Day 8: Kanchanaburi's Charms: Skywalk Views and Ancient Echoes
Discover Kanchanaburi's modern marvels at Skywalk City and delve into prehistoric Thailand at the Ban Kao National Museum.
A Day of Heights and History in Kanchanaburi
Today was a fascinating blend of modern attractions and ancient history here in Kanchanaburi. It's amazing how much this region has to offer, from stunning viewpoints to glimpses into Thailand's prehistoric past. Olivia, Thando and I were all excited to explore what Day 8 had in store for us, and it certainly didn't disappoint!
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Zab Zab แซบ แซบ. The name says it all – it truly was 'แซบ' (delicious)! I went with a classic Pad Thai, while Olivia tried the Tom Yum soup. Thando, of course, opted for the fried chicken. The service was incredibly quick, and the staff were so friendly. It's a popular spot with both locals and tourists, and it's easy to see why. The prices are very reasonable, and the food is authentic and flavorful. I appreciated how they managed to balance the spices, making it enjoyable for everyone, even those of us who aren't used to super-spicy Thai food. After breakfast, fully energized, we were ready to start our day of exploring.

First up was the Skywalk Kanchanaburi City. I had seen photos online, but nothing quite prepares you for the real thing. Walking on that glass floor, suspended high above the ground, was a unique experience. Thando was a little nervous at first, but he soon got into the spirit of it, pointing out the boats on the river below. The panoramic views of the city, the mountains, and the meeting of the Kwae Yai and Kwae Noi rivers were simply breathtaking. The skywalk is well-maintained, and I felt perfectly safe despite the height. It cost us just 60 THB each to enter, which I thought was a bargain for such a memorable experience. We took advantage of the free lockers provided to store our belongings before stepping onto the glass.

Sometimes, the best views come after the hardest climbs – or in this case, a walk across a glass bridge!
After the Skywalk, we decided to delve into Kanchanaburi's ancient past with a visit to the Ban Kao National Museum. This museum is a bit of a hidden gem, located about 30 minutes outside the main town. The drive itself was lovely, taking us through some beautiful countryside. The museum focuses on the prehistoric archaeology of the region, and it was fascinating to see the artifacts that have been discovered here.

The museum building itself is modern and well-designed, with clean lines and a peaceful atmosphere. Thando was particularly interested in the skeletons and ancient tools on display. Olivia and I were impressed by the way the museum presented the information, making it accessible and engaging. We learned about the Ban Kao people who lived in this area thousands of years ago, and how their way of life has been pieced together from archaeological evidence. The museum is also praised for its cleanliness and friendly staff. It's air-conditioned, making it a comfortable place to spend a few hours. The entrance fee was also very reasonable, making it an accessible attraction for families.
For lunch, we stopped at @Chanchala (ร้านอาหาร แอลทชานชาลา), a charming restaurant known for its beautiful setting with mini waterfalls and lush greenery. It was a very nice dining place with great feelings on the in-restaurant waterfalls and the green. The restaurant had a tropical moss garden style, creating a refreshing and private atmosphere. We enjoyed delicious Thai dishes amidst the natural surroundings.

After a fulfilling day of sightseeing, we decided to do some shopping at Kwan & ooy shop. It’s a great cosmetics store with authentic Thai beauty products and exceptional service. Olivia was particularly excited to explore the local beauty products, and Thando enjoyed browsing the various items in the shop. It was a pleasant way to wind down after a day of exploring Kanchanaburi's attractions.

Finally, as the sun began to set, we headed to Keeree Tara for dinner. This riverside restaurant is known for its stunning views of the Bridge over the River Kwai. The atmosphere was magical, with live folk music and a cool breeze coming off the water. We savored delicious Thai dishes, including the Keeree Tara Chili Paste and Green Curry with Egg Wrap. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and discovery.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Tiger Temple and Wat Tham Phu Wa. I'm a little apprehensive about the Tiger Temple, as I've heard mixed reviews, but I'm also curious to see it for myself. We'll also be stopping by Ting Tong Bar for a drink in the evening. It should be another interesting day!
Today has been another fantastic day, filled with unforgettable experiences. Kanchanaburi continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I'm so grateful to be sharing this adventure with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
