Last Day's Embrace

As our Brazilian adventure neared its end, a bittersweet feeling washed over me. This trip to Chapada dos Guimarães with my friends had been nothing short of spectacular, filled with unforgettable landscapes and experiences that resonated deeply with my soul. Today, we set out to explore the last gems of this natural paradise, determined to soak in every moment before our journey back home.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Penhasco. The spread was fantastic, and I enjoyed the buffet, which included a variety of options, from fresh fruits to savory pastries. It was the perfect fuel for our final day of exploration. The restaurant itself offered stunning views of the landscape, making our breakfast even more enjoyable. As I sipped my coffee, I reminisced about the past few days, feeling grateful for the chance to experience such beauty with my friends. I remembered how Thando, my son, would have loved running around here and exploring. I made a mental note to bring Olivia and him here one day.

Journey into the Aroe Jari Cave

Our first stop was the Caverna Aroe Jari. This cave, whose name means soul shelter in the Bororo language, is the largest sandstone cave in Brazil. We met our guide, who told us about the cave’s history and geology. The hike to the cave was about 2.5 kilometers, and the guide was right; it was strenuous. I was glad I had worn my hiking boots. The landscape was beautiful, with low cerrado vegetation and water springs. As we walked, I couldn’t help but think about the importance of preserving such unique ecosystems. I made sure to apply sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

Once we reached the cave entrance, I was immediately struck by its grandeur. The entrance itself is a huge portal. Inside, the cave was cool and damp, a welcome change from the heat outside. Our guide pointed out various rock formations and explained how the cave was formed over thousands of years. We also saw some cave paintings, which were fascinating. I tried to imagine what life was like for the people who had created them. The cave is 1550 meters long and has several waterfalls. The first of these is right behind the entrance, in a place called the shower room.

The beauty of nature lies in its ability to inspire awe and wonder, reminding us of the delicate balance that sustains life.

One of the highlights was the Gruta da Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon Chamber), which features a lake with crystal blue water. We weren’t allowed to enter the water, as that would destroy the color effect, but it was still a sight to behold. The way the sunlight filtered through the entrance, creating a mesmerizing blue hue, was simply magical. We also explored the Caverna Kiogo Brado, an underground gorge with openings to the surface that let in light.

Turtle Waterfall

Next on our itinerary was Cachoeira da Tartaruga, or Turtle Waterfall. This was a spot I had been particularly excited about, and it didn't disappoint. The waterfall is accessible via a moderate hike through the park's lush vegetation. The hike was filled with beautiful scenery, and the anticipation of seeing the waterfall kept us motivated. As we got closer, we could hear the sound of the water cascading down, creating a soothing melody that seemed to beckon us forward.

When we finally arrived, I was mesmerized. The waterfall was stunning, with crystal-clear water flowing over the rocks. The area surrounding the waterfall was equally beautiful, with lush greenery and vibrant flowers adding to the picturesque scene. We spent a good amount of time here, taking photos and simply enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. Some of us even took a dip in the cool waters, which was incredibly refreshing after the hike. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a serene and untouched natural wonder.

A Final Culinary Embrace

For lunch, we headed to Garoa Restaurante. The ambiance was relaxed and inviting, and the menu offered a variety of options. I decided to try one of the local specialties, a grilled fish dish that was bursting with flavor. The meal was delicious, and it was the perfect way to refuel after our morning adventures. The others enjoyed their meals as well, and we all agreed that Garoa Restaurante was a great choice. As we ate, we shared stories and laughed, savoring the last few hours of our trip.

As evening approached, we decided to have our final dinner at Bistrô da Mata. This bistro is known for its charming atmosphere and delicious Brazilian cuisine. The rustic decor and stunning views of the surrounding landscapes made it the perfect setting for a memorable meal. I opted for a traditional meat dish, which was cooked to perfection and full of flavor. We paired our meals with a selection of fine wines, enhancing the dining experience. The service was impeccable, and the staff went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful evening.

After dinner, we made our way to Bodega da Chapada for a final taste of Chapada's nightlife. This unique bar and gourmet grocery store is a local favorite, known for its extensive selection of local drinks and high-quality products. We sampled some of the craft beers and artisanal cocktails, enjoying the lively atmosphere and the company of fellow travelers. The Bodega was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on our incredible journey.
