Tropical Fruits and Coastal Lights

Today was a delightful blend of exploring Yakushima’s unique agricultural offerings and soaking in its coastal beauty. From tasting exotic fruits to standing in the shadow of a historic lighthouse, the day was filled with sensory experiences that deepened my appreciation for this island's charm. It's amazing how much variety this small island holds, and I'm excited to share the details of my day.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. As usual, the atmosphere was bustling with travelers preparing for their departures and arrivals. I enjoyed a simple but satisfying meal of grilled fish, rice, and miso soup, which provided the perfect fuel for the day’s adventures. I made sure to grab an extra onigiri for a mid-morning snack. Feeling energized, I set off to explore the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”.

Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”

The Yakushima Fruit Garden was an explosion of colors and scents. As I wandered through the lush greenery, I was immediately enveloped by the sweet aroma of tropical fruits and the vibrant hues of exotic plants. The garden is home to nearly 2,000 varieties of tropical plants and fruits, including papayas, bananas, mangoes, and guavas. It was fascinating to see these fruits growing in their natural environment, a stark contrast to the neatly arranged displays in Berlin supermarkets. I learned that the garden is owned by Mr. Iwakawa, and while he wasn't available for a tour, I enjoyed wandering through the garden and admiring the exotic flora.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

I spent a good hour exploring the garden, taking photos of the vibrant blossoms and the intriguing shapes of the fruits. It felt like stepping into another world, a tropical paradise thriving in the heart of Japan. The garden is meticulously maintained, and it’s clear that a lot of love and care goes into preserving this natural haven. I even spotted a few unfamiliar fruits, their names and origins a mystery to me, adding an element of discovery to the visit.

After my stroll, I stopped at the garden's restaurant for a refreshing treat. I decided on a freshly squeezed papaya juice, which was incredibly sweet and flavorful. I also sampled a few slices of star fruit, which had a unique, slightly tart taste. It was a perfect way to cool down and savor the flavors of the island. I couldn't resist purchasing a small jar of homemade guava jam to take back to Lena in Berlin. I think she'll really enjoy it on her morning toast.

By lunchtime, I was ready for a more substantial meal. I headed to Hachiman, a local restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, with wooden tables and soft lighting. I ordered the local specialty, flying fish set menu. The fish was grilled to perfection, with a delicate, smoky flavor. It was served with a side of rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. The meal was simple but incredibly satisfying, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients that Yakushima is known for. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the delicious food and the warm hospitality.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set off to explore the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive to the lighthouse was scenic, winding through lush forests and along the rugged coastline. As I approached the lighthouse, I was struck by its imposing presence against the backdrop of the vast Pacific Ocean. The white tower stood tall and proud, a beacon of safety and guidance for passing ships. The Yakushima-todai Lighthouse has been watching over the seas since 1897. It was built to guide vessels safely through the waters, and it now serves as a symbol of Yakushima's maritime heritage.

I spent some time exploring the area around the lighthouse, taking in the panoramic views of the coastline and the ocean. The sea breeze was invigorating, and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks was soothing. The vibrant sunsets and dramatic coastal views are truly captivating. The lighthouse is easily accessible, making it a perfect stop for travelers exploring the island. I also enjoyed learning about the history of the lighthouse and its significance to the local community. It's amazing to think about the countless ships that have relied on this beacon over the years.

As evening approached, I made my way to the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant is known for its unique souvenirs, such as Yakusugi wooden chopsticks and objects, and its exquisite specialties, including flying fish ramen, deer tataki, and venison steak. The restaurant had a warm, inviting atmosphere, with local art displayed on the walls. I decided to try the venison steak, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of roasted vegetables. The meat was tender and flavorful, a true culinary delight. The restaurant also offered a variety of local beers and sake, which I sampled with my meal. The service was excellent, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the local cuisine.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Fisherman's Bar NINA, a local spot known for its fresh seafood and relaxed atmosphere. The bar is located near the coast, offering stunning views of the ocean. It's run by chef-owner Nobu-san, a former local fisherman. I ordered a selection of small dishes, including grilled squid, sashimi, and pickled seaweed. The seafood was incredibly fresh, with a delicate, briny flavor. The bar also had a wide selection of local spirits and beers, which I enjoyed while chatting with the friendly locals. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, making it a perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.

As I sipped my drink and listened to the sounds of the ocean, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the tropical fruits of Papaya no Sato to the coastal views of the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse, the day had been a feast for the senses. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and the local culture of Yakushima. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Sandaisugi Cedar and the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center, eager to discover more of this island's hidden gems. I’m also looking forward to trying Kotobuki for lunch and Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan for dinner. And perhaps a visit to Gallery KIANU to pick up some local crafts. I’m also hoping the weather will hold up so I can take some more photographs. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. I really wish Lena was here to experience this with me. Perhaps we can plan a trip back here together sometime.

The forecast for tomorrow is cloudy, with a chance of rain. Temperatures are expected to be between 25°C and 30°C, with high humidity. I’ll make sure to pack my rain gear and be prepared for whatever the day brings. Even with the potential for rain, I’m confident that I’ll have another amazing day exploring Yakushima.

It's moments like these that remind me why I started this blog. Sharing these experiences, even without Lena by my side, feels like bringing a piece of this beautiful world back home to Berlin. And who knows, maybe my stories will inspire others to embark on their own Yakushima adventure. Until tomorrow, safe travels!
