Whispers of the Past

Another day in Kyoto, and another opportunity to lose myself in its timeless beauty. Today was all about embracing the tranquil side of the city, seeking out spots where I could reflect and soak in the atmosphere. It was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to wander without a strict agenda, and simply let the spirit of Kyoto guide my steps.

My morning started with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Nakamura. I always enjoy a traditional Japanese breakfast and it was a great way to start the day. Fuelled up, I set off to walk the Philosopher's Path. The path, a serene canal-side walk, is named after Nishida Kitaro, a renowned philosopher who used to meditate while strolling along it. Even though the cherry blossoms weren't quite in full bloom yet, there were hints of pink in the buds, promising a spectacular display in the coming weeks. The walk itself was incredibly peaceful, the gentle sound of the water and the quiet murmur of other visitors created a calming atmosphere.

I find that these moments of quiet contemplation are essential, especially when travelling solo. It's a chance to check in with myself, to process everything I'm seeing and experiencing, and to simply be present in the moment. The Philosopher's Path was the perfect place for this. I took my time, stopping to admire the small shrines and temples that dotted the route, each with its own unique charm and history. I even spotted a couple of cats lounging in the sun, adding to the idyllic scene. It reminded me of walking along the canal back home in Truro, though admittedly, the scenery here was a touch more exotic.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its grand temples and gardens, but also in its quiet corners, where the spirit of the city truly resides.

Next on my list was Nanzen-ji Temple, a sprawling Zen temple complex known for its impressive Sanmon gate and its unique blend of traditional architecture and European influences. The temple was founded by Emperor Kameyama and it became one of the most important Zen temples in Japan. The sheer scale of the place was breathtaking, and I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the various halls and gardens. The Hojo Garden, with its meticulously raked gravel and carefully placed stones, was particularly impressive. It's amazing how much peace and tranquility can be found in such a simple, yet elegant design. I paid the small fee to climb the Sanmon gate, and the view from the top was well worth it. From there, I could see the entire temple complex laid out before me, with the mountains in the distance providing a stunning backdrop.

One of the more unexpected features of Nanzen-ji was the Roman-style aqueduct that runs through the temple grounds. Built during the Meiji era, it's a reminder of Japan's rapid modernization and its willingness to embrace foreign influences. It felt a bit out of place at first, but it somehow added to the temple's unique character. I took a moment to sit by the aqueduct, listening to the rushing water and reflecting on the blend of old and new that defines Kyoto.

Lunch was at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO Restaurant, which was close to Nanzen-ji. It was in a lovely setting and the food was delicious. It was a welcome break before heading to my next destination.

In the afternoon, I made my way to Heian Shrine, a relatively modern shrine built to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding. While it may not have the same historical weight as some of the other temples and shrines in the city, it's still a beautiful and impressive site. The bright vermilion buildings and the vast courtyard create a sense of grandeur, and the gardens are particularly lovely. I spent some time wandering through the gardens, admiring the cherry trees and the serene ponds. Although I didn't spot Olivia, I imagined she would have enjoyed the peace and the beauty of the gardens. Perhaps I'll bring her here one day.

I learned that Heian Shrine is known for its Jidai Matsuri (Festival of Ages), held annually on October 22nd. The festival features a parade of people dressed in historical costumes, representing different periods of Japanese history. It sounds like quite a spectacle, and something I'd love to see if I ever find myself in Kyoto in October. I also discovered that Heian Shrine hosts various Hanami parties and cultural events during the cherry blossom season, allowing visitors to enjoy the festive atmosphere while appreciating the blossoms. It's a shame I'm a bit too early for the full bloom, but even the hints of pink were enough to give me a taste of what's to come.

Before dinner, I decided to do a bit of shopping at Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. It was a great place to pick up a few souvenirs and gifts for the family back home. I managed to find a beautiful silk scarf for Olivia and a couple of quirky t-shirts for Ethan. I even treated myself to a new lens for my camera, hoping to capture some of the stunning landscapes I've been seeing here in Kyoto.

Dinner tonight was at Chihana, a traditional restaurant known for its authentic Kyoto cuisine. It was a delightful experience, and a perfect way to end a day of exploring the city. The food was exquisite, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

As I sit here now, back in my room at Hotel Gion Misen, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had today. Kyoto has a way of slowing you down, of making you appreciate the simple things in life. It's a city that nourishes the soul, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to spend these days here.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Nishiki Market. I'm also hoping to find a nice bar in the evening to relax and enjoy a drink. I've heard good things about Kyoto Star Bar, so that might be worth checking out. Until then, it's time for a good night's sleep, ready for another day of adventure in this captivating city.

This solo trip has been a fantastic journey of self-discovery and exploration, reminding me of the importance of taking time for myself and embracing new experiences. It's a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones we take alone.

And who knows, maybe Olivia will join me next time. After all, sharing these experiences with the one you love can only make them even more special.
