Family Adventure on Shikoku Island: Exploring Japan’s Hidden Gem
Day 4: A Day of History and Healing in Matsuyama
Explore Matsuyama's iconic castle, indulge in local cuisine, and unwind in Japan's oldest hot spring. A perfect blend of culture and relaxation.
Stepping Back in Time in Matsuyama
Another day, another adventure here on Shikoku Island! Today was all about immersing ourselves in the rich history and culture of Matsuyama, followed by some much-needed relaxation. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're exploring a place as vibrant as this. Olivia, Ethan and I were all excited to see what today would bring, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Yuzuan Restaurant. It was a delightful start to the day, fueling us up for our adventures. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Olivia enjoyed a more Western-style meal. Ethan, of course, went straight for the carbs! After breakfast, we set off to explore the iconic Matsuyama Castle.
Experience the grandeur of Matsuyama Castle, a historic fortress showcasing Japan's rich heritage and stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea.
Perched atop Mount Katsuyama, the castle is an impressive sight. We decided to take the ropeway up, which offered stunning panoramic views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea. The castle itself is one of only twelve in Japan to still have its original keep, making it a must-see for history buffs like myself. I found it fascinating that Matsuyama Castle was built in 1603 by Kato Yoshiaki and that its construction spanned about a quarter of a century. It's incredible to think about the generations of people who have walked these grounds before us.
The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
We spent a few hours exploring the castle grounds, admiring the intricate architecture and learning about the castle's history. Ethan was particularly impressed by the displays of armour, while Olivia enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of the castle gardens. I took the opportunity to snap some photos, trying to capture the beauty of the castle against the backdrop of the city.
After our historical adventure, it was time for lunch. We headed to Munagin, a local restaurant known for its delicious regional specialties. I decided to try the local sea bream dish, which was absolutely divine. Olivia opted for a tempura set, while Ethan went for a hearty bowl of ramen. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning of exploring.
With our bellies full, we made our way to the much-anticipated Dogo Onsen Main Building.
Discover the serene beauty and historic charm of Dogo Onsen Main Building, a must-visit onsen in Matsuyama, Japan, rich in culture and relaxation.
Said to be one of Japan's oldest hot springs, Dogo Onsen has a history stretching back some 3,000 years. The current building, a beautiful wooden structure, was built in 1894 and is an iconic symbol of the town. It's even said to have inspired the bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's film, *Spirited Away*!
Before heading to the onsen, we took a stroll around Dogo Onsen town. There are many shops and restaurants, and Ethan was particularly taken by the Botchan Karakuri Clock. Every hour, the clock puts on a little show with characters from Natsume Soseki's novel *Botchan*. It was a delightful spectacle that brought a smile to everyone's face.
Finally, it was time to experience the onsen itself. The Dogo Onsen Main Building recently completed a 5.5-year renovation in July 2024, blending historic charm with modern accessibility. The hot spring waters are said to have healing properties, and I certainly felt relaxed and rejuvenated after soaking in them. Olivia and I took our time, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings. Ethan, on the other hand, was more interested in the novelty of the experience and spent most of his time splashing around in the water.
As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at Ombelico.

I had read great things about this place, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the food was simply divine. We enjoyed a delicious meal of local seafood and other regional specialties. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploring.
To cap off the evening, I ventured out for a nightcap to the Irish Pub Amontillado, while Olivia and Ethan decided to call it a night.
Discover the charm of Irish Pub Amontillado in Kochi, where traditional izakaya meets the warmth of Irish hospitality, offering a unique dining experience.
I know, an Irish pub in Japan sounds a bit odd, but I was curious. Turns out, it was a cozy little spot with a decent selection of beers on tap. I chatted with some locals and fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughs. It was a fun way to unwind and soak in the local atmosphere. I learned they have beers from around the world and unusual cocktails. It reminded me of my days back in Truro, when I used to frequent the local pubs with my mates.
As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had today. Matsuyama is a truly special place, and I'm so glad we had the opportunity to explore it. Tomorrow, we're heading to the Iya Valley, known for its remote location and stunning natural beauty. We plan to visit the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore and the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge. I'm looking forward to seeing the natural beauty of Shikoku and experiencing more of its hidden gems. I'll also be sure to grab breakfast at Restaurant&Cafe Riina before heading out, and plan to grab lunch at Tosa Rokkon.
Until then, cheers from Shikoku!
