Explore the serene beauty of Phong Nha Botanic Garden and indulge in the local cuisine. Join us for a day of nature and gastronomy!
Nature's Embrace and Local Flavors
Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the natural beauty and local culture of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Olivia and I set out to explore the Phong Nha Botanic Garden, followed by a culinary journey through some of the town's best eateries. It was a day that perfectly blended adventure with relaxation, and gave us a deeper appreciation for this region of Vietnam.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bamboo Chopsticks. I'd heard great things about this place, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The restaurant champions sustainability by minimizing plastic use and sourcing ingredients locally. I went for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, while Olivia opted for a lighter, more Western-style meal. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore the natural wonders that awaited us.
Our first stop was the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage site is renowned for its stunning karst landscapes and extensive cave systems. Although we didn't venture into any caves today, just being surrounded by such natural beauty was an experience in itself. The park is a must-see for any outdoor enthusiast, and we were excited to delve deeper into its offerings.
Next, we headed to the Phong Nha Botanic Garden. This serene haven is a protection area for local flora and fauna, boasting over 500 plant species and various native animal species. The garden offers three different trails, each catering to a different sense of adventure. We opted for the 1.5-hour route, which took us past the Exhibition Hall, the Animal Rehabilitation Zone, and finally to the Gio Waterfall.
The journey through the Botanic Garden was a reminder of the simple joys of connecting with nature, a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of daily life.
The Exhibition Hall was a great introduction, showcasing rare and precious animal and plant specimens typical of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. It was fascinating to learn about the diverse ecosystem we were about to explore. As we ventured deeper into the forest, the air grew cooler, and the sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves.
The Animal Rehabilitation Zone was particularly heartwarming. It's wonderful to see the efforts being made to protect and care for the local wildlife. From there, we continued to Vang Anh Lake. Though we didn't swim, it was tempting to relax by the shore. Apparently, it's a great place for swimming, camping, and bird watching.
The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the Gio Waterfall. The relatively short and light hike led us directly to this natural wonder, and the sight of the cascading water was truly breathtaking. We spent some time simply admiring the view and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The Botanic Garden is beautiful all year round, but I must say, November seems to be an ideal time to visit, with dry weather perfect for trekking.
After our refreshing nature walk, it was time to indulge in some local cuisine. For lunch, we chose The Villas Restaurant, known as one of Phong Nha's most beautiful eating places. Situated along the Son River, surrounded by karst mountains, the views were as delightful as the food. I decided to try a Vietnamese dish, while Olivia went for a familiar Western option. Both were delicious, and the ambiance of the restaurant made the experience even more special.
In the late afternoon, we stopped by Đặc sản, cafe Hương Rừng, a local shop, to pick up some local specialties and coffee. I always enjoy bringing back a taste of the places we visit, and this little shop had a great selection of local products. Olivia, of course, was on the lookout for some interesting coffee beans to add to her collection.
As evening approached, we made our way to Nhà Hàng Hải Sản Nhật Phong 3 for dinner. This seafood restaurant is known for its fresh and flavorful dishes. I was eager to try some authentic Vietnamese seafood, and I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. We enjoyed a variety of seafood dishes, each one bursting with flavor.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I appreciate these kinds of experiences. Getting out into nature, exploring local culture, and indulging in delicious food – it's what makes traveling so rewarding. And sharing these moments with Olivia makes it even more special.
Tomorrow, we're planning to visit The Duck Stop and Hang Tra Ang. I've heard that The Duck Stop is quite a unique experience, and I'm looking forward to seeing what it's all about. And of course, we'll be sampling more of the local cuisine, with breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant, lunch at ARTIST'S ZONE, and dinner at Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant. We might even check out Dubai Pub Phong Nha for a nightcap. It sounds like another exciting day ahead!
As I sit here, penning down our adventures, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore the beauty and culture of Vietnam. It's moments like these that make life so rich and fulfilling. And I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.
Until then, cheers from Phong Nha!

I opted for a traditional Pho, while Olivia enjoyed a delicious Banh Mi. The food was fresh, flavorful, and prepared with care – a true taste of Vietnam.
With our appetites satisfied, we ventured into the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, eager to explore the natural wonders that awaited us. Although we didn't have time for a full-blown caving expedition, we decided to visit the Phong Nha Botanic Garden, a hidden gem within the park.
The Botanic Garden is a sanctuary of biodiversity, showcasing the region's unique flora and fauna. As we strolled along the well-maintained trails, we were surrounded by lush greenery, towering trees, and the soothing sounds of nature. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
We chose the shortest of the three trails, a leisurely 1.5-hour loop that led us to the Gio Waterfall. The path was easy to navigate, making it perfect for a relaxed and enjoyable hike. Along the way, we stopped to admire the diverse plant life, from delicate orchids to towering hardwoods. We even spotted a few colorful birds flitting through the canopy.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like a quiet walk through a garden.
The Gio Waterfall was a sight to behold. The water cascaded down the rocks with a gentle roar, creating a refreshing mist that cooled our skin. We sat on a nearby bench, taking in the beauty of the scene and feeling grateful for the opportunity to connect with nature.
After our rejuvenating walk, we were ready for lunch. We decided to try The Villas Restaurant, known for its stunning location along the Son River. The restaurant was beautifully designed, with open-air seating that offered breathtaking views of the surrounding karst mountains.
The menu featured a mix of Vietnamese and Western dishes, and we both opted for local specialties. I tried the Cao Lau, a regional noodle dish with pork and greens, while Olivia savored the Banh Xeo, a crispy crepe filled with shrimp and bean sprouts. The food was delicious, and the setting was simply magical.
In the late afternoon, we stopped by Đặc sản, cafe Hương Rừng, a local shop, to pick up some local specialties and coffee. I always enjoy bringing back a taste of the places we visit, and this little shop had a great selection of local products.
