Discover the serene beauty of Ritsurin Garden and the rich culture of Shikoku Village. Join our family adventure in Takamatsu!
Finding Serenity in Takamatsu
Today was a day of exploration and reflection as we delved into the heart of Takamatsu. From meticulously manicured gardens to a village brimming with history, we experienced a blend of tranquility and cultural immersion that left us feeling refreshed and inspired. It’s amazing how a change of scenery and pace can truly rejuvenate the soul.
Our day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Okamura. I've always been a fan of starting the day like a local when travelling. I opted for the classic Japanese set breakfast – grilled fish, miso soup, rice, and a few pickled vegetables. It was simple, yet satisfying, and provided the perfect fuel for the day ahead. Olivia went for a more Western style breakfast, while Ethan, predictably, chose something involving noodles.
Ritsurin Garden: A Stroll Through Paradise
After breakfast, we made our way to Ritsurin Garden. The garden is vast, and I mean vast. It’s divided into a Japanese-style garden in the south and a Western-style garden in the north, all set against the backdrop of Mt. Shiun. The meticulous care given to every tree and stone was evident, and it felt like stepping into a living painting. The Japanese truly have mastered the art of creating serene spaces.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
We wandered along the winding paths, crossing charming bridges and pausing to admire the perfectly sculpted trees. Ethan, surprisingly, was captivated by the koi ponds, spending a good half-hour watching the colourful fish glide through the water. Olivia, ever the librarian, was engrossed in the history of the garden, reading aloud from our guidebook about the feudal lords who originally designed it. I, of course, was on the lookout for the perfect photo opportunity, trying to capture the essence of this tranquil paradise.
One of the highlights was the tea house, where we stopped for a traditional matcha tea ceremony. Sipping the bitter tea while overlooking the serene landscape was a truly Zen experience. Even Ethan seemed to appreciate the moment, putting aside his teenage cynicism for a brief period of quiet contemplation.
Shikoku Village: A Journey Through Time
Next on our itinerary was Shikoku Village, an open-air museum showcasing traditional buildings from around the Shikoku region. As we stepped through the entrance, it felt like we were transported back in time. Old farmhouses, merchant shops, and even a traditional theatre were meticulously preserved, offering a glimpse into the island's rich cultural heritage. The weather was warm, typical for July, but thankfully, the village was shaded by trees, making the stroll pleasant.

I was particularly fascinated by the old sugar mill, imagining the backbreaking work that went into producing sugar in the old days. Olivia was drawn to the traditional paper-making workshop, where she chatted with the artisan about the intricate process involved. Ethan, surprisingly, found the old fire station intriguing, marveling at the primitive firefighting equipment.
As we explored the village, we stumbled upon a small noodle shop, where we stopped for lunch. I opted for the local specialty, Sanuki Udon, thick, chewy noodles in a flavourful broth. It was simple, yet delicious, and provided a welcome respite from the heat. It reminded me of some of the hearty pub lunches back in Cornwall. Olivia and Ethan tried different variations of the udon, both equally impressed.
Dinner and Drinks in Takamatsu
For dinner, we decided to try Osusowake Shokudo Mado, a local eatery known for its home-style cooking and warm atmosphere. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign, and we were lucky to snag a table. The menu featured a variety of classic Japanese dishes, all made with fresh, local ingredients. I went for the grilled fish set, while Olivia opted for the vegetable tempura. Ethan, of course, chose the tonkatsu (pork cutlet), a safe bet for any teenager.

The food was delicious, simple, and comforting, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It felt like we were dining in someone's home, surrounded by friends and family. The owner was incredibly friendly, chatting with us about our travels and offering recommendations for other places to visit in Shikoku. It's these kinds of experiences that make travelling so rewarding.
To cap off the evening, I convinced Olivia to join me for a quick pint at Beer Wine and Ate Mangetsu, a local bar known for its craft beer selection. Ethan, ever the teenager, decided to stay back at our guesthouse and catch up on his video games. The bar was cozy and intimate, with a laid-back vibe that was perfect for unwinding after a long day of exploring. I sampled a couple of local brews, both hoppy and refreshing, while Olivia enjoyed a glass of Japanese wine. We chatted about our favourite moments from the day, reminiscing about the beauty of Ritsurin Garden and the charm of Shikoku Village. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we're heading inland to explore the Iya Valley and its famous vine bridge. I've heard it's a bit of a trek, but the views are well worth it. I'm also looking forward to trying some of the local cuisine, particularly the Iya soba, a type of buckwheat noodle unique to the region. Hopefully, Ethan will be up for the adventure, although I suspect I might have to bribe him with the promise of more video game time.
As I sit here, penning these thoughts, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this beautiful island with my family. It’s moments like these that make all the planning and preparation worthwhile. And who knows, maybe I'll even find some inspiration for my next homebrew.
