Exploring the Mystical Forests of Yakushima
Day 12: Spiritual Reflections and Culinary Delights: A Day of Serenity in Yakushima
Explore Yakushima's shrines, local crafts, and delicious cuisine. A day of reflection and indulgence on this enchanting island.
A Day of Quiet Contemplation
Today was a day of exploring the spiritual side of Yakushima, mixed with a healthy dose of local culture and, of course, some delicious food. It’s amazing how this island manages to blend ancient traditions with the simple pleasures of life. As my trip nears its end, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact this natural paradise has had on me.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at hiyoriya. This vegan-friendly restaurant is a gem, and I was eager to start my day with their locally sourced and beautifully presented set meal. Booking ahead was essential, as this place is quite popular, and for good reason! The fresh tofu, miso soup, brown rice, and organic vegetables were the perfect fuel for the day ahead. What a start to the day!

My first stop was Yakushima Shrine. Nestled near the mouth of the Miyauragawa River, this ancient guardian shrine exuded a sense of peace and history. As the southernmost shrine listed in the Engi Shiki, a tenth-century Japanese code of law, it felt like stepping back in time. I spent some time admiring the open-mouthed and closed-mouthed stone guardian statues, cultural properties of the town made in the mid-nineteenth century. The inner shrine, located at the summit of Mt. Miyanoura, reflects Yakushima's deep-rooted culture of mountain worship. Even though I didn't hike to the summit today, just being in the presence of such a sacred place was deeply moving.

From there, I made my way to Yahazudake Shrine, located on Cape Yahazu. The striking red torii gate that marks the entrance to a vast cave immediately caught my eye. This cave is believed to be home to the deities of fishing and marriage, adding to the mystique of the place. The views from the cape were breathtaking, and the tranquil atmosphere made it easy to lose myself in thought. The gentle sound of the ocean waves and the lush greenery surrounding the shrine created a sense of harmony that was incredibly soothing. I could easily see why this spot is considered a sacred oasis.

After a morning of spiritual exploration, it was time to immerse myself in local culture at Yakushima BLESS. This shopping mall is a vibrant hub showcasing local artistry, traditional crafts, and unique souvenirs. The spacious layout and welcoming atmosphere made it a joy to wander through the various stores. I was particularly impressed by the hand-made crafts and traditional textiles, each piece telling a story of Yakushima's rich cultural heritage. I learned about the techniques used by the artisans, gaining a deeper appreciation for the skill and dedication that goes into each creation. It was more than just a shopping trip; it was an opportunity to connect with the local community and support their craft. I ended up purchasing a few small items, perfect reminders of my time on the island.

For lunch, I headed to Kamogawa Restaurant, known for its delicious and fresh seafood. The restaurant was bustling with both locals and tourists, a testament to its popularity. I decided to try one of their local dishes, and I must say, it was a delightful culinary experience. The flying fish was prepared perfectly, and the sashimi was incredibly fresh. I also enjoyed the cozy and welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant. The staff were friendly and accommodating, making me feel right at home. I can definitely see why this place is a favorite among those seeking authentic Yakushima flavors.

The true beauty of Yakushima lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in the way it seamlessly blends nature, culture, and spirituality.
In the late afternoon, I decided to revisit a spot that had captured my heart earlier in the trip: the moss-covered forest near Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine. I wanted to soak in its magical atmosphere one last time. The forest, with its ancient cedar trees and lush, green moss, felt like a scene from a fairy tale. The light filtering through the canopy created an ethereal glow, and the sound of the nearby stream added to the sense of tranquility. I spent a couple of hours simply wandering through the forest, taking photos, and reflecting on my journey. It was the perfect way to reconnect with nature and find some inner peace.
As evening approached, I made my way to Il Mare for dinner. This Italian restaurant, located close to the airport, offered a welcome change of pace. I had heard great things about their pasta and pizza, and I was eager to try their local venison dishes. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I opted for a pasta dish with seafood, and it was absolutely delicious. The ingredients were fresh, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and contemplation. I even treated myself to a scoop of gelato for dessert, a perfect way to end the meal.

As I prepare for my final day on Yakushima, I am already planning a return trip. There are still so many places to explore and experiences to be had. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Yakushima Visitor Centre before heading to the airport. It will be a bittersweet departure, but I know that the memories and lessons I've gained here will stay with me for a lifetime. I am also looking forward to a final breakfast at Yakushima Airport Restaurant, a quick lunch at Matsutake, and a farewell dinner at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant.
I am also planning to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Yakushima No Kokusan Tatami Nakajima Tatami Shop. It will be a day of tying up loose ends and saying goodbye to this magical island. I'll make sure to share my final thoughts and reflections in my next blog post. Until then, thank you for joining me on this incredible journey!

The rain has started to fall again, a gentle reminder of Yakushima's life-giving waters. I think I'll sit on the porch of my guesthouse and listen to the sound of the rain on the leaves. It's the perfect way to end another perfect day in paradise. And maybe I'll use the time to try and figure out how to best explain all of this to Lena when I get back to Berlin.
Good night from Yakushima.
It's a bit sad to think this amazing trip is coming to an end tomorrow.
