Jade Valleys and Culinary Delights

Today was a delightful blend of natural beauty and authentic Vietnamese flavors. It's days like these that remind me why Lena and I started this travel blog – to share the unique experiences that make a place truly special. We ventured into the heart of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, eager to explore another of its hidden gems, and ended the day with a taste of local life that I know we'll both remember fondly.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at The Villas Restaurant. The restaurant is Phong Nha's most beautiful eating place. I opted for the Bò Né, a flavorful Vietnamese breakfast of beef, egg, pate, and bread. Lena chose a lighter option, a warm potato and artichoke salad. The Villas Restaurant has a dining style that is simple and uncomplicated. Fuelled up for the day, we set off to discover the HaVa Valley - Thung Lũng Ngọc Bich.

The drive to HaVa Valley was an experience in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning karst landscape that defines this region. As we got closer, the air grew fresher, carrying the scent of lush greenery and the promise of adventure. Located in the heart of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Hava Valley has emerged as a promising new destination.

HaVa Valley, also known as Thung Lũng Ngọc Bich, is a stunning tourist destination. The valley is about a 20-minute drive from Phong Nha Town center. The valley is nestled along the legendary Ho Chi Minh West Trail. The towering cliffs intermingle with emerald-green waters, while natural stone formations scatter across the riverbed.

We spent hours exploring HaVa Valley. The valley offers the longest water zipline in Vietnam, measuring 600m. There is also kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the Chay River. We chose to kayak along the Chay River and explore Golden Pebble Bay. I took the opportunity to capture the views with my camera, while Lena enjoyed the cool and fresh water. We took a refreshing swim in the Chay River. The clear water was invigorating, and the surrounding scenery was simply breathtaking.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

By lunchtime, we were both ravenous. We headed to PHONG NHA FAMILY RESTAURANT (NHÀ HÀNG GIA ĐÌNH VIỆT NAM). This charming local eatery is known for its delicious food and friendly staff. Phong Nha Family Restaurant is a fantastic spot for a delicious meal or an affordable drink. I decided on a set menu, while Lena tried the aubergine and tofu with rice, a vegetarian option that came highly recommended. The owner, Vietj, was incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home.

After a satisfying lunch, we took some time to relax and reflect on the morning's adventures. It's moments like these that I cherish the most – sharing good food and good company in a beautiful setting. As a software developer, I often find myself caught up in the digital world, so it's incredibly refreshing to disconnect and immerse myself in nature. Lena, with her graphic design background, always appreciates the aesthetic beauty of our surroundings, and we both find inspiration in the simplicity and authenticity of local life. This is something we can't find in Berlin.

As evening approached, we made our way back to Phong Nha town, eager to experience more of its culinary scene. For dinner, we chose The Rice House. This charming restaurant is renowned for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. With a cozy ambiance and friendly staff, visitors can expect an inviting atmosphere that enhances their dining experience. I opted for a fragrant pho, while Lena chose a savory rice dish. The Rice House prides itself on its commitment to quality and flavor, ensuring that each dish is prepared with care and creativity.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Cây Bàng Quán - Big Tree Restaurant. This charming beer garden is located in the heart of the stunning Phong Nha - Kẻ Bàng National Park. Surrounded by towering trees and rich greenery, visitors can enjoy a serene atmosphere while sipping on a variety of local beers and indulging in delicious Vietnamese cuisine. The rustic decor and open-air seating added to the warm and friendly ambiance. We sat back, enjoyed the cool evening breeze, and savored the taste of local brews. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

From the jade-colored waters of HaVa Valley to the authentic flavors of Vietnamese cuisine, every moment has been a feast for the senses. It's these moments that make our travels so meaningful, and I'm excited to share them with you all.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the heart of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park [see itinerary of tomorrow]. We plan to explore the caves and hike through more of the landscapes. I am sure there are more adventures to be had and more stories to tell.
