A Day of Cultural Heights and Culinary Depths

Today was a day of contrasts, blending artistic immersion with stunning natural vistas and, of course, the pursuit of local flavors. From exploring a museum filled with world masterpieces to soaring above the city on a ropeway, it was a day that truly captured the essence of Shikoku.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone in Nankoku [itinerary]. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and an array of pickled vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I must admit, sometimes I miss my usual toast back in Kelowna, but diving into the local cuisine is part of the adventure, isn't it?

First on the agenda was the Otsuka Museum of Art [itinerary]. I'd heard whispers about this place, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer scale of it. The museum boasts the largest permanent exhibition space in Japan, filled with life-size ceramic reproductions of Western art masterpieces. From ancient murals to iconic paintings, it was a journey through art history.

I wandered through halls adorned with replicas of masterpieces from the Sistine Chapel to Van Gogh's sunflowers. The museum houses over 1000 works selected from 190 museums in 25 countries, showcasing the development of Western art from antiquity to modern times. What struck me most was the quality of the reproductions. Each piece was meticulously crafted on ceramic boards, ensuring vivid colors and durability for centuries. It’s quite something to stand before a recreation of the Last Supper and feel a sense of its original grandeur.

I spent hours lost in the museum's labyrinthine corridors, marveling at the breadth of human creativity. It's amazing to see so many world masterpieces all in one place. Being able to photograph everything was a bonus, since the works are replicas.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After the museum, I headed to Tokushima City to experience the Bizan Ropeway [itinerary]. Mt. Bizan, or Eyebrow Mountain, is a symbol of Tokushima, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes. The ropeway, departing from the Awa Odori Kaikan, promised a scenic ascent to the summit.

As the cable car glided upwards, the cityscape unfolded beneath me. The Yoshino River snaked its way through the plains, and in the distance, I could glimpse the Seto Inland Sea. It was a clear day, and the views were simply breathtaking. From the top, you can see Tokushima City, Awaji Island, and the Kii Peninsula.

At the summit, I strolled around, taking in the 360-degree vista. There's something magical about seeing a city spread out before you, its buildings and streets miniaturized by the distance. I could see why Bizan is such a popular spot, especially at night when the city lights twinkle below.

For lunch, I ventured to Tosa Rokkon, a restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine [itinerary, 15]. Nestled in Kami, Kochi, this culinary gem blends traditional flavors with modern techniques. I savored a meticulously prepared meal, highlighting the freshest local ingredients. The warm ambiance and exceptional service made it a delightful experience.

I opted for a selection of local specialties, including seared tuna and a flavorful dashi-based soup. Each dish was a testament to the region's culinary heritage, and I left feeling satisfied and content. It reminded me a bit of some of the hidden gems Olivia and I have discovered in Kelowna, where local ingredients shine.

As evening approached, I found myself in Tokushima once again, ready for a taste of the local nightlife. I stumbled upon BAR OOKUNI [itinerary], a cozy spot known for its craft cocktails and relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

The bartender, a friendly chap with a passion for mixology, whipped up a concoction using local citrus fruits and a dash of sake. It was a refreshing and unique drink, a testament to the creativity of Shikoku's bartenders. Sipping my drink, I chatted with some locals, learning more about the region's culture and traditions. I love these moments of connection, when you realize that despite the distance, people are people, with shared hopes and dreams.

For dinner, I decided on Munagin [itinerary], an eel restaurant in Gomemmachi. Eel, or unagi, is a delicacy in Japan, and I was eager to try it prepared in the local style. The restaurant was small and intimate, with a traditional Japanese decor. I ordered the unagi don, a bowl of rice topped with grilled eel and a sweet soy sauce glaze.

The eel was tender and flavorful, the glaze adding a touch of sweetness that complemented the richness of the fish. It was a truly satisfying meal, a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration. As I savored each bite, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the artistic wonders of the Otsuka Museum to the panoramic views from Mt. Bizan, it had been a day of discovery and delight.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my Shikoku adventure. I plan to visit Shikoku Karst and Todoroki Falls [itinerary]. I'll grab breakfast at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop before heading out, and lunch at Tataki Kobo [itinerary]. For my final dinner, I'm considering revisiting Tosa Rokkon [itinerary], as it left such a lasting impression. Before heading to the airport, I'll make a stop at AEON MALL Kochi for some last-minute souvenir shopping [itinerary].

As I write this, I'm already feeling a tinge of sadness that my time in Shikoku is coming to an end. But I know that the memories I've made here will last a lifetime. And who knows, maybe Olivia and I will return someday to explore more of this beautiful island.
