First Impressions of Marrakech

Touchdown in Marrakech! The air is thick with the scent of spices and the promise of adventure. My friends and I have finally arrived, ready to dive headfirst into the sensory explosion that is Marrakech. After a smooth flight from Frankfurt, a taxi whisked us away to Riad Andalla, our home for the next week. Nestled in the heart of the Medina, it's the perfect base for our explorations. The initial chaos of the city was a bit overwhelming, a stark contrast to the orderly streets of Heidelberg, but I could already feel the vibrant energy seeping into my soul.

Our riad, Riad Andalla, is beautiful. It is a tranquil haven. The architecture is amazing and it is close to so many places that we want to see. I'm looking forward to seeing the city, and getting to know the culture. I am glad to be doing this with my friends, and to have Greta and Marko's support back home.

I made sure to pack my lightweight clothing, as well as my travel guidebook. I remembered my camera so I can capture all the amazing moments that I am sure we will experience, but I forgot my adapter for the power outlets! I will need to pick one up tomorrow.

The Majestic Koutoubia Mosque

Our first stop was the Koutoubia Mosque, a towering symbol of Marrakech. Even though non-Muslims can't enter, the exterior is breathtaking. The intricate details of the minaret, which I learned was built in the 12th century, are stunning. Its design, a masterpiece of Almohad architecture, served as a model for the Giralda of Seville and the Hassan Tower of Rabat. Standing there, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history and artistry before me. The soft sandstone glowed in the afternoon sun, and the surrounding gardens offered a moment of peace amidst the city's bustle. The Koutoubia's minaret is visible from almost everywhere in the city, and the height of the towers looms over the city. It is an important symbol of Marrakech.

I learned that the name 'Koutoubia' comes from the Arabic word for booksellers, reflecting the area's past as a marketplace for manuscripts. The mosque has been a focal point for community gatherings for centuries, and its courtyard can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers. I also learned that the mosque was built by the Almohads after they took control of Marrakech in 1147. They wanted to show their religious authority by replacing the existing Almoravid monuments. The mosque's location on former palace grounds sent a powerful message - it symbolized both political power and spiritual renewal.

Lunch at Nomad Marrakech

For lunch, we ventured to Nomad Marrakech, a restaurant recommended by several blogs I'd read. Nestled in the Spice Market (Rahba Kedima Square), this modern eatery offered a welcome respite from the crowded streets. We managed to snag a table on the rooftop terrace, which provided panoramic views of the Medina. The menu was a delightful fusion of traditional Moroccan flavors with a contemporary twist. I opted for the lamb burger, while my friends tried the vegetarian plate and a deconstructed tagine. Each dish was a burst of fresh, local ingredients, expertly prepared. The mint lemonade was also a refreshing treat.

The food was lovely all round. The service was slightly slow but otherwise great atmosphere and variety of dishes. It was a great restaurant with tasty food and friendly staff, located in the heart of the Medina. I would definitely recommend Nomad to others visiting Marrakech.

Marrakech is more than just a destination; it's an experience that awakens the senses and stirs the soul.

Exploring the Enchanting Le Jardin Secret

After lunch, we sought refuge from the bustling souks at Le Jardin Secret, a hidden oasis in the heart of the Medina. This meticulously restored 19th-century palace complex is a haven of tranquility, divided into two distinct gardens: an Islamic garden and an exotic garden. The Islamic garden, with its traditional four-part division and intricate water features, offered a serene escape. The exotic garden, showcasing diverse plant species from around the world, was equally captivating. I climbed the tower for panoramic views of Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains in the distance. The sound of trickling water creates this amazingly calm atmosphere that makes you forget you're in the middle of a busy city.

I learned that the garden is a masterpiece of restoration and garden design in a unique and fascinating location and that during the garden's restoration, 19th century construction techniques were used as far as possible. There is also a small shop selling tasteful arts and crafts near the entrance. The guides at Le Jardin Secret speak both English and French very well and are eager to help visitors interpret all aspects of the garden.

Djemaa el-Fnaa: A Nightly Spectacle

As evening approached, we made our way to Jemaa el-Fnaa, the city's main square. During the day, it's a bustling marketplace, but at night, it transforms into an open-air theater. The square buzzes with life as vendors set up stalls selling everything from spices and textiles to traditional medicines. I was immediately swept up in the energy of the crowds, the hypnotic music of the Gnaoua musicians, and the tantalizing aromas of street food. Snake charmers, storytellers, and henna artists added to the spectacle. It was chaotic, yes, but also incredibly captivating.

I learned that Jemaa el-Fnaa has been the cultural and social epicenter of the city for centuries. Established in the 11th century by the Almoravid dynasty, this iconic plaza has witnessed the evolution of Moroccan history, becoming a melting pot of traditions, arts, and commerce. It was designated as a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001. This recognition was a testament to the square's role in preserving the traditional Moroccan practices of storytelling, music, and folk art.

Dinner at Dar Zellij

For dinner, we chose Dar Zellij, a fine dining establishment housed in a beautifully restored 17th-century palace. The ambiance was magical, with intricate mosaic decorations, an open courtyard, and live music. The service was impeccable, with friendly staff dressed in traditional white tunics. We started with an aperitif on the rooftop terrace, enjoying panoramic views of the Medina. For the main course, I savored the lamb couscous, while my friends opted for the beef shin tagine with prunes and almonds. The flavors were rich and authentic, a perfect culmination of our first day in Marrakech.

The ambiance is warm and inviting, with low lighting, plush cushions, and the soothing sounds of live music drifting through the air. The staff is friendly and attentive, always ready to offer recommendations or answer any questions you may have about the menu. I also learned that the restaurant offers a pickup and drop-off service from nearby Riads.

Nightcap at Le Salama Sky-bar

To end the night, we headed to Le Salama Sky-bar for a nightcap. This rooftop bar offered stunning views of the city, and the atmosphere was lively and exciting. We enjoyed some beers while watching a belly dancing performance. It was the perfect way to cap off a day filled with sensory overload and cultural immersion.

The atmosphere is vibrant yet intimate, making it an ideal spot for both couples seeking a romantic evening and friends looking to unwind. Looking Ahead

As I write this, back in the tranquility of Riad Andalla, I'm already buzzing with anticipation for tomorrow. We plan to visit the Bahia Palace, Madrasa Ben Youssef, and the House of Photography. I'm also looking forward to exploring the Souk Semmarine and haggling for some souvenirs. The day has been long, but it was a great introduction to the city and culture. I'm excited to see what tomorrow will bring!

I am also looking forward to telling Marko all about it, and seeing Greta when I get home. They are always in my thoughts when I travel, and I know they are eager to hear all about my adventures. I'm also glad that my friends are having a great time, and that we are all experiencing this together.

Good night from Marrakech!
