Finding Hvar's Heartbeat: Squares, Parks, and Nightlife

Today was a beautiful blend of Hvar's serene daytime charm and its vibrant nightlife. It's amazing how one island can offer such contrasting yet equally captivating experiences. I set out to explore some of the island's hidden gems, enjoy the local cuisine, and perhaps, experience a bit of Hvar's famous nightlife.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Junior. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional flavors were too inviting to resist. I decided to try their seafood pasta, a recommendation I had read about in numerous reviews. It turned out to be the perfect start to the day, the pasta was cooked to perfection, and the seafood was incredibly fresh. It reminded me of the simple, hearty meals my grandmother used to make back in Ísafjörður, Iceland. Fuelled and ready, I ventured out to discover Hvar's hidden corners.

My first stop was Škor square in Stari Grad. Although a bit of a journey from Hvar town, the square was well worth the visit. This charming stone square dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Once a shipyard, it now serves as a picturesque backdrop for various summer cultural events. The name skor comes from the Dalmatian word skver, which means shipyard, reflecting its maritime past. Wandering around Škor Square, I felt transported back in time. The baroque architecture and the peaceful atmosphere made it easy to imagine what life must have been like centuries ago. I could almost hear the echoes of the shipbuilders and the nobles who once called this place home.

From the historical charm of Škor Square, I made my way back towards Hvar town to Hvar Park. Seeking a bit of nature amidst the town’s hustle, the park provided a welcome respite. I took a leisurely stroll, enjoying the shade of the trees and the vibrant colors of the flowers. It was a perfect spot to relax and reflect on my journey so far. I found a quiet bench and spent some time journaling, capturing my thoughts and experiences. As I sat there, I couldn't help but think of Maximilian and Astrid back in Hannover. I imagined Astrid running through the park, her red hair bouncing in the sunlight, while Maximilian and I watched, smiling. I made a mental note to find a similar park in Hannover where we could spend time together as a family.

Lunchtime found me at Restaurant Lucullus Hvar. Tucked away in a quiet side street, this restaurant promised an authentic Dalmatian dining experience. The chef-owner, Antun Matkovic, is known for his jovial nature and hands-on approach to cooking. I opted for the seafood risotto, a local specialty. The risotto was creamy and flavorful, and the seafood was cooked to perfection. The restaurant had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. It felt like dining in someone's home, a welcome change from the more touristy spots in town.

Hvar is an island that knows how to balance its history with its modern spirit, offering something for everyone who visits.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at AtelierMBF. I had read about this shop, known for its unique, handcrafted jewelry. I was immediately drawn to a beautiful silver pendant with a small piece of lava stone. It reminded me of Iceland, of the rugged landscapes and the volcanic energy that shaped my homeland. I knew I had to have it. It would be a perfect memento of my trip and a reminder of where I came from.

As the sun began to set, I prepared myself for Hvar's nightlife. My destination was Kiva Bar, a place I had heard so much about. Known for its lively atmosphere and great music, Kiva Bar promised a night of fun and excitement. As I walked towards the bar, I could already hear the music pumping. The narrow alleyway leading to the entrance was filled with people, a mix of locals and tourists, all eager to experience Hvar's famous nightlife. I ordered a cocktail and found a spot near the bar. The music was a mix of rock and roll favorites, and the atmosphere was electric. I struck up a conversation with a couple from England, and we spent the next few hours dancing and laughing. It was exactly the kind of carefree, spontaneous experience I had been hoping for.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Hvar had to offer. From the historical charm of Škor Square to the natural beauty of Hvar Park, from the culinary delights of Restaurant Lucullus to the vibrant nightlife of Kiva Bar, the island had something for everyone. It was a reminder that travel wasn't just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new things, about immersing oneself in the local culture and connecting with people from all walks of life.

As I prepare for tomorrow, I’m looking forward to exploring more of Hvar’s hidden gems. My itinerary includes visits to Private Hvar and Floriana Park, a coffee at Coffee Snob - Specialty Coffee & Pastry, and perhaps a drink at Central Park Club, Hvar. It’s hard to believe that my solo journey is nearing its end. I'm already cherishing the memories I've made and looking forward to the adventures that tomorrow will bring. Good night from Hvar!

Tomorrow I plan to visit Private Hvar and Floriana Park. I think it will be a welcome change to see more of the natural beauty of the island. I also plan to stop by Coffee Snob - Specialty Coffee & Pastry, because I am always on the lookout for a good cup of coffee. And who knows, maybe I'll end the night at Central Park Club, Hvar.

I am starting to think about what I will do when I return to Hannover. I miss Maximilian and Astrid dearly, and I am looking forward to being back in my familiar surroundings. But I also know that a part of me will always remain in Hvar, with its stunning landscapes, its vibrant culture, and its warm, welcoming people.
