Visby's Untouched Beauty
Today was a day of exploration and reflection in Visby, as Lena and I ventured beyond the well-trodden tourist paths to discover some of the island's more secluded and serene spots. From the tranquility of botanical gardens to the haunting beauty of ancient ruins and the rugged charm of coastal cliffs, Visby revealed its layers of history and natural splendor. It was a day of simple pleasures, shared moments, and quiet contemplation, reminding us of the beauty that exists when we slow down and truly observe our surroundings.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Mizu. It's a charming spot offering Japanese-inspired cuisine with a modern twist. We enjoyed a selection of their breakfast bowls, filled with fresh ingredients and flavorful combinations. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. As a software developer, I appreciate the fusion of tradition and innovation, and Mizu certainly delivered on that front.
After breakfast, we made our way to DBW's Botanical Garden. The garden, established in 1855, is a sanctuary of diverse plant species, carefully curated to create an immersive experience for visitors. As we strolled along the winding pathways, we were enveloped by vibrant flowers, towering trees, and the gentle sounds of nature. The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of blossoms, and the sunlight filtering through the leaves created a mesmerizing play of light and shadow. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly captivated by the garden's layout and the harmonious blend of colors and textures.
The garden's appeal extends beyond its local flora, boasting an eclectic array of plants from around the globe. The intricate interplay between the local and the global, the ancient and the new, renders the Visby Botanical Garden an enchanting location. We spent a leisurely hour wandering through the garden, marveling at the Empress Tree and the vibrant rhododendron plants. The southern part of the park houses the ruins of St. Olof's church, adding a touch of historic mystique to the verdant landscape. The Botanical Garden is not just a tourist attraction; it is a haven for relaxation and exploration.

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
Leaving the serene embrace of the Botanical Garden, we set our sights on Drottens ruin. This ancient church ruin, dating back to around 1240, stands as a silent testament to Visby's rich medieval history. As we approached the site, the weathered stones seemed to whisper tales of centuries past. The Reformation in 1528 became a fatal blow for most of the churches in Visby, which also affected Drotten. The church was finally abandoned in 1528 when the bourgeoisie began to take out ransoms from the church's inventory and then fell into disrepair. Since the 1700s and up to around 1900, the tower was used as a warehouse.
Lena and I explored the skeletal remains of the church, imagining the lives of those who once gathered within its walls. The arches and columns, though eroded by time, still hinted at the grandeur of the original structure. We learned that Drotten's oldest parts are the chancel and the lower part of the tower. The church began to be built around 1240 within the oldest urban area on land that was previously built on. The oldest part is the chancel, and possibly the lower part of the tower, which is interpreted as meaning that there was an older longhouse in between, which in that case may have been built as early as the 1100s. However, excavations have not been able to show any predecessor to the current church. Somewhat later, the longhouse was built and the tower was raised. The main entrance to the church is a round-arched portal on the south side near the western corner.

The sky was overcast, casting a soft, diffused light that added to the somber yet captivating atmosphere of the ruin. It was a moment of reflection, contemplating the ebb and flow of history and the enduring power of faith. I couldn't help but think about my own journey, from a small town in Czechia to the bustling city of Berlin, and now standing here in this ancient place, connected to a lineage of human stories.
Our exploration continued to Södra hällarna, a nature reserve south of Visby. This coastal area offers a diverse landscape, with wind-driven pine forests, steep cliffs, and fossil-rich beaches. As we arrived, the fresh sea air invigorated our senses, and the panoramic views of the Baltic Sea stretched out before us.
We chose one of the three marked hiking trails and set off to explore the rugged terrain. The path led us through dense pine forests, where the sunlight dappled through the trees, creating an ethereal glow. We marveled at the ancient rock formations and the diverse flora that thrived in this unique environment. Lena, ever the adventurer, spotted several interesting fossils embedded in the rocks, sparking a lively discussion about the island's geological history.

As we reached the cliff's edge, the full force of the sea winds greeted us. The waves crashed against the rocks below, sending plumes of spray into the air. We stood there for a long moment, watching the mesmerizing dance of the sea and sky. It was a powerful reminder of the forces of nature and the beauty that can be found in the raw, untamed landscapes of Gotland.
After our invigorating hike, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Sunny Side Up Beach Store. This charming boutique offers a delightful array of beachwear and local crafts, capturing the essence of Swedish coastal life. Lena, always on the lookout for unique fashion finds, spent a happy hour browsing the store's collection. She eventually settled on a beautifully crafted, hand-painted scarf, a perfect memento of our time in Visby. I, on the other hand, found a quirky, hand-carved wooden bird, a whimsical addition to our Berlin apartment.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Hop Shed Brew Pub for a well-deserved drink. This cozy establishment, located just outside Visby's city center, is a haven for craft beer enthusiasts. The pub boasts an impressive selection of local brews, showcasing the best of Gotland's brewing scene. I opted for a dark stout, while Lena chose a refreshing pale ale. We sat in the pub's beer garden, enjoying the lively atmosphere and the camaraderie of fellow travelers.

For dinner, we had reserved a table at Värdshuset Lindgården, a classic inn located within Visby's medieval city walls. This restaurant is renowned for its focus on seasonal ingredients from local Gotland producers, offering a true taste of the island's culinary heritage. The restaurant's interior exudes a rustic charm, transporting diners back in time to the inn's opening in 1968. We savored every bite, appreciating the skill and artistry that went into each dish.
