Day 1: Arctic Awakening: Tromsø's Charms Unveiled
Discover Tromsø's rich culture and stunning beauty with my spouse. From historic sites to local cuisine, an Arctic adventure begins!
First Day in the Arctic Circle!
After a long journey from Kelowna, with layovers in Vancouver and Oslo, Olivia and I finally arrived in Tromsø! The air is crisp, carrying a hint of snow, and the excitement is palpable. This trip has been a long time coming, and stepping onto Arctic soil felt like the beginning of a grand adventure. I'm eager to share every moment of our exploration of this unique city, from its historical landmarks to its vibrant culinary scene.
Our first stop after settling into Enter City Apartment Hotel was the iconic Tromsø Cathedral.

As someone who appreciates history and architecture, I was immediately captivated by its wooden structure and Gothic Revival style. Built in 1861, this northernmost Protestant cathedral is a sight to behold. We learned about its rich history, including the churches that stood on the same site since the 13th century. The interior was just as impressive, with beautiful woodwork and stained-glass windows creating a serene atmosphere. It's remarkable to think that this building has been a center of faith and community for so many years.

Next on our list was the Northern Norwegian Art Museum.
Experience the cultural richness and artistic innovation of Northern Norway at the Northern Norwegian Art Museum in Tromsø.
As a software developer, I don't often immerse myself in the art world, but I was genuinely intrigued by the museum's focus on Northern Norwegian and Sami art. Olivia, with her keen eye for detail, appreciated the diverse exhibitions, including The Monster as Stand-In and Mother, Sun & Ocean, VII and V years. The museum offered a unique perspective on the region's culture and history, showcasing the talents of local artists and their connection to the Arctic landscape. I found myself particularly drawn to the exhibits that explored the relationship between art and the environment, a theme that resonates deeply with my interest in wildlife conservation.
By lunchtime, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Risø mat og kaffebar for a taste of local cuisine.
Discover fresh flavors at Risø Mat og Kaffebar in Tromsø - your go-to spot for delicious breakfasts and exceptional coffee experiences.
This charming café is known for its excellent coffee and delicious lunch dishes made with local ingredients. Olivia and I shared a couple of open-faced sandwiches topped with fresh seafood and locally sourced vegetables. The coffee was rich and flavorful, providing the perfect pick-me-up after a morning of sightseeing. It was a cozy spot, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the simple pleasures of good food and good company. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes when we get back home to Kelowna – a little taste of Tromsø in Canada.
For our main meal of the day, we chose Emmas Dream Kitchen, a place recommended for its Scandinavian cuisine.

The restaurant lived up to its reputation, serving up innovative dishes with a focus on local ingredients. I opted for the braised reindeer leg, a local delicacy, while Olivia enjoyed the fresh fish. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, with the staff providing detailed descriptions of each course and its ingredients. It was an unforgettable dining experience that truly captured the essence of Northern Norway.
As evening approached, we had dinner at Arctandria SjømatRestaurant, located in Vertshuset Skarven.

This seafood restaurant is renowned for its authentic Norwegian dishes and cozy atmosphere. We started with a selection of seafood appetizers, including smoked salmon and pickled herring, before moving on to the main courses. I chose the grilled stockfish, a traditional Norwegian dish, while Olivia savored the pan-fried redfish. The flavors were bold and satisfying, showcasing the freshness of the local seafood. The restaurant itself was charming, with fishing nets and dried cod heads adorning the walls. It felt like stepping back in time, experiencing the culinary traditions of Northern Norway.
Before heading back to our apartment, we made a stop at Tromsø Gift & Souvenir Shop AS to pick up a few mementos of our first day in Tromsø.

This shop is known for its wide selection of creative gifts, including handcrafted fridge magnets, stuffed animals of Arctic animals, and Sami-inspired items. Olivia found a beautiful Sami bracelet made of reindeer leather, while I chose a handcrafted wooden troll to add to my collection. The shop was bustling with tourists, all eager to take home a piece of Tromsø's culture and heritage.
Today was a whirlwind of sightseeing, cultural immersion, and culinary delights. Tromsø has already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. We are looking forward to visiting the Polaria aquarium and the Polar Museum. I am also excited to experience the Magic Ice Bar, a unique venue made entirely of ice. As I reflect on our first day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible part of the world with my wonderful wife, Olivia.
Even though I missed a Polar Night Concert at the Tromsø Cathedral, which is a tradition for many at this time of year, I am still happy to have visited the cathedral itself. I am also aware that several music and film festivals are happening in Tromsø in November, and I am hoping to attend one of those.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore more of Tromsø's unique attractions, including the Polaria aquarium and the Polar Museum. I'm also intrigued by the Magic Ice Bar, which promises a chillingly good time. Until then, I'll leave you with one final thought: Tromsø is a city that captivates the senses and nourishes the soul. It's a place where history, culture, and natural beauty converge to create an unforgettable experience. I am glad to be sharing this experience with Olivia, whose presence enriches every moment of this Arctic adventure. I am also glad that I didn't forget my travel journal, so I can document every detail of this trip.
