Today in Marrakech was a journey through time, a sensory feast that blended the grandeur of historical palaces with the tranquility of hidden gardens. With my friends by my side, I delved into the heart of this vibrant city, seeking to understand its soul through its architecture, cuisine, and hidden oases. It was a day of discovery, one that left me with a deeper appreciation for the layers of history and culture that make Marrakech so unique.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Le Jardin Restaurant Marrakech Medina. Stepping into this restaurant felt like entering a secret garden, a lush, green courtyard hidden away from the bustling Medina. The aroma of mint tea and freshly baked bread filled the air, and the atmosphere was instantly calming. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen (pancakes) with honey and amlou (a spread made from almonds, argan oil, and honey). It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

First on our itinerary was the Bahia Palace. As a software developer with a keen interest in history, I was eager to see this 19th-century palace, known for its intricate architecture and stunning courtyards. The palace was built by Grand Vizier Ba Ahmed ben Moussa for his favorite wife, Bahia, meaning brilliance. The name seemed fitting as we wandered through the opulent rooms and serene gardens.

The Bahia Palace is a sprawling complex of riads, courtyards and gardens. Although the rooms are now mostly empty, the stunning craftsmanship of the ceilings and walls still shines through. It’s a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the time, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Moroccan elite.

The play of light and shadow in the courtyards was particularly captivating. The zellij tilework, with its intricate geometric patterns, and the carved stucco plasterwork were a feast for the eyes. I found myself imagining the palace in its heyday, filled with the sounds of music, laughter, and the murmur of courtly life.

Next, we ventured to the Saadian Tombs. This historical site, dating back to the Saadian dynasty, was hidden for centuries behind walls, only to be rediscovered in 1917. The tombs serve as a final resting place for members of the Saadian dynasty, including Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur.

The Saadian Tombs offer a stark contrast to the grandeur of the Bahia Palace. Here, the atmosphere is more solemn, a space for reflection and remembrance. The architecture, however, is no less impressive. The main mausoleum, with its Hall of Twelve Columns, showcases exquisite craftsmanship with Carrara marble from Italy and cedar wood. The intricate carvings and the play of light filtering through the delicate stucco work created an atmosphere of serene beauty. It's amazing to think that this place was hidden from the world for so long.

After immersing ourselves in history, we sought refuge in the Le Jardin Secret. This hidden oasis in the heart of the Medina is a true gem. As we stepped through the unassuming entrance, we were transported to a world of tranquility and beauty. The garden is divided into two parts: an exotic garden and an Islamic garden, each offering a unique atmosphere.

The Islamic garden, with its symmetrical layout and water features, reflects the traditional Moroccan garden design. The sound of trickling water from the fountains created a calming ambiance, a welcome respite from the bustling streets outside. The exotic garden, on the other hand, was a riot of colors and textures, with plants from around the world thriving in the Moroccan climate.

I particularly enjoyed climbing the tower in Le Jardin Secret. From the top, we were treated to panoramic views of Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains in the distance. It was a perfect spot to take in the beauty of the city and appreciate the contrast between the lush gardens and the surrounding rooftops.

For lunch, we indulged in a feast at Al Fassia Guéliz, known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine and all-female staff. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the service was impeccable. We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, each bursting with fresh flavors and vibrant colors. For the main course, I opted for the lamb tagine with prunes and almonds, a classic Moroccan dish that was cooked to perfection. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the sweetness of the prunes and almonds added a delightful complexity to the dish.

As someone who appreciates a good beer, I was pleased to see that Al Fassia offered a selection of local wines and refreshing beverages. The Royal mojito was a must-try cocktail. It was the perfect accompaniment to our meal, adding a touch of festivity to our lunch.

In the evening, we decided to experience Marrakech's vibrant nightlife at the Churchill Bar located in La Mamounia. This iconic bar, named after Winston Churchill, exudes an air of sophistication and old-world charm. The dim lighting, plush seating, and live jazz music created an intimate and inviting atmosphere.

I ordered a classic cocktail and savored the moment, surrounded by my friends and the sounds of the city. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. The Churchill Bar is known for its extensive selection of drinks and its impeccable service, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

For dinner, we ventured to Pepe Nero, a restaurant that blends Italian and Moroccan cuisines. The restaurant is set in a beautiful riad with a romantic courtyard, creating an enchanting atmosphere. I opted for the lamb shoulder, which was slow-cooked to perfection and melt-in-your-mouth tender. My friends tried the pasta dishes, which were equally delicious. Pepe Nero is known for its high-quality ingredients and innovative dishes, making it a culinary highlight of our trip.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the incredible diversity of Marrakech. From the grandeur of the Bahia Palace to the tranquility of Le Jardin Secret, from the traditional Moroccan cuisine at Al Fassia to the innovative dishes at Pepe Nero, this city offers a sensory feast that is sure to delight any traveler. The warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people made our experience even more special, leaving me with a longing to return and explore more of this enchanting country.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Jardin Majorelle and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. I am particularly excited about seeing the Jardin Majorelle, as I have heard so much about its vibrant colors and exotic plants. I am also looking forward to learning more about the life and work of Yves Saint Laurent, a fashion icon who found inspiration in Marrakech. After that, we are planning on doing some shopping at 33 RUE MAJORELLE.

Before concluding this blog post, I must not forget to mention that I have been seeing events being held in Marrakech. There is the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative Regional Roundtable on Sustainable Finance for Africa and the Middle East in early May 2025, and the PFA Spring Event 2025 from May 14-15, 2025.
