Kyoto's Charms Continue to Unfold

Another day in Kyoto, and another chance to dive headfirst into the city's captivating blend of ancient traditions and modern delights. Today was a day of contrasts, from the colorful world of manga to the tranquil beauty of ancient temples, all rounded off with some exquisite dining. It's amazing how much this city has to offer, and I'm trying to soak up every last drop.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Arancino Kyoto. I decided to treat myself to their Carpaccio Di Capesante, the Hokkaido scallop sashimi was incredibly fresh, and the light champagne dressing was the perfect way to start the day. Fuelled up, I was ready to embrace the day's adventures.

My first stop was the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Now, I'll admit, I'm not the biggest manga aficionado, but I appreciate art and culture in all its forms. The museum is housed in a renovated school building, which adds a certain charm to the place. Inside, I was amazed by the sheer volume of manga on display. Shelves upon shelves lined with colorful volumes, a true testament to the art form's popularity and influence. I even saw a few folks completely lost in reading, which was quite amusing.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.

What struck me most was the history of manga. The museum did a fantastic job of showcasing its evolution over the years, with exhibits in English that were easy to follow. I learned about the different styles, the influential artists, and the impact manga has had on Japanese culture and beyond. They even had a section dedicated to translated manga from around the world! It was fascinating to see how this unique art form has transcended borders and captured the imaginations of people from all walks of life. I can see why Olivia would love it here, she always appreciates a good graphic novel.

Leaving the Manga Museum, I headed towards the Higashiyama district, eager to immerse myself in Kyoto's temple scene. My destination was Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion. As I strolled through the Philosopher's Path, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me. The path follows a canal lined with cherry trees, and even though it's still early in the season, I could see the buds swelling with anticipation. I can only imagine how beautiful it must be when the blossoms are in full bloom. Maybe Olivia and I will have to come back sometime during cherry blossom season.

Ginkaku-ji itself was a sight to behold. Originally built as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa in the 15th century, it was later converted into a Zen temple. Unlike its golden counterpart, Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji was never actually covered in silver. Some say this was due to a lack of funds, while others believe it was a deliberate choice, embracing the wabi-sabi aesthetic of finding beauty in imperfection. Whatever the reason, the pavilion exuded a sense of understated elegance, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

The gardens at Ginkaku-ji were equally impressive. The meticulously raked sand garden, known as the Sea of Silver Sand, was particularly striking, designed to reflect the moonlight. I spent some time wandering through the moss-covered pathways, admiring the carefully placed rocks and trees. It was a truly tranquil experience, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

From Ginkaku-ji, I made my way to Kiyomizu-Dera, another iconic Kyoto temple. The approach to the temple was an experience in itself, a steep uphill climb lined with shops selling everything from souvenirs to local delicacies. I resisted the urge to splurge on everything I saw, reminding myself that I still had a few more days to explore. I did pick up a few trinkets for Ethan, though, I'm sure he'll appreciate them.

Kiyomizu-Dera is famous for its wooden stage that juts out over the hillside, offering panoramic views of Kyoto. The stage was originally built without any nails, a testament to the ingenuity of traditional Japanese carpentry. As I stood on the stage, taking in the breathtaking scenery, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. It's moments like these that make travel so rewarding.

Beneath the main hall of Kiyomizu-Dera lies the Otowa Waterfall, where three streams of water cascade down into a pond. Visitors can drink from the streams, each of which is said to have different benefits: longevity, success in studies, and a fortunate love life. Apparently, you're only supposed to drink from one stream, as drinking from all three is considered greedy. I opted for the stream of longevity, hoping to enjoy many more years of travel and adventure. I could use some extra luck in my career too, maybe I should have picked that one!

After a day of cultural immersion, it was time to treat myself to a well-deserved dinner. I had made a reservation at French Dining Top of Kyoto, a revolving restaurant located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel. I've never dined in a revolving restaurant before, so I was curious to see what it was like.

The views from the restaurant were simply stunning. As the restaurant slowly rotated, I was treated to a 360-degree panorama of Kyoto, with its twinkling city lights and the dark silhouettes of the surrounding mountains. The food was equally impressive, a fusion of French and Japanese flavors that was both innovative and delicious. I enjoyed a Wagyu steak with a glass of champagne. The service was impeccable, and the staff were knowledgeable and attentive.

To end the day, I decided to check out Bar K6, known for its master bartenders and exquisite cocktails. I enjoyed a Kyoto Dry Gin Gin and Tonic. The atmosphere was sophisticated and welcoming, the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring.

As I walked back to Hotel Gion Misen, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the colorful world of manga to the serene beauty of ancient temples, Kyoto had once again captivated me with its unique charm. And to think, tomorrow is my last day here! I plan to make the most of it by visiting Byodoin Temple, Uji Shrine and Uji Bridge. I might even do some shopping at Kyoto LOFT. It's going to be a busy day, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” It's a sentiment I feel very strongly right now.

Until tomorrow,
