Day 6: A Day of Emperors, Gardens, and Culinary Delights in Kyoto
Explore Kyoto's Imperial Palace, serene gardens, and bustling Nishiki Market. A day of history, nature, and delicious discoveries awaits!
Kyoto's Royal and Culinary Charms
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the solemn history of emperors with the vibrant energy of Kyoto's bustling marketplace. It was a day of serene gardens and savory delights, a true taste of what this city has to offer. I started with a plan, a list of places I wanted to see, but as always, Kyoto had its own agenda, leading me down unexpected paths and into hidden corners.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Khaos Spice Diner. I had read about this place and its unique take on curry, a fusion of Indian spices and Japanese dashi. It sounded intriguing, and I was eager to try it. The diner was cozy, filled with film posters and reggae music, a surprisingly chill vibe for a place serving up such flavorful food. I opted for the three-curry plate, a chaotic medley of pork keema, chicken, and a mushroom and ground beef curry. Each bite was an explosion of flavor, the tart pickles on the side providing a welcome jolt of brightness. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
Fueled by curry, I made my way to the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The palace, once home to Japan's emperors, is now open to the public, offering a glimpse into the country's rich history. As I walked through the sprawling grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The architecture was stunning, the intricate details a testament to the craftsmanship of generations past. The palace exuded a sense of solemnity, a reminder of the power and responsibility that once resided within its walls. I learned that the palace was holding a special spring opening, exhibiting paintings and other works for the first time, but unfortunately, I was a bit too late as it ended on March 2nd. Still, there was much to see and appreciate.

Next to the Imperial Palace is Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, a welcome respite from the city's hustle and bustle. The garden is vast, a sprawling green space that offers a sense of tranquility. I wandered along its winding paths, admiring the meticulously manicured lawns, the serene ponds, and the vibrant cherry trees. According to my research, the cherry blossom season is nearly here, and Kyoto offers plenty of breathtaking viewing locations. The Kyoto Gyoen National Garden is known to have weeping cherry trees, and the Hanami lasts from mid-March to late April. I took a moment to sit by one of the ponds, listening to the gentle sounds of nature, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. It was the perfect place to reflect on the day so far and to recharge for the adventures that lay ahead. I even spotted a few early bloomers, a sign that spring was indeed on its way.

From the serene gardens, I ventured into the heart of Kyoto's culinary scene: Nishiki Market. Known as Kyoto's Kitchen, Nishiki Market is a vibrant, bustling marketplace filled with vendors selling everything from fresh seafood to pickled vegetables to traditional sweets. The market was a feast for the senses, a kaleidoscope of colors, smells, and sounds. I wandered through the narrow aisles, sampling various delicacies, marveling at the array of ingredients on display. I tried some fresh seafood, grilled skewers, and some local pickles. The energy of the market was infectious, the vendors calling out their wares, the crowds of people eager to sample the local flavors. I read somewhere that the best time to visit Nishiki Market is during the weekdays, ideally from Tuesday to Friday, to avoid the weekend crowds. I was glad I came on a Thursday, as it was busy but not overwhelming.

For lunch, I decided to stay in Nishiki Market and try Saishuan Shiraki. It was a small, intimate izakaya, run by a charming woman. Despite its small size, it has an extensive vegan menu with amazing flavors. I booked a reservation through Facebook. I was able to try smaller portions but more courses so I could try more dishes. Everything was super delicious and prepared in authentic Kyoto-specific style. I learned that the owner was charming and went out of her way to make my experience amazing, both with her cooking and great conversation. It was a truly unique experience, a journey through the Japanese traditional kitchen.

As evening approached, I made my way to Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi for dinner. This restaurant is located along the Takase River, creating a relaxed atmosphere for adults. All of the seats are counter seats, allowing me to see a wide variety of cooking techniques performed by the chef. I decided to go with a steak, and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. The service was outstanding, and the team was exceptional. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploring Kyoto's culinary scene.

To cap off the night, I decided to check out Kyoto Star Bar. Located down a narrow alley off Pontocho Street, this bar is known for its authentic atmosphere and kimono-clad bartenders. I ordered a Ki No Bi Negroni and enjoyed the classy ambiance. The staff was great, and the cocktails were beautifully crafted and balanced. It was a perfect way to relax after a long day of sightseeing.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Ryoan-ji, Kinkaku-ji, and Daitoku-ji Temple. I'm looking forward to exploring more of Kyoto's temples and gardens. I'm also planning to do some shopping at Japan Culture & Character Shop Guf 京都店. It should be another exciting day in this beautiful city.
As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Kyoto has a way of captivating you, of drawing you in with its beauty, its history, and its culture. It's a city that rewards exploration, that offers something new around every corner. And as I look forward to tomorrow's adventures, I know that Kyoto still has many more surprises in store.
