Solo Journey to the Enchanting Hvar Island
Day 12: Farewell Hvar: A Day of History, Flavors, and Lasting Impressions
Discover Hvar's hidden gems on my final day, from Napoleon Fortress to Sveta Nedjelja, savoring local cuisine and gelato.
Saying Goodbye to Hvar
As my solo journey on Hvar Island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I’ve had over the past twelve days. Today was a perfect culmination of everything I’ve come to love about this island: history, stunning landscapes, delicious food, and the simple joy of exploration. It’s a bittersweet feeling, knowing that tomorrow I’ll be heading back to Hannover, but I’m also filled with gratitude for the memories I’ve made here.
The weather was kind, with temperatures hovering around 20°C, perfect for a day of sightseeing. I started my day with a hearty breakfast at Spice Asian Food. It might seem odd to have Asian cuisine in Croatia, but I was curious, and the reviews were promising. It was a delightful change of pace. I opted for some Thai spring rolls, filled with vegetables, and glass noodles, which gave me the energy I needed for the day ahead.
Conquering Napoleon Fortress
My first stop was the Napoleon Fortress, perched high above Hvar Town. The hike up was invigorating, a bit steep but manageable, and the views along the way were simply breathtaking. The air was filled with the scent of pine and herbs, a truly Mediterranean aroma.
As I climbed, I passed small herb gardens and flowering shrubs, each step revealing a new vista of Hvar Town and the Pakleni Islands. I even paused at a small chapel along the way, a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the natural beauty.
Reaching the fortress, I was rewarded with panoramic views that stretched as far as the eye could see. The red-roofed buildings of Hvar Town contrasted against the deep blue of the Adriatic, creating a picture-postcard scene. I explored the remnants of the fortress, imagining the soldiers who once stood guard here during the Napoleonic Wars. Built in 1812, the fortress has a rich history, having been under French, Austrian, and Croatian control.
The journey matters more than the destination.
The fortress itself is also home to the Hvar Observatory, a research outpost devoted to astrophysics. Although it wasn’t open to the public, it added an intriguing layer to the site, blending history with science.

A Taste of Tradition at Konoba Menego
After descending from the fortress, my appetite was calling, and I headed to Konoba Menego for lunch. This family-run restaurant is known for its authentic Croatian cuisine, and it was exactly the kind of local experience I was seeking. The walk to the restaurant was charming, taking me up steps towards the castle, away from the main harbor's hustle and bustle.
The restaurant itself is located in a 14th-century family house, adding to its rustic charm. Inside, the décor was delightful, with exposed brick walls, wooden tables, and antique lighting. It felt like stepping back in time. I ordered the fisherman's platter, a selection of sardines, shark, and anchovies drizzled with olive oil. It was simple, fresh, and utterly delicious. The staff were friendly and welcoming, happy to share insights about the menu and the history of the restaurant. It was more than just a meal; it was a cultural experience.

Coastal Serenity at Sveta Nedjelja - Bay Lučišća
In the afternoon, I decided to venture further afield and visit Sveta Nedjelja - Bay Lučišća. The drive was scenic, winding along the coast with stunning views of the Adriatic. Sveta Nedjelja itself is a small, charming village known for its vineyards and dramatic cliffs.
The road to Lučišća Bay is a bit rocky, but the destination is well worth the effort. This secluded bay is a true hidden gem, boasting crystal-clear waters and a tranquil atmosphere. The pebble beach was bathed in sunshine, and the surrounding pine forests provided a lovely backdrop. I took a refreshing swim in the bay, enjoying the unique combination of warm and cool spring waters. It was the perfect place to relax and soak in the natural beauty of Hvar.

Sweet Indulgence at aROMA Gelato
Back in Hvar Town, I couldn’t resist a stop at aROMA gelato experience Boutique. I had passed this place several times during my stay, and it was always bustling with people. As someone who enjoys Nordic literature, I also appreciate the Italian concept of *La Dolce Vita*, which aROMA embodies.
The gelato was indeed an experience. I chose a scoop of pistachio and a scoop of dark chocolate, both rich and creamy. The flavors were intense, and the texture was perfect. It was a delightful treat to end the afternoon.

A Final Evening at Passarola Restaurant
For my last dinner on Hvar, I decided to splurge a bit and dine at Passarola Restaurant. This restaurant came highly recommended, known for its Dalmatian dishes with a modern twist. The ambiance was enchanting, with an open-air setting and live music.
I started with the octopus salad, followed by the lamb chops. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was outstanding, with the waiter offering excellent wine recommendations and making me feel truly welcome. It was a memorable dining experience, a perfect way to celebrate my time on Hvar.

A Nightcap at Carpe Diem Beach (Maybe)
To cap off the evening, I considered visiting Carpe Diem Beach for a nightcap. However, I knew that the night parties had been stopped due to noise regulations. Instead, I took a leisurely stroll along the Hvar waterfront, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the twinkling lights of the town.

Reflections on a Solo Journey
As I sit here, writing this final blog post from Hvar, I am filled with a sense of contentment. This solo trip has been an incredible experience, allowing me to explore the island at my own pace, discover hidden gems, and immerse myself in the local culture. From the historical heights of Napoleon Fortress to the serene shores of Bay Lučišća, Hvar has captured my heart.
Tomorrow, I will begin my journey back to Hannover, carrying with me memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. While I didn't forget my passport or travel insurance, I did realize I had forgotten my adapter for Croatian power outlets and swimwear, which I could have used. Perhaps it was an excuse to buy new ones. Hvar, thank you for the adventure. Until next time!
I am not sure where my travels will take me next, but I am excited to continue sharing my experiences with you all. Perhaps I will explore more of the Balkans, or maybe venture further afield to Iceland to explore my roots. Until then, takk fyrir og bless (thank you and goodbye)!
