Day 12: Farewell, Moulay Idriss: Reflecting on a Sacred Moroccan Journey
Reflecting on a solo journey through the heart of Morocco, exploring Meknes, Moulay Idriss, and savoring the final moments of this cultural immersion.
A Fond Farewell
As my Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past twelve days. Today was all about savoring the last moments, soaking in the atmosphere of Moulay Idriss, and venturing out to nearby Meknes for a final taste of Moroccan culture and history. It's amazing how quickly time flies when you're immersed in a new and exciting environment, and I'm already feeling a pang of sadness as I prepare to head back to Heidelberg.

My day began with a leisurely breakfast at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa. The spread was fantastic, a typical Moroccan house located in the holy city of Moulay Idriss. From the terrace, I enjoyed panoramic views of Volubilis and the surrounding areas. It was the perfect way to start the day, fueling up for my last explorations. I savored every bite, knowing I'd soon be back to my usual German Frühstück. The air was crisp, the sun was shining, and the call to prayer echoed through the valley – a truly magical Moroccan moment. I made sure to thank the staff for their incredible hospitality; they were so kind during my stay.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I decided to spend the morning in Meknes. The city is only a short taxi ride from Moulay Idriss, making it an easy day trip. Meknes is one of Morocco's four imperial cities and has a rich history and stunning architecture. I was particularly excited to see Bab Mansour, the grand gate that is considered one of the most beautiful in Morocco. I wandered through the medina, soaking in the atmosphere and haggling for a few last-minute souvenirs. I found a beautiful ceramic tagine that I know Greta will love, and a small hand-carved wooden toy for Marko. I also picked up some spices to try and recreate some of the delicious Moroccan dishes I've enjoyed here. The medina was bustling with activity, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists all going about their day. The colors, sounds, and smells were intoxicating, a true feast for the senses.

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
For lunch, I decided to try Grillade Albanna. I opted for some grilled meat, and it was fantastic. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the skill of the chef and the quality of the ingredients. It was a simple meal, but incredibly satisfying, and I left feeling energized and ready to continue my explorations. After lunch, I took a stroll through the Jewish Quarter, known as the Mellah. It was a fascinating glimpse into another aspect of Moroccan history and culture. The architecture was distinct, with narrow streets and houses with wooden balconies. I learned about the history of the Jewish community in Meknes, which dates back centuries. It was a sobering reminder of the complexities of Moroccan society, but also a testament to the country's diversity and tolerance.

Back in Moulay Idriss, I spent the afternoon revisiting some of my favorite spots in the town. I wandered through the narrow streets, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the atmosphere of this holy city. I stopped by the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the city and a significant figure in Moroccan history. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter, I could still feel the spiritual significance of the place from the outside. I sat for a while in a small café, sipping mint tea and watching the world go by. It was a peaceful and contemplative moment, a chance to reflect on my journey and appreciate the beauty of my surroundings. The locals were friendly and welcoming, always ready with a smile and a greeting.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Scorpion House, a bar and restaurant with stunning views overlooking Moulay Idriss and the surrounding countryside. I had heard great things about the place, and I was not disappointed. The climb up the narrow medina streets was a bit of a workout, but the views were more than worth the effort. I enjoyed a refreshing drink and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying the stunning scenery. It was the perfect way to end my day, savoring the last moments of my Moroccan adventure. The owner, Mike Richardson, has created a beautiful, comfortable house and the views are incomparable.

For my final dinner in Morocco, I chose Volubilis restaurant in Moulay Idriss. It was a fitting choice, given the restaurant's name and its connection to the nearby Roman ruins. I enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Moroccan cuisine, savoring the flavors and spices that have become so familiar to me over the past twelve days. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude as I finished my meal, knowing that I had made the most of my time in Morocco.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I decided to take one last stroll through the streets of Moulay Idriss. The town was quiet and peaceful, the only sounds the gentle murmur of conversations and the distant call to prayer. I paused for a moment to take it all in, etching the memory of this magical place into my mind. I knew that I would never forget my time in Moulay Idriss, and that I would carry the spirit of Morocco with me wherever I go.
Tomorrow, I will be heading to the airport in Fez to catch my flight back to Germany. It's always a bittersweet moment, leaving a place that has captured my heart. But I know that I will be back to Morocco someday, to explore more of its hidden corners and experience more of its rich culture. And until then, I will have the memories of this incredible journey to keep me warm. I'm already looking forward to sharing my stories and photos with Greta and Marko, and to planning our next family adventure. Perhaps we'll come back to Morocco together, and I can show them all the amazing places I've discovered. Until then, au revoir, Morocco. You have been a wonderful host, and I will never forget you.
I am glad I took the time to explore Meknes, Dar Moulay Idriss, Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, Grillade Albanna, Volubilis, and SCORPION HOUSE. It was a packed day of memories for my last day.
