Day 2: Lillaz's Cascade and Cultural Treasures

Today was a day of embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Gran Paradiso, intertwined with the rich cultural heritage of this remarkable region. Olivia and I set out with a sense of anticipation, eager to explore the natural wonders and artistic expressions that awaited us. From the cascading waters of Cascate di Lillaz to the insightful exhibits at the Fondation Grand Paradis, today was a sensory feast that left us in awe of the alpine charm.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Sant'Orso. Fuelled up with local delicacies, we set off towards Cascate di Lillaz, a series of waterfalls that I had been particularly excited about. The walk to the falls was an experience in itself, a gentle ascent through lush greenery with the sound of rushing water growing ever louder. As we rounded a bend, the Cascate di Lillaz revealed themselves in all their glory.

The falls are made up of three main tiers, with the water cascading down a total height of around 150 meters. The power and beauty of the water were mesmerizing as it crashed against the rocks, creating a cool mist that kissed our faces. I couldn't resist pulling out my camera, snapping photos from every conceivable angle. Olivia, ever the nature enthusiast, simply stood in awe, soaking in the scene. I remember back in Kimberley, South Africa, there weren't sights quite like this. It's a different kind of beauty, one that speaks of a cooler, alpine serenity.

We spent a good hour exploring the different viewpoints, each offering a unique perspective on the cascading water. The trail was well-maintained, making it accessible for all fitness levels, and we even saw families with young children enjoying the spectacle. The August air was crisp and refreshing, a welcome change from the warmer temperatures we had left behind in Kelowna. Finding moments of serenity like this is something Olivia and I cherish, a chance to disconnect from our busy lives and reconnect with each other and the natural world.

Nature's artistry, in the form of cascading water and delicate lace, paints a vivid picture of Gran Paradiso's soul.

After our fill of nature's spectacle, we drove to the Fondation Grand Paradis, an organization dedicated to promoting the natural and cultural heritage of the Gran Paradiso National Park. The foundation manages various sites and projects within the park, including visitor centers and the Alpine Botanical Garden Paradisia. I was keen to learn more about the park's biodiversity and the conservation efforts in place.

The Fondation's main center in Cogne offered a range of exhibits, detailing the park's history, geology, flora, and fauna. Olivia was particularly fascinated by the exhibit on the park's iconic ibex population, while I was drawn to the displays on the region's unique geology. It's incredible how much this park does to educate and engage visitors.

We learned about the park's origins as a royal hunting reserve and its transformation into Italy's first national park in 1922. The exhibits also highlighted the challenges of balancing conservation with the needs of local communities. It's a delicate balancing act, but one that the Fondation seems committed to navigating with care.

Following our enriching visit to the Fondation, we decided to immerse ourselves further in the local culture with a visit to Les Dentellières de Cogne. This cooperative of lacemakers carries on the centuries-old tradition of Cogne lace, a delicate and intricate art form that has been passed down through generations.

As we stepped into the workshop, we were greeted by the sight of women meticulously working at their looms, their fingers flying across the bobbins with incredible speed and precision. The air was filled with the gentle clacking of the bobbins, a soothing and rhythmic sound that spoke of dedication and artistry. Olivia, who has always had an appreciation for handmade crafts, was immediately captivated.

We learned that the tradition of Cogne lace dates back to the 17th century when Benedictine nuns fleeing a monastery in Cluny taught the local women the art of lacemaking. Since then, the craft has become an integral part of Cogne's cultural identity, with the lacemakers preserving and passing on their skills to younger generations. It reminded me of the beadwork traditions back home, where skills are passed down with pride and care.

I bought a small piece of lace as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of the intricate beauty and craftsmanship that we had witnessed. Olivia purchased a beautiful lace scarf, a timeless piece that she knew she would treasure for years to come. Supporting local artisans like these women is something we both believe in, a way of contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage.

For lunch, we stopped at Bar Ristorante Valnontey - Valnontey (ao), a charming spot known for its traditional Valdostan cuisine. We shared a hearty polenta dish, a local specialty made with creamy cornmeal and topped with melted cheese and mushrooms. It was the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventures, a comforting and flavorful taste of the region. The restaurant offered stunning views of the Gran Paradiso range, making our lunch even more memorable.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at La Barme for dinner. The cozy ambiance and the aroma of local herbs created a welcoming atmosphere. We savored every bite of our meal, reflecting on the day's adventures. The restaurant is nestled in the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park, offering picturesque views.

Today was more than just ticking off sights on a list. It was about connecting with nature, appreciating local culture, and creating lasting memories with my favorite travel companion. As we settle into our guesthouse for the night, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Gran Paradiso. This trip is turning out to be everything we had hoped for and more.
