Exploring the Wonders of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park
Day 6: A Day of Serene Discoveries in Phong Nha-Ke Bang
Explore the tranquil beauty of Phong Nha-Ke Bang with a visit to the Son River and the Semiwild Enclosure. A perfect day of nature.
Tranquility by the River Son and Beyond
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a welcome change of pace after our more adventurous cave expeditions. Olivia and I decided to soak in the serene beauty of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, focusing on the landscapes and local life rather than delving deep underground. It was a day of simple pleasures, delicious food, and a deeper connection with the natural world.
Our morning began at The Rice House, a charming spot known for its delicious breakfast options. I opted for a hearty bowl of pho, while Olivia enjoyed some fresh fruit and yogurt. The atmosphere was relaxed, and it was a great way to start the day. Feeling fueled for our adventures, we set off towards the Bờ bắc sông Son, the northern bank of the Son River.

The views along the Son River were simply breathtaking. The limestone cliffs rose majestically from the water, creating a stunning backdrop. We decided to take a leisurely stroll along the riverbank, soaking in the tranquility and snapping photos of the picturesque scenery. It was the perfect opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of this region. I couldn't help but think how different this was from my usual brewery tours back in Kelowna, but equally rewarding in its own way.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the quietest moments.
Next on our itinerary was the Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure, a sanctuary for animals being rehabilitated before their release back into the wild. This was an experience I was particularly looking forward to, as it combined our love for nature with a chance to support conservation efforts. The enclosure is designed to provide a natural habitat for various species, allowing them to roam freely while offering visitors a rare glimpse into their lives.

As we walked through the enclosure, we were captivated by the lush greenery and the sounds of wildlife. We spotted monkeys from afar and appreciated the effort to provide a natural environment for these animals. Although some of the paths were a bit overgrown, the rugged beauty and tranquility of the area more than made up for it. It was heartwarming to see these creatures in a setting that closely resembled their natural habitat.
For lunch, we headed to PHONG NHA FAMILY RESTAURANT, recommended for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. We shared a variety of dishes, including stir-fried noodles with tofu and vegetables, and some flavorful spring rolls. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the food was delicious. It felt like a genuine taste of Vietnamese hospitality.

In the late afternoon, seeking a bit of refreshment, we ventured to the Pub with cold beer. The ride there was an adventure in itself, navigating the somewhat rough roads, but it was well worth it. The pub was a quirky, laid-back place with hammocks, a pool table, and a welcoming atmosphere. I enjoyed a cold beer while Olivia relaxed in a hammock, enjoying the views of the Bong Lai Valley. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

The Pub with Cold Beer is known for its unique farm-to-table experience, where you can even select a chicken that will be prepared fresh for your meal. While we opted for a different dish, the concept was intriguing and certainly added to the pub's distinctive charm. Apparently, the peanut sauce is incredible, made from peanuts grown right there.
For dinner, we decided to try Son Doong Restaurant, known for its charming and rustic ambiance. The cozy cabins and quaint huts provided a perfect setting for a private and relaxing meal. We opted for a set platter featuring a variety of Vietnamese dishes, which were well-portioned and satisfying. It was a delightful way to end our day of tranquil discoveries.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm reminded of the simple joys of travel – the beauty of nature, the warmth of human connection, and the deliciousness of local cuisine. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has a way of captivating the soul, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore its wonders with Olivia.
Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the park, visiting Phong Nha Ke Bang itself and the Phong Nha Botanic Garden. I’m particularly excited about the Botanic Garden, as Olivia has a keen interest in botany, something she picked up from her librarian mother back in the UK. I’m sure it will be a highlight for her, and I’m looking forward to learning more about the unique flora of this region. I'm also hoping to find a nice spot to capture some landscape photos, maybe even try my hand at some astrophotography if the skies are clear. Until then, goodnight from Phong Nha!
I almost forgot, I need to remember to buy some sunscreen. That completely slipped my mind when packing. I'm glad I remembered the camera though! I would have never forgiven myself if I had forgotten that.
I'm also starting to get a bit of inspiration for a new brew back home. Maybe something with some local Vietnamese flavors? A rice beer perhaps? I'll have to experiment when I get back to Kelowna.
Another great day with Olivia, I'm looking forward to what tomorrow brings.
