A Day of Unexpected Joys
Today in Phong Nha was a delightful mix of planned activities and spontaneous discoveries. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the unexpected turns, the quirky encounters, and the delicious food. Lena and I dove headfirst into the local scene, and it was an absolute blast.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. It's always a pleasure to find vegan options while traveling, and this place did not disappoint. Located with a great view of the river, it was the perfect spot to fuel up for the day. I opted for the vegan plate with scrambled tofu, avocado, and tomato, while Lena enjoyed a bowl of pho. The iced coconut coffee was a must-try, so I made sure to order one. It was the perfect blend of caffeine and sweetness to kickstart our adventures. We even saw some local cows and their calves strolling by, adding to the charm of the morning.

Next on the agenda was the Duck Stop, a place I'd heard so much about. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but the online reviews promised a unique experience, and they were right. It was a bit of a drive from Phong Nha town, but the scenery along the way was worth it. We chose to rent a motorbike for the day, which made the journey both convenient and scenic. The views of Quang Binh province were stunning, with lush greenery and towering karst mountains.

When we arrived at the Duck Stop, we were immediately greeted by a flurry of activity. The place was buzzing with travelers eager to experience the famous duck feeding. We paid the fee, and soon we were swarmed by over a hundred ducks. It was such a bizarre and hilarious feeling to have these feathered creatures waddling all over our feet. Lena couldn't stop laughing as they tickled her legs with their wet, webbed feet. I must admit, it was quite ticklish for me too, but I couldn't help but grin at the sheer absurdity of it all.
It's not every day you get a duck massage, but in Phong Nha, it's an experience you won't want to miss.
After the duck feeding frenzy, we decided to try the famous duck massage. Trained ducks waddle across your legs, providing a ticklish yet strangely relaxing sensation. It was definitely a quirky experience, and one I won't soon forget. We also took the opportunity to ride a buffalo named Donald Trump, which was another highlight of the visit. The Duck Stop is more than just a tourist attraction; it's a glimpse into rural Vietnamese life, and I appreciated the chance to connect with the local culture. The owner, Tran Van Quynh, has created a truly unique and playful experience that's perfect for families, couples, and adventurous backpackers alike.
Before leaving the Duck Stop, we indulged in some delicious bánh xèo, Vietnamese pancakes. I opted for the pork and shrimp version, while Lena enjoyed the vegetarian option. The pancakes were crispy and flavorful, and they were the perfect way to end our visit to the farm.
For lunch, we headed to ARTIST'S ZONE, a Vietnamese eatery known for its inviting ambiance and friendly staff. The menu offered a variety of options, but we decided to try the Bun Cha, which was said to be one of the best in the country. It was a delicious combination of grilled pork, noodles, and fresh herbs, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The owner was incredibly kind and even went out of their way to make us kumquat juice, which was a refreshing treat.

In the late afternoon, we stopped by Đặc sản, cafe Hương Rừng, a local shop offering regional specialties and coffee. It was a great place to pick up some souvenirs and sample local flavors. I bought some local coffee beans to bring back to Berlin, and Lena found some unique handicrafts to decorate our apartment.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Phong Nha Rooftop Bar for dinner. The bar offered breathtaking views of the surrounding limestone mountains, and it was the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day. We enjoyed some refreshing cocktails and shared a few appetizers while watching the sunset paint the sky with vibrant colors. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and it was a great way to end our day in Phong Nha.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. We're looking forward to visiting some of the famous caves and hiking through the lush tropical forests. I'm particularly excited to see Phong Nha Ke Bang, and capture some stunning photographs. I've heard it's a must-see destination, and I can't wait to experience its beauty firsthand.
Reflecting on today, I'm grateful for the unexpected joys and quirky encounters that made it so memorable. From the duck massage to the vegan feasts, Phong Nha has a way of surprising and delighting at every turn. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about embracing new experiences and connecting with local cultures.
