Chasing Waterfalls and Moroccan Charm

Today was a day of immersing ourselves even deeper into the heart of Chefchaouen. After yesterday's initial wanderings, Lena and I were eager to explore more of what this blue city had to offer. We set out with a plan to visit Ras El Ma and Plaza Uta el Hamman, two spots that promised a blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. As a software developer, I often find myself drawn to the simple, yet profound beauty of nature, and Lena, with her keen eye for design, was excited to capture the essence of Chefchaouen's unique architecture and vibrant atmosphere.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Assaada. It's always a pleasure to start the day with local flavors, and Assaada didn't disappoint. The traditional Moroccan breakfast was the perfect fuel for our explorations. It reminded me of the simple breakfasts I used to have back in Havlíčkův Brod, Czechia, before a day of tinkering with computers. Lena enjoyed the fresh bread and mint tea, commenting on the intricate patterns of the tea glasses.

Ras El Ma: Where Water Meets Life

Our first stop was Ras El Ma, a spot I had read about as a refreshing oasis just outside the bustling medina. The walk there was pleasant, offering glimpses of local life as we passed through narrow alleyways and greeted friendly locals with a simple Salaam. As we approached Ras El Ma, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and the air felt noticeably cooler.

Ras El Ma, which translates to Head of the Water in Arabic, is a spring where fresh mountain water flows into the town. It’s a communal gathering spot where locals come to wash clothes, cool off, and socialize. The scene was vibrant and full of life. Women were washing clothes in the stream, children were playing in the water, and families were enjoying the shade under the trees. Lena was immediately drawn to the scene, snapping photos of the cascading water and the colorful fabrics laid out to dry. I found myself observing the ingenuity of the locals, who have ingeniously integrated this natural resource into their daily routines. It reminded me of the sustainable practices I've been trying to incorporate into my own life back in Berlin.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue-washed walls, but in the vibrant life that unfolds within them.

We spent a good hour at Ras El Ma, simply soaking in the atmosphere. I even dipped my feet in the cool water, a welcome respite from the warm September sun. Lena struck up a conversation with a local woman who was washing clothes, learning about traditional Moroccan laundry techniques. It’s these small, authentic moments that make traveling so rewarding. As we prepared to leave, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to this place, a feeling that transcended the language barrier and cultural differences.

Plaza Uta el Hamman: The Heart of Chefchaouen

Next on our itinerary was Plaza Uta el Hamman, the main square in the heart of Chefchaouen's medina. As we walked from Ras El Ma back into the medina, the atmosphere shifted from tranquil nature to bustling urban life. The narrow streets opened up into a spacious cobblestone square lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops. The air was filled with the aroma of spices, the sound of music, and the chatter of locals and tourists alike.

Plaza Uta el Hamman is the historical and touristic nucleus of Chefchaouen. The square is surrounded by notable buildings, including the Grand Mosque with its unique octagonal minaret and the Kasbah, a clay-brown fortress that now houses the Ethnographic Museum. We decided to explore the square first, taking in the sights and sounds before delving into its historical landmarks. Lena was particularly fascinated by the intricate details of the buildings, noting the blend of Arabian and Spanish influences in the architecture. I was intrigued by the history of the square, imagining it as a training ground for riders and martial artists in centuries past.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Triana, one of the many eateries lining the plaza. We secured a table with a view of the square, providing us with prime people-watching opportunities. The menu offered a variety of Moroccan dishes, and we opted for a tagine and some grilled kebabs. The food was delicious, but the real highlight was the ambiance. We watched as locals went about their daily lives, children played in the square, and tourists snapped photos of the iconic blue buildings. It was a quintessential Chefchaouen experience.

After lunch, we explored the Kasbah, delving into the Ethnographic Museum housed within its walls. The museum offered a glimpse into the history and culture of the Chefchaouen region, showcasing traditional clothing, artifacts, and photographs. Lena, with her background in graphic design, was particularly interested in the exhibits on local crafts and textiles. I found myself drawn to the historical exhibits, learning about the region's rich and complex past. The Kasbah itself was impressive, with its sturdy walls and Andalusian-style garden providing a sense of tranquility amidst the bustling square.

As the afternoon wore on, we found ourselves drawn back to Plaza Uta el Hamman, seeking refuge in one of the many cafes lining the square. We ordered mint tea and simply sat and watched the world go by. It was a moment of pure relaxation, a chance to soak in the atmosphere and reflect on our experiences of the day. As someone who spends much of his time in front of a computer screen, I cherished these moments of unplugged connection with the world around me. Lena, ever the artist, sketched in her notebook, capturing the essence of the square in her drawings.

Evening Reflections and Tomorrow's Plans

For dinner, we decided to try Le Coin, a restaurant recommended for its local cuisine and cozy atmosphere. It was a bit further from the main square, offering a more intimate dining experience. The food was excellent, and the service was warm and welcoming. We enjoyed a leisurely meal, savoring the flavors of Morocco and sharing stories of our day's adventures.

As the evening drew to a close, we decided to check out Bar Oum Rabie. While I am not a big drinker, I do enjoy experiencing the local culture, and Lena likes to enjoy a glass of wine from time to time. The bar had a nice view of the Grand Mosque , and we enjoyed the ambiance as we reflected on our day. It was a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. The bar was lively, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the evening air.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen again for a more in-depth look, as well as Bab El Ain. Lena is also eager to explore some of the local craft shops, while I am interested in learning more about the history of the region. We also plan to visit Chefchaouen crafts.

As I write this, Lena is already asleep, dreaming of blue streets and Moroccan adventures. I, on the other hand, am savoring the quiet of the night, reflecting on the day's experiences and looking forward to what tomorrow will bring. Chefchaouen has a way of captivating you, of drawing you in with its beauty and charm. It's a place where time seems to slow down, where you can simply be present and appreciate the simple joys of life. And as a traveler, that's all you can really ask for.
