Senja's Embrace: A Winter's Tale Continues

The crisp Arctic air nipped at our faces as Aaliyah and I set out for another day of exploration on Senja Island. After a hearty breakfast at Senja Fjordhotell, we were eager to immerse ourselves in the island's stunning landscapes and rich cultural history. Today promised a blend of scenic drives, historical insights, and breathtaking viewpoints, all under the magical, albeit fleeting, winter light.

Our first destination was the famed NASJONAL TURISTVEG Senja, or the Scenic Route Senja. This iconic road trip is a must for anyone visiting the island, and I was excited to finally experience it myself. The route winds along the coast, offering panoramic views of fjords, mountains, and charming fishing villages. Even with the limited daylight hours of January, the views were nothing short of spectacular. The snow-covered peaks glistened in the soft light, and the icy waters of the fjords reflected the pastel hues of the sky. We made several stops along the way, each offering a unique perspective of Senja's beauty.

Next on our itinerary was the Kaperdalen Museum. As an orchard manager with a keen interest in history, I was particularly drawn to this museum, which showcases the Sami culture and the history of the region. The museum is an open-air museum. It has two Sami settlements that were established just after 1900. Walking through the settlement, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like for those early settlers, carving out a life in this remote and rugged landscape. Aaliyah, with her interest in different cultures, was equally fascinated by the stories and artifacts on display.

After delving into the past, we were ready for a more modern marvel: the Bergsbotn utsiktsplattform, or the Bergsbotn viewpoint. This viewpoint is known for its stunning panoramic views of Bergsfjorden and the surrounding mountains. The platform stretches 44 meters long, and offers views of the village of Bergsbotn. As we stepped onto the platform, we were greeted by a vista that truly took our breath away. The winter landscape was a symphony of white and blue, with the snow-covered mountains meeting the icy waters of the fjord. I set up my camera, eager to capture the beauty of this moment, while Aaliyah simply stood in awe, soaking it all in.

Before heading back to our cabin, we made a quick stop at Joker Husøy, a local shop, to pick up some snacks and supplies. It's always a pleasure to support local businesses and get a glimpse into everyday life on the island. We then had dinner at Skagi Senja hotel & lodge - Flo bord og bar.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Senja has to offer, even in the depths of winter. The island's dramatic landscapes, rich cultural history, and warm hospitality have left an indelible mark on us. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventures – a visit to the Gryllefjord Viewpoint, Sázzá Senja naturhus og museum, and the Husøy Lighthouse – I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. I am looking forward to tomorrow when we are planning to have breakfast at Mefjord Brygge and lunch at Storbrygga Spiseri and dinner at Senja matstudio. I'm also hoping to check out Hugos Pub/ Senja Uteliv AS tomorrow.

Senja continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. As I edit the photos from today, I'm already excited to share more of our experiences with you all. Stay tuned for more tales from this winter wonderland!

The trip has reminded me that I forgot my portable phone charger and an extra memory card for my camera, which is a shame, but I will manage!
