A Day of Discovery and Delight

Today was another fantastic day of exploration here in Marrakech. With Lena and the others, I set out to immerse myself in the city's rich history and vibrant culture. From the ruins of a once-grand palace to the intricate displays of Moroccan artistry, and finally, a relaxing evening with panoramic views, today was a testament to the beauty and depth of this incredible city.

Our day began, as usual, with a hearty breakfast at Simple Restaurant Marrakech. It's becoming our go-to spot for a reliable start to the day, fueling us up for whatever adventures lie ahead. The fresh pastries and strong coffee were exactly what we needed before venturing out into the bustling streets.

Our first stop was the El Badi Palace. The palace was built in the late 16th century by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur to commemorate the victory over the Portuguese in the Battle of the Three Kings in 1578. I've read that the name “Badi” means “The Incomparable,” which reflects the Sultan's ambition to create a palace unlike any other. I was excited to see what was left of it.

As we walked through what remains of the palace, I couldn't help but imagine its former glory. Although much of it lies in ruins, the sheer scale of the courtyard and the remnants of the walls hinted at the opulence that once was. I learned that it once boasted 360 rooms adorned with the finest materials from around the world, including Italian marble and gold leaf from Sudan. It's fascinating to think that this palace was once the center of political and cultural life in Marrakech.

What struck me most was the contrast between the grandeur of the past and the quiet desolation of the present. The storks nesting atop the walls added a touch of life to the scene, a reminder that even in ruins, life finds a way.

Next on our itinerary was the Dar Si Said Museum, also known as the Museum of Moroccan Arts and Crafts. I was particularly looking forward to this, as I'm always keen to explore local artistry and craftsmanship. The museum is housed in a 19th-century palace built by Si Said Ben Moussa, who served as minister of war under his brother. The building itself is a testament to Moroccan art and architecture, showcasing intricate woodwork, stunning zellij tilework, and expansive Andalusian-style gardens.

Inside, the museum was a treasure trove of Moroccan artistry. The detailed cedar wood carvings and painted ceilings were also remarkable, reflecting the skill and artistry of Moroccan artisans. I learned that the museum was transformed in the early 20th century to preserve and showcase Moroccan craftsmanship, and it certainly lives up to that mission.

After immersing ourselves in art and history, it was time for lunch. We headed to Le Douar, a restaurant recommended by a local we met in the souk. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Medina, Le Douar offered a welcome respite from the bustling streets. The rooftop setting provided a lovely view of the city, and the traditional Moroccan cuisine was a delight.

Lena opted for the tagine, while I decided to try the couscous. Both dishes were flavorful and satisfying, and the mint tea was the perfect complement to our meal. It was a great spot to relax and recharge before continuing our exploration. I noticed that the restaurant had a rating of 4.3 on Google, which is pretty good and reflective of our experience.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Le Salama Sky-bar for dinner and drinks. This rooftop bar is known for its panoramic views of Marrakech, and it certainly didn't disappoint. The atmosphere was lively and vibrant, with music playing and people enjoying the evening air. The sky was painted with hues of orange and pink, providing a stunning backdrop to the city below.

We ordered a selection of Moroccan dishes and cocktails, settling in to enjoy the view and the company. Le Salama is known for its belly dancing shows, which added to the lively atmosphere. The combination of great music, delicious food, and a vibrant ambiance made for a memorable evening. I had read mixed reviews about the food, but we found it to be quite good, especially the tagine and the grilled meats.

Before heading back to La Mamounia, we took a moment to reflect on the day. From the historical grandeur of El Badi Palace to the artistic richness of Dar Si Said Museum and the vibrant nightlife at Le Salama Sky-bar, today was a perfect blend of culture, history, and relaxation. Marrakech continues to surprise and delight me at every turn, and I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.
