Uji: A Final Day of Discovery
My last day in Kyoto, and indeed Japan, was always going to be bittersweet. I decided to make the most of it by venturing slightly outside the city to Uji, a place renowned for its temples, shrines, and, of course, its exquisite matcha. It felt like a fitting way to bid farewell to this incredible country, immersing myself in its serene beauty and time-honored traditions.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Fujiya. I wanted to start the day with a traditional Japanese meal, and Fujiya didn't disappoint. I opted for a simple yet satisfying set featuring grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was the ideal fuel for a day of exploration.

My first stop was Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a true architectural marvel. The Phoenix Hall, with its elegant wings and shimmering reflection on the pond, was even more breathtaking in person than in photos. I took my time wandering through the temple grounds, admiring the intricate details and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. I even spotted a few early cherry blossoms, a gentle reminder of the fleeting beauty of nature.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where history and nature intertwine.
From Byodoin, I made my way to Uji Shrine, believed to be one of the oldest standing shrines in Japan. The shrine's main hall, built in the nagare-zukuri style, was a testament to the enduring craftsmanship of Japanese architecture. A short walk led me to Ujigami Shrine, another serene spot with a palpable sense of history. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of cedar and the distant sound of chanting. I paused for a moment, closed my eyes, and simply listened, feeling a deep connection to the past.

Next on the itinerary was the iconic Uji Bridge, which has spanned the Uji River for centuries. As I walked across, I couldn't help but think of its significance in Japanese literature and art, particularly its role in *The Tale of Genji*. The river flowed gently beneath, reflecting the clear blue sky and the surrounding greenery. It was a scene of perfect tranquility, a moment I knew I would cherish long after leaving Japan.

Lunch was at Yasakadori Enraku, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Kyoto cuisine. I decided to try their Oden, a hot pot dish with a light, flavorful broth. It was the perfect comfort food on a slightly chilly day, and the restaurant's elegant atmosphere added to the overall experience. I savored each bite, knowing it would be one of my last authentic Japanese meals for a while.

In the afternoon, I indulged in a bit of shopping at Kyoto LOFT, a department store known for its unique and contemporary Japanese lifestyle products. I picked up a few souvenirs for Olivia and Ethan, hoping to bring a small piece of Japan back home to Kelowna. LOFT was a treasure trove of interesting finds, from quirky stationery to innovative home goods. I could have easily spent hours browsing, but I had one more stop on my list.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Kikunoi Roan, a Michelin-starred restaurant renowned for its refined Japanese cuisine. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a testament to the chef's skill and dedication. The ambiance was elegant and intimate, making it a truly memorable dining experience. It was a fitting end to my culinary journey in Kyoto, a final indulgence before heading back to Canada.

As I sit here now, reflecting on my ten days in Kyoto, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and awe. This solo journey has been a transformative experience, allowing me to connect with a culture so different from my own, to discover hidden gems, and to appreciate the simple beauty of everyday life. I'll admit, I missed Olivia and Ethan terribly, and I'm already looking forward to sharing my stories and photos with them. Perhaps one day, we can all return to Japan together.
I'm also grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences with you, my readers. Your comments and encouragement have made this journey even more special. I hope my blog has inspired you to explore the world, to embrace new cultures, and to create your own unforgettable memories. Until next time, safe travels!
And with that, my Kyoto adventure comes to an end. Tomorrow, I'll be heading to the airport, ready to start the long journey back to Kelowna. It's time to trade temples for breweries, and cherry blossoms for Okanagan sunshine. But I know that a part of me will always remain in Kyoto, a city that has captured my heart and soul.
Before I completely sign off, I must admit I forgot to pack sunscreen and an umbrella! Rookie error, I know, and I definitely felt the sun's strength on a couple of afternoons and got caught in a brief shower. Note to self (and to you, dear readers): always double-check your packing list!
Until my next adventure… Sayōnara, and kampai!
