Saying Goodbye to Yakushima
As my journey on this enchanting island comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences and natural beauty that Yakushima has offered. Today was a day of soaking in the last moments, exploring local culture, and savoring the unique flavors of this UNESCO World Heritage site. It's hard to believe my 13 days here are already over, but I'm leaving with a heart full of memories and a camera roll bursting with stunning images.
My final day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and local delicacies filled the air, providing a comforting start to the day. It felt fitting to have my last meal on the island at a place that welcomes and bids farewell to so many travelers. The restaurant had a charming, old-school vibe, reminiscent of traditional soba shops, and I enjoyed a regional cuisine before heading out for the day's adventures.

With my stomach full and spirits high, I made my way to the Yakushima Visitor Centre. I wanted to delve deeper into the island's ecology and history before departing. The center was a treasure trove of information, offering insights into the unique flora, fauna, and geological formations that make Yakushima so special. I spent a good hour exploring the exhibits, learning about the ancient cedar forests and the conservation efforts to protect this natural paradise.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments of connection with nature and local culture.
After immersing myself in knowledge at the Visitor Centre, I decided to indulge in some local shopping. I ventured to the Yakushima No Kokusan Tatami Nakajima Tatami Shop, eager to witness the artistry of tatami making. The shop was a cultural gem, showcasing traditional Japanese crafts. The owner welcomed me warmly, sharing his passion for tatami mats and the intricate process of creating them. I was fascinated by the craftsmanship and the dedication to preserving this traditional art form.

I plan to use it back in Berlin, perhaps while enjoying a cup of green tea, and reminisce about my time in Yakushima.
For lunch, I treated myself to a meal at Matsutake, a popular noodle restaurant in the southwest of Yakushima. Finding it was a mini-adventure in itself, tucked away behind another house, but the effort was well worth it. The restaurant exuded an authentic Japanese atmosphere, with tatami floor seating and a serene interior garden view of bamboo. I savored delicious soba noodles, handmade and incredibly fresh. It was a delightful culinary experience, a perfect blend of tradition and flavor.
