooking a small garden. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. I particularly enjoyed the miso-glazed fish, which was cooked to perfection. The service was impeccable, and the staff were happy to explain each dish to us. It was a truly memorable dining experience.

In the afternoon, we visited the Tale of Genji Museum, dedicated to Murasaki Shikibu's masterpiece. As a librarian, I was in my element! The museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Heian court and the characters of the novel. Exhibits included detailed models of Heian-era costumes and residences, as well as interactive displays that brought the story to life. A short film based on the Uji chapters of the novel was particularly captivating, immersing us in the tragic love stories that unfold in this region.

The museum focused on the Uji Chapters and the main character Hikaru Genji, conveying their stories through models and videos for easy understanding. I was particularly impressed by the full-sized reconstruction of an ox carriage. The museum also showed original video works, including Ukifune that delves into the world of the Uji Chapters with Ukifune as the heroine. It was a truly immersive experience that deepened my appreciation for this timeless classic. It was fascinating to learn about the influence of 'The Tale of Genji' on Japanese culture and art. I felt a renewed appreciation for the story and its enduring appeal.

Before heading back to Kyoto, we stopped by Japan Culture & Character Shop Guf 京都店. While I am not usually one for character goods, I found myself drawn to the unique and quirky items on display. The store was filled with character goods, from popular Japanese works such as Pokemon, Godzilla, Dragonball, One Piece and Neon Genesis Evangelion, to Marvel and Disney. I ended up buying a small Totoro figurine for Astrid, knowing she would love it. It was a fun and lighthearted end to our day of cultural exploration.

For dinner, we returned to Kyoto and dined at Nishikawa. This restaurant is known for its refined and innovative Japanese cuisine. We chose the omakase menu, which featured a variety of seasonal dishes. Each course was a culinary masterpiece, showcasing the chef's skill and creativity. The atmosphere was elegant and sophisticated, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploring Uji.

As I reflect on our day in Uji, I am struck by the city's unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the serene gardens of Byodoin Temple to the captivating world of 'The Tale of Genji,' Uji offered a wealth of experiences that enriched my understanding of Japan's rich heritage. I am grateful for the opportunity to have explored this hidden gem with my friends, and I know that the memories we made today will stay with me for years to come.

Tomorrow, we're heading back into Kyoto to explore the Heian Shrine, the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, and the Murinan Garden. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at the Turquoise Bar in the evening. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to knit another row on my Lopapeysa. Good night!
