A Day of Discovery in Moulay Idriss
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of ancient history and modern Moroccan life, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Moulay Idriss region. It's amazing how much history is packed into this area, and I was eager to soak it all in.
My day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق. The name might be a mouthful, but the food was fantastic. I had some traditional msemen, a type of flaky pancake, with honey and a strong coffee. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. The cafe itself had a cozy atmosphere, filled with locals starting their day, which I always find comforting when I'm traveling solo. It’s a reminder that even in a new place, the rhythm of daily life continues.

Fueled and ready, I set off to explore the Haroune Aqueduct. The aqueduct is a short distance from Moulay Idriss. While many believe it to be of Roman origin, it was actually constructed in the early 20th century by Sultan Moulay Abdel Aziz to supply water to the city. It's an impressive structure, stretching across the valley, and it really gives you a sense of the engineering prowess of the past. I spent a good hour wandering around, taking photos and just imagining what it must have been like to rely on this aqueduct for daily life.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.
After the aqueduct, I headed to Heri es-Souani in Meknes. This site is often mistaken for the Royal Stables, but it actually served as a granary or silo for the Imperial Kasbah, built by Moulay Isma'il in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The sheer scale of the place is incredible. The thick walls and vaulted ceilings were designed to keep the grain cool, and you can still see the remnants of the water channels that were used for this purpose. It's easy to get lost in the maze of rooms and corridors, and I spent a long time exploring every nook and cranny. Greta would have loved this place; she always appreciates a good historical site, and I made a mental note to bring her here someday. Marko, on the other hand, would have probably been more interested in climbing the walls, but maybe he'll appreciate it more when he's older.

Lunch was at Volubilis, a restaurant conveniently located near the Heri es-Souani. I decided to try a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was tender, and the vegetables were perfectly cooked, all simmered in a flavorful sauce. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring. I even struck up a conversation with a couple from France who were also traveling in Morocco. We shared stories and tips, and it's always nice to connect with other travelers.

In the late afternoon, I made my way back to Moulay Idriss for dinner at La Baraka. This restaurant came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. I had the couscous, which was light and fluffy, and the service was excellent. The staff were friendly and attentive, and they made me feel right at home. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and it was the perfect place to unwind after a busy day. I savored every bite, enjoying the flavors and the ambiance.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out SCORPION HOUSE, a bar with a reputation for amazing views. It was a bit of a walk uphill, but the view was definitely worth it. From my vantage point, I could see the entire town spread out below me, with the lights twinkling in the distance. It was the perfect spot to reflect on the day and soak in the beauty of Moulay Idriss. I enjoyed a refreshing drink and chatted with some of the locals, who were all very welcoming and friendly.

As I sit here now, writing in my journal, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had today. Moulay Idriss is a truly special place, full of history, culture, and natural beauty. It's a place that stays with you long after you've left. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore the Bassin Souani صهريج السواني and Khemis Gate. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at The Anou Cooperative, where I can pick up some local crafts and souvenirs. I think Greta and Marko will both appreciate a little something from Morocco.
I'm really starting to feel at home here in Morocco. It's a country that has so much to offer, and I'm excited to see what else it has in store for me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to get some sleep. Tomorrow is another day of adventure!
In other news, I really must remember to buy sunscreen. I knew I forgot something from my packing list!
I've also heard that there might be some local events happening in the Moulay Idriss region in November 2025, but I haven't been able to find any specific details yet. I'll keep my eyes open and see if I can find anything interesting to check out.
Good night from Morocco!
