Today was all about immersing myself in the raw, untamed beauty of the Dadès Vallei. The Atlas Mountains stood guard in the distance as I navigated through winding roads and ancient canyons. It was a day of exploration, delicious food, and encounters with the warm-hearted Berber people. I even managed to pick up a little something at a local shop to remind me of this special place.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Achaf in Boumalne Dades. Fueling up with traditional Moroccan fare was essential before tackling the day's adventures. The café was cozy, filled with locals and fellow travelers alike, all eager to start their day in this remarkable valley. I enjoyed some fresh bread, local honey, and, of course, mint tea, a staple that seems to follow me everywhere in Morocco. Sipping the tea, I looked out over the valley, excited for the day to unfold. It’s amazing to think that just a few days ago, I was still in Kelowna, tending to the orchards, and now I'm here, surrounded by such a different kind of beauty.

With breakfast settled, I set off to explore the Dadès Vallei. The valley itself is a masterpiece carved by the Dadès River over millennia. The dramatic gorges, with their towering cliffs and unique rock formations, were a sight to behold. I decided to drive along the famous serpentine road, a photographer's dream with its hairpin turns and panoramic views. I could see why it’s such a highlight for road trips and attracts photographers from all over the world. The red and orange hues of the rocks against the clear blue sky were simply breathtaking.

Next on the agenda was CANYON DADES. I was eager to experience the canyons up close, so I opted for a hike. The trails wound through narrow passages, revealing hidden oases and ancient kasbahs. The sheer scale of the canyon walls was humbling, making me feel small yet connected to the vastness of nature. I even spotted some of the unique rock formations known as the Monkey Fingers, where erosion has sculpted finger-like structures from the red sandstone. The hike was invigorating, and the views were well worth the effort. As I navigated the rocky terrain, I couldn't help but think of Aaliyah back home. She would have loved this hike, always up for a challenge and eager to capture the perfect shot with her camera.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Cafe restaurant Des Amis. The tagine was flavorful, and the ambiance was relaxed and inviting. It’s interesting to see how different cultures interpret the word friends. I recall Aaliyah and I visited a Cafe Des Amis in Parkville, Missouri, that served French cuisine. This Cafe Des Amis, however, served traditional Moroccan cuisine. Refueled, I continued my exploration, heading towards the Gorges du Dades.

The Dades Valley is more than just a destination; it's an experience that touches the soul, connecting you to the rhythms of nature and the warmth of Berber culture.

The Gorges du Dades were even more impressive than I had imagined. The towering cliffs seemed to reach for the sky, creating a sense of awe and wonder. I took my time, soaking in the beauty and capturing as many photos as possible. I thought about sustainable agriculture and how the Berber people have managed to cultivate this land for centuries. Their resourcefulness and respect for nature are truly inspiring.

Before heading back, I made a stop at DADES VERT, a local shop in Kalaat M'Gouna. I wanted to find a small memento of my time in the Dades Valley. The shop was filled with traditional Moroccan products, from argan oil to rosewater. I ended up buying a beautiful, hand-painted ceramic bowl, its intricate designs reflecting the artistry of the Berber people. It will be a perfect reminder of this incredible journey, perhaps to hold some tulips from my garden back in Kelowna, a little piece of Holland transplanted to Canada.

Dinner was at Auberge Miguirne chez Ali, a charming guesthouse known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The auberge was cozy and welcoming, with a warm, family-like atmosphere. I enjoyed a delicious tagine, savoring the flavors of the region. The staff was friendly and helpful, sharing stories about the valley and its people. It was a perfect end to a perfect day. I was also able to learn more about the Auberge Miguirne chez Ali, which is close to the Dadès Gorge and Monkey Paw Canyon. The Auberge offers bike rentals and opportunities for hiking.

As I reflect on the day, I am struck by the incredible beauty and resilience of the Dades Valley. The rugged landscapes, the warm-hearted people, and the delicious food have all left an indelible mark on my soul. It’s amazing how a place so different from my home in Kelowna can feel so familiar and welcoming.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Dades view, Monkey Finger viewpoint and Citadelle dades. I also plan to have breakfast at Café-restaurant Timzzillite Chez Mohamed, lunch at Riad Restaurant Pizzeria Marhaba, and dinner at La famille kasbah. And if I have time, I will visit Cafè restaurant ASANFOU ATBIR. I am excited to see what new adventures await me in this magical valley. I am also grateful for the chance to explore this region on my own terms, embracing the spontaneity and freedom of solo travel.
