Kerala's Quiet Charms

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to soak in the unhurried pace of life that defines the Kerala Backwaters. It’s amazing how quickly you adapt to the rhythm of a place, and after several days here, I'm finding myself drawn into the tranquility. We ventured out to experience a few local gems, each offering its unique perspective on this beautiful region.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cheenavala Restaurant. Lena and I enjoyed some traditional Kerala dishes, while Sophia devoured a stack of fluffy appams. It’s always a joy to see her embrace new flavors with such enthusiasm. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a taste of Kerala's culinary delights. The staff was incredibly polite, and the ambiance was beautiful. After breakfast, we decided to head towards Kumbalangi View Point.

The drive to Kumbalangi was an experience in itself. The roads wound through lush green landscapes, with glimpses of the backwaters peeking through the trees. As we approached Kumbalangi, the scenery transformed into a picturesque tapestry of waterways, coconut groves, and traditional houses. It felt like stepping into a postcard.

At Kumbalangi View Point, the view was indeed breathtaking. The backwaters stretched out before us, dotted with traditional Chinese fishing nets. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of the water and the earth. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to simply be present and appreciate the beauty of nature. Sophia was fascinated by the fishing nets, and I tried my best to explain how they worked, though I suspect my explanation was a bit too technical for her. Lena, ever the artist, was captivated by the play of light on the water, snapping photos from every angle.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of settings.

After spending a peaceful hour at Kumbalangi, we drove towards Munnar for lunch at Barbeque Bay by Club Mahindra. The drive was quite long, but the scenery was worth it. The restaurant had a friendly staff and prompt service. The atmosphere was spectacular, and the food was delicious. I tried their signature grilled dishes, which were highly recommended.

Our next stop was Echo Point in Munnar. The name is quite literal; shout, and you'll hear your voice bounce back at you. Sophia had an absolute blast yelling into the valley, giggling as her echoes returned. It was a bit touristy, but the sheer joy on Sophia's face made it worthwhile. The surrounding hills and tea plantations provided a stunning backdrop. Lena and Sophia took some beautiful photos, while I enjoyed the refreshing climate.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way back towards Kochi, with one more stop in mind. I had read about Back Water Aquatics Kochi – an aquascaping and aquarium shop. Now, I've always been fascinated by aquariums, and the idea of creating a miniature underwater world is incredibly appealing. Plus, I needed to get Sophia a souvenir, and I thought she might like a little fish friend.

Finding the shop was a bit of an adventure, tucked away in a quiet corner of Kochi. But once we stepped inside, we were transported to a different realm. The shop was filled with tanks of all shapes and sizes, each meticulously aquascaped with intricate rock formations, lush plants, and colorful fish. It was like walking through an underwater art gallery. Sophia was immediately captivated, her eyes wide with wonder as she pointed out her favorite fish. I was equally impressed by the level of detail and artistry that went into each aquascape.

I spoke with one of the staff members, Roy, who was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about aquascaping. He patiently answered all my questions, explaining the different techniques and equipment involved. He even showed Sophia how to feed the fish, which she thought was the coolest thing ever. We ended up buying a small starter aquarium for Sophia, complete with a few colorful fish and some basic decorations. She named one of the fish Sparkle, and she's already planning out the perfect aquascape for her new underwater friend.

For dinner, we headed to Kebab Ki Dukaan at the Club Mahindra Cherai Beach Resort. It was the perfect way to end a long day. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. We enjoyed some tasty kebabs, while Sophia enjoyed some ice cream. It was a great way to relax and unwind after a long day.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the diversity and beauty of the Kerala Backwaters. From the serene viewpoints to the vibrant aquatic life, there's something here for everyone. And as we prepare for tomorrow's adventure – a Poovar Backwater Cruise and hopefully a stunning sunset view from Cheepunkal – I'm filled with anticipation for what new wonders await us. It's these moments, shared with my family, that make travel so enriching and unforgettable.

The warmth of the people, the tranquility of the landscape, and the simple joys of discovery – it's all woven together into a tapestry of unforgettable experiences. And as we continue our journey through the Kerala Backwaters, I know that there are many more stories waiting to be told.
