Whispers of History in Meknes

Today was a journey back in time, a day spent wandering through the historical wonders just outside of Moulay Idriss. With the Moroccan sun warming my face, I ventured into the ancient city of Meknes, ready to explore its hidden gems and soak in its rich cultural tapestry. It's amazing how each place tells a story, and I was eager to listen.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa. The panoramic views of Volubilis from the terrace were the perfect start to a day of exploration. Fuelling up with traditional Moroccan fare, I prepared myself for the adventures that lay ahead. The weather was quite pleasant, with a high of around 18°C, a bit breezy, and mostly sunny – ideal for walking around and soaking in the sights.

First on the agenda was the Bassin Souani, a massive water basin built in the 17th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail. As I approached the basin, its sheer size was immediately striking. It's hard to believe this was once a vital water source for the royal palace and the city. Today, it stands as a tranquil oasis, a place where history and nature intertwine.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of history.

I strolled along the water's edge, imagining the bustling activity that must have once taken place here. The gentle sounds of the water and the rustling leaves created a soothing atmosphere. It was easy to get lost in contemplation, reflecting on the ingenuity of the past and the enduring beauty of Moroccan heritage. I took some time to capture the picturesque setting, the light playing off the water and the surrounding greenery. Although renovations are ongoing, the site's charm remains undiminished.

Leaving the serene Bassin Souani, I made my way to the Khemis Gate. This gate, while perhaps not as grandiose as the famous Bab Mansour, possesses its own unique beauty and historical significance. Built in the 17th century, it's one of the many gates that encircle the medina of Meknes. The archway is adorned with intricate zellij in a striking shade of green, a welcome contrast to the surrounding beige tones.

As I walked through the gate, I couldn't help but feel a sense of stepping back in time. The vibrant atmosphere of the medina beckoned, with its bustling markets and narrow alleyways. According to what I read, the Khemis Gate historically led to the Jewish quarter. Today, a flea market thrives just outside its walls. I decided to explore the area, soaking in the sights and sounds of local life.

After a morning of historical exploration, my stomach started rumbling, signaling it was time for lunch. I headed to Grillade Albanna, a local spot known for its Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine. I indulged in a flavorful tagine, savoring the rich blend of spices and tender meat. It was the perfect way to refuel before continuing my adventures.

In the afternoon, I decided to immerse myself in the local craft scene. I visited The Anou Cooperative, a place I had read about before embarking on this trip. While The Anou Cooperative is located in Fez, I found another local shop in Meknes that partners with them. This cooperative is more than just a store; it's a cultural association that empowers local artisans, especially women.

Stepping inside, I was greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors and textures. Handwoven rugs, intricate textiles, and beautifully crafted goods filled the space. Each item told a story, reflecting the craftsmanship passed down through generations. I spent hours browsing the collection, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans.

I learned that The Anou Cooperative is committed to fair trade practices, ensuring that artisans receive fair compensation for their work. By purchasing their products, I was not only acquiring a unique souvenir but also supporting the livelihoods of these talented individuals. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven rug, a piece that will always remind me of my time in Morocco.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon for dinner. The cozy atmosphere and traditional Moroccan cuisine were the perfect way to end my day of exploration. I enjoyed a delicious meal, reflecting on all the incredible sights and experiences I had encountered.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and Lahdim Square. I'm also hoping to relax at DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN. I am looking forward to diving deeper into the history and culture of this fascinating region.

My thoughts drifted to Greta and Marko back in Heidelberg. I imagined Marko playing football with his friends, and Greta preparing dinner. I miss them dearly, but I know this solo adventure is something I need to do for myself. It's a chance to reconnect with my passions and gain a new perspective on life.

As I sipped my mint tea, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Morocco has a way of captivating your senses and stirring your soul. Each day brings new discoveries and unforgettable experiences. I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds.

Reflections on the Day

Looking back on the day, I am struck by the layers of history and culture that permeate every corner of Meknes. From the grandeur of Bassin Souani to the intricate details of Khemis Gate and the vibrant artistry of The Anou Cooperative, each experience offered a glimpse into Morocco's rich heritage. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with the stories and the people that make them unique.
