Day 9: Temples, Tastes, and Ting Tong Tunes

Today was a beautiful blend of spiritual reflection and vibrant local experiences. Kanchanaburi continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I'm excited to share the highlights of our day, from serene temples to the lively riverside ambiance.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fried Oysters Street Food. Olivia and Thando were particularly excited about this, as they had heard so much about it from other travelers. This street food stall is renowned for its crispy fried oyster omelets, a local delicacy. The omelet, filled with mussels and oysters and topped with bean sprouts, was served with a sweet and sour sauce, adding a flavorful punch. It was a delightful start to the day, and we savored every bite, feeling energized for our temple visits.

First on our itinerary was the Tiger Temple. However, upon doing some research, I discovered some concerning information. The Tiger Temple, also known as Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua Yanasampanno, has faced accusations of mistreating tigers for commercial gain. Originally founded as a forest temple and sanctuary for wild animals, it later became a commercial temple, charging admission fees. Reports of animal mistreatment and illegal breeding led to the confiscation of the tigers and the closure of the facility. Given these issues, we decided to skip the Tiger Temple to ensure we weren't supporting unethical practices. It's important to me that our travels align with our values of respect for animals and ethical tourism.

Instead, we visited Wat Tham Phu Wa, a serene meditation retreat. The temple is nestled amidst lush natural surroundings, creating a peaceful atmosphere perfect for mindfulness and mental training. The temple grounds feature several Buddha images and worship areas, where visitors can pay their respects. The cave itself provided a cool and tranquil environment, ideal for relaxation and inner peace. We spent a few hours here, soaking in the calming atmosphere and reflecting on our journey so far. Thando was fascinated by the intricate architecture, influenced by Khmer arts, and the serene environment. Olivia found the meditation spaces particularly rejuvenating, commenting on the sense of calm that enveloped her.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest of places.

For lunch, we headed to Bite 'n chew, a restaurant recommended for its international cuisine. The menu featured a variety of options, including tasty ribeye, pizza, and hamburgers. The restaurant had a quiet atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing midday meal. I opted for the ribeye, while Olivia enjoyed a classic pizza, and Thando devoured a juicy hamburger. The friendly service and affordable prices made it a great spot for a family lunch.

As evening approached, we decided to explore Kanchanaburi's nightlife. We made our way to Ting Tong Bar, a riverside retreat known for its stunning views and laid-back ambiance. Nestled along the banks of the Khwae River, the bar offered a delightful spot to relax and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. We enjoyed refreshing drinks while watching the sunset over the water, a truly magical experience. The bar often hosts live music events, adding to the lively atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.

I had a chance to chat with some fellow travelers at the bar, exchanging stories and travel tips. One traveler mentioned the River Kwai Bridge Week and Red Cross Fair, which takes place from November 27 to December 7. This annual event commemorates the construction of the Thai-Burma Railway during World War II and features light and sound shows, cultural performances, and local food stalls. Although we missed the festival, it sounded like a moving tribute to the past.

For dinner, we chose Schluck Restaurant Kanchanaburi, drawn in by its unique blend of German and Italian cuisine. The restaurant's interior was designed to resemble a cozy alpine lodge, creating a warm and inviting environment. The menu featured a diverse selection of dishes, including T-bone steak, pizzas, and local Thai options. I decided on the T-bone steak, while Olivia tried one of their signature pizzas, and Thando enjoyed a pasta dish. The portions were generous, and the food was delicious, making it an excellent value for money.

As we wrapped up our evening, we reflected on the day's adventures. From the serene temples to the bustling nightlife, Kanchanaburi had offered us a rich tapestry of experiences. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our Kanchanaburi adventure. We plan to visit the Kanchanaburi Ancient Ruins and Wat Tham Khao Noi, soaking in the last bits of history and culture before heading back home. We'll also be having breakfast at Suan Bua, lunch at Dedthodsaphak Restaurant, and a farewell dinner at Thaiseree Restaurant. Before we leave, we'll stop by a local herbal shop to pick up some souvenirs.

Kanchanaburi has truly captured our hearts with its blend of history, nature, and culture. It's a destination that offers something for everyone, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic Thai experience. I am so glad we chose to come here with the family. It has been an incredible experience. I almost forgot to pack insect repellent, but luckily I remembered it before we left the hotel. I am glad I remembered, because the mosquitos have been out in full force.

Until tomorrow,
James
