Hvar's Hidden Charms & Historic Heights

Today was a day of contrasts, blending historical exploration with the simple pleasures of island life. From the heights of the Spanish Fortress to the bustling Hvar Port, and the hidden corners of unique shops and bars, Hvar continued to surprise and delight. It’s amazing how much a single day can hold, especially when you’re open to the unexpected twists and turns that travel inevitably brings.

The day began with a delightful breakfast at Il Porto. I savored a traditional Croatian pastry with a strong coffee, watching the early morning light dance on the harbor. Maximilian would have loved this view; he always appreciates a good harbor scene. Astrid, of course, would have been more interested in finding a cat to befriend. I made a mental note to find a postcard for them both.

Conquering the Spanish Fortress

My first major stop was the Spanish Fortress, or Fortica as it’s also known. The walk up was a bit of a climb, but manageable, with well-maintained paths offering plenty of shade. As I ascended, I imagined the countless soldiers who had once defended this strategic point. Reaching the top, I was rewarded with the most breathtaking panoramic views of Hvar Town and the Pakleni Islands. The cannons stood silent, a reminder of the fortress's defensive past. I spent a good hour simply soaking in the scenery, feeling a sense of awe and gratitude.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

The fortress itself is a fascinating historical site. I explored the museum within its walls, learning about the various periods of Hvar's history and the fortress's role in protecting the island. The Venetian influence is evident, a testament to the island's complex past. Standing on those ancient walls, I felt a connection to the generations who had come before, each playing their part in shaping this remarkable place. I could almost hear the echoes of their voices in the wind.

A Stroll Through Hvar Port

After descending from the fortress, I made my way to Hvar Port. The harbor was bustling with activity, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists, yachts and fishing boats. I watched as ferries came and went, connecting Hvar with other islands and the mainland. The port has always been a vital part of Hvar's identity, serving as a safe haven for sailors and a hub for trade. I imagined what it must have been like in the Middle Ages, when Hvar was an important naval base in the Venetian Empire.

I enjoyed a leisurely walk along the waterfront, taking in the sights and sounds. Street performers entertained the crowds, and the air was filled with the aroma of fresh seafood from nearby restaurants. I stopped to admire the Riva, the town's main promenade, which dates back to 1554 and is considered one of the best-preserved coasts in Europe. The architecture is stunning, a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, reflecting Hvar's rich cultural heritage.

Lunch at Zlatna Školjka

For lunch, I chose Zlatna Školjka, a restaurant known for its traditional Croatian cuisine. I decided to try the *gregada*, a traditional fish stew made with white fish, scampi, mussels, and local potatoes. It was absolutely delicious, a true taste of the Adriatic. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere, and the staff were warm and welcoming. I felt like I was dining in someone's home, surrounded by the comforting aromas of home-cooked food.

Retail Therapy at VILEBREQUIN

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at VILEBREQUIN. Though swimwear wasn't on my list of essentials, I couldn't resist browsing the colorful collection of swim shorts and resort wear. The store exuded a cheerful, summery vibe, and I found myself drawn to a beautiful silk scarf with a nautical print. It would be perfect for Astrid, a little something to remind her of my trip. Vilebrequin's story is quite interesting; it was founded in Saint-Tropez in the 70's.

Evening Delights and Secret Finds

As evening approached, I made my way to Plava Alga for dinner. The restaurant boasted a mesmerizing terrace with stunning views of the port. I ordered grilled sea bass with caper sauce, a local specialty. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the sauce was tangy and flavorful. The service was impeccable, with friendly staff offering excellent recommendations for wine pairings.

To cap off the evening, I ventured into the Secret Bar Evil Baby. Tucked away in a hidden corner of Hvar Town, this bar was a true hidden gem. The atmosphere was intimate and eclectic, with dim lighting and carefully curated music. The bartenders were skilled in crafting creative cocktails, and I enjoyed a unique concoction made with local herbs and spirits. It was the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the vibrant nightlife of Hvar.

As I walked back to my accommodation, I reflected on the day's adventures. Hvar had once again exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this enchanting island, and I looked forward to discovering what tomorrow would bring.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Velo Borce and Dominika’s Place. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at Dva Ribara for breakfast, Pošteni Restaurant - Hvar for lunch, and La Bocca for dinner. And perhaps a nightcap at Aloha Bar Hvar?

Before drifting off to sleep, I journaled about the day, capturing the essence of my experiences in words. It's a way to hold onto these memories, to relive them long after I've left Hvar. And who knows, perhaps one day I'll share these stories with Astrid, inspiring her to embark on her own adventures. For now, though, I'll simply cherish the moment, grateful for the beauty and wonder of this incredible journey.

I feel so fortunate to have experienced all that Hvar has to offer. Good night from Hvar!
