Solo Adventure in Moulay Idriss: A Cultural Journey
Day 10: Whispers of History in Meknes: A Day Among Saints and Squares
Exploring Meknes: From the sacred Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail to the vibrant Lahdim Square, a day of Moroccan history and culture.
A Day Steeped in History
Today, I ventured into the heart of Meknes, a city that hums with the echoes of sultans and storytellers. It was a day of contrasts, moving from the hushed reverence of ancient tombs to the vibrant chaos of a bustling square. The experiences were a vivid reminder of Morocco's layered past and its vibrant present, a journey that resonated deeply within me.
My day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at SCORPION HOUSE. The views from there are magical, overlooking the jewel-like Moulay Idriss. I fueled up with traditional Moroccan pancakes and mint tea, preparing myself for a day of exploration. It's funny, I still haven't quite mastered the art of pouring tea from a height without making a bit of a mess – Greta would definitely have a good laugh if she saw me now. I made sure I had my camera and journal, ready to capture the essence of Meknes. I really missed not having packed sunscreen, though, and made a mental note to pick some up tomorrow.

From there, I set off to the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, a site of immense historical and spiritual significance. As a non-Muslim, I knew I wouldn't be able to enter the tomb itself, but I was still eager to experience the atmosphere of reverence and admire the architecture. The mausoleum, a peaceful resting place of Sultan Moulay Ismail, is open to non-Muslims. The walls of the mausoleum feature unique decorations and inscriptions, reflecting Islamic character. Constructed during his lifetime, Ismail chose this location hoping to be judged in his own court by his own people.

The series of pale-yellow courtyards leading to the tomb offered a sense of serenity that contrasted sharply with Ismail's turbulent reign. Removing my shoes before stepping into the sanctuary, I was immediately struck by the exquisite zellij, the enamel-painted wood, and the elaborately carved plaster that adorned the walls. It's incredible how these intricate designs have stood the test of time, a testament to the skill and artistry of Moroccan craftsmen. I couldn't help but think of Marko, my son, and how his eyes would light up at the sight of the colourful mosaics.
The serenity of the mausoleum offered a stark contrast to the bustling city outside, a reminder that even in the midst of life's chaos, there is always room for peace and reflection.
Two antique clocks stood on either side of a Moorish doorway, gifts from Louis XIV, a king who famously refused Ismail's request to marry his daughter. It's fascinating how these small details can bring history to life, connecting the stories of different cultures and eras. I spent some time in quiet contemplation, admiring the craftsmanship and reflecting on the life of Moulay Ismail, a man who left an indelible mark on Moroccan history. The interior is home to Sultan Moulay Ismail's tomb, an intricately decorated space that captures the essence of Moroccan spiritual artistry.
Leaving the mausoleum, I made my way to Lahdim Square, the vibrant heart of Meknes. The square was bustling with activity, a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and smells. Storytellers captivated their audiences with animated tales, while vendors hawked their wares, offering everything from spices and traditional medicines to colourful textiles and handcrafted souvenirs. I watched as snake charmers coaxed cobras from their baskets, their hypnotic music drawing gasps and murmurs from the crowd. The scent of grilling meat filled the air, mingling with the sweet aroma of pastries and mint tea.

I decided to have lunch at Roman City, a restaurant recommended by a local I met earlier in the day. I opted for a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, and savored the rich, flavorful stew as I watched the world go by. It was a perfect spot for people-watching, observing the ebb and flow of daily life in Meknes. The square has been a center of activity for the medina of Meknes, serving as a junction between the old medina, the Royal Palace and the imperial city.

As I wandered through the square, I couldn't help but notice the Bab Mansour gate, a stunning example of Moroccan architecture. Its intricate details and imposing presence served as a reminder of Meknes's rich history and its status as one of Morocco's imperial cities. The gate is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. The square is a vibrant cultural hub, known for its lively atmosphere, delicious street food and the impressive Bab Mansour gate.
In the late afternoon, I sought refuge from the crowds at DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and panoramic views. Sipping on a refreshing drink, I watched as the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city. The call to prayer echoed from the nearby mosques, a melodic reminder of the city's spiritual heart. The bar is located in a historical building, featuring traditional Moroccan architecture.

For dinner, I chose Haytam, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. I indulged in a flavorful couscous dish, savoring the delicate balance of spices and textures. It was the perfect ending to a day of culinary exploration, a chance to reflect on the diverse flavors and aromas of Moroccan cuisine. I am looking forward to the tagine tomorrow at Restaurant Moulay Idriss.

As I write this, back in my guesthouse, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Meknes is a city that captivates the senses, a place where history comes alive in every stone and every smile. It's a city that I know I'll never forget, a place that has enriched my understanding of Morocco and its people. I am going to head out again tomorrow to DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN to get a better view of the mosque. After that I will head to Small Terasse to take in the view before heading to Restaurant Moulay Idriss for breakfast. It is a town I will never forget.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Moulay Idriss, including a visit to the Small Terasse for a view of the mosque and a shopping trip to زيارة باب مولاي إدريس. I'm eager to delve deeper into the town's history and culture, to discover more hidden gems and to connect with the local community. I am also hoping to find a travel guidebook as I forgot mine.
I think Greta and Marko would really love it here, especially the donkeys and the fresh baked bread. Maybe one day I will bring them both back to this magical place.
