Saying Goodbye to Shikoku with a View

As my solo journey through Shikoku Island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences and breathtaking scenery I've encountered. Today was all about soaking in the last moments of natural beauty and indulging in the local cuisine that makes this island so unique. It was a day of contrasts, from the serene heights of Shikoku Karst to the refreshing cascades of Todoroki Falls, and a fitting farewell to this enchanting corner of Japan.

My final day in Shikoku began with a hearty breakfast at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. It was a comforting and familiar start to the day, fueling me up for the adventures that lay ahead. The weather forecast predicted overcast conditions for the morning, so I packed accordingly, grabbed my camera, and set off towards Shikoku Karst.

The drive to Shikoku Karst was an experience in itself. As I ascended, the landscape transformed, revealing rolling hills and limestone formations that stretched as far as the eye could see. The air grew crisper, and the panoramic views were simply stunning. It’s easy to see why this area is known as one of Japan's three major karst landscapes.

I parked the car and spent a couple of hours exploring the Tengu Highlands, one of the highlights of Shikoku Karst. The meadows were lush and green, dotted with grazing cows, a sight quite rare in Japan. I took my time wandering along the trails, breathing in the fresh mountain air, and snapping photos of the unique scenery. The limestone formations, sculpted by centuries of erosion, resembled flocks of sheep scattered across the hills. It was a truly tranquil experience, a world away from the bustling cityscapes I’m used to. The views from the plateau, reaching up to 1,485 meters, were incredible, with glimpses of the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Ishizuchi Mountain range to the north.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where nature's beauty speaks volumes.

After immersing myself in the serene beauty of Shikoku Karst, I decided to chase waterfalls. Todoroki Falls was my next destination, and the drive there took me through winding mountain roads and charming rural villages.

Upon arriving at Todoroki Falls, I was immediately struck by the power and beauty of the cascading water. The falls are part of Japan's top 100 waterfalls, and it’s easy to see why. The water plunged down 82 meters in three tiers, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. I spent some time on the observation deck, taking in the dynamic view and feeling the refreshing spray on my face. According to local lore, the three glittering blue basins are tied to the tale of the Heike Princess Tamaori. The area was lush and green, with walking trails that allowed me to get closer to the falls and appreciate their grandeur.

For lunch, I headed to Tataki Kobo, eager to sample more of Kochi's famous seared bonito. This restaurant is known for its authentic, straw-roasted bonito, and I was excited to experience this local delicacy. I ordered the quick-seared bonito, served by the gram, and it was absolutely divine. The smoky flavor from the straw perfectly complemented the fresh, delicate taste of the fish. It was a culinary experience I won't soon forget. Knowing my love for craft beer, I also selected a Tosa sake to enjoy with my meal.

With the afternoon stretching out before me, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at AEON MALL Kochi. I wasn't necessarily looking for anything specific, but I enjoy browsing local shops and seeing what they have to offer. The mall was bustling with activity, and I spent a pleasant hour or so exploring the various stores, from clothing boutiques to electronics shops. I picked up a few small souvenirs for Olivia and Ethan, wanting to bring back a piece of Shikoku for them. I was able to find a portable phone charger, since I had forgotten to pack one.

As evening approached, it was time for my final meal in Shikoku. I chose Tosa Rokkon, a restaurant in Kami, Kochi, known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. I wanted to end my trip on a high note, savoring the flavors of this region one last time. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I ordered a selection of local specialties, including more seared bonito (of course!), grilled vegetables, and a flavorful rice dish. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a culinary journey that captured the essence of Shikoku.

Reflecting on my solo adventure, I realize how much I've grown and learned. Venturing out on my own allowed me to fully immerse myself in the local culture, connect with fellow travelers, and discover hidden gems that I might have missed otherwise. From the vibrant city of Takamatsu to the serene Iya Valley and the stunning coastline of Cape Muroto, Shikoku Island has captured my heart. And the local craft beer scene? Well, that was an added bonus that made the trip even more enjoyable.

As I prepare to leave Shikoku tomorrow, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had and the memories I've made. This island has a special charm that I won't soon forget. It's a place where ancient traditions meet modern life, where natural beauty abounds, and where the people are warm and welcoming. I know I'll be back someday, perhaps with Olivia in tow, to share the magic of Shikoku with her. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of this incredible solo adventure.

Tomorrow marks the end of my journey, but I'm already looking forward to sharing more travel stories and craft beer discoveries with you all. Kampai!
