Day 5: Desert Dreams and Moroccan Nights: Agafay Adventures
Journey through Marrakech's Agafay Desert, shop vibrant Souk Zrabi carpets, and experience a magical evening at Chez Ali's Fantasia.
A Day of Sands, Souks, and Spectacles
Today was a whirlwind of Moroccan experiences, a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and dazzling entertainment. From the serene expanse of the Agafay Desert, to the bustling alleys of Souk Zrabi and the captivating Fantasia show at Chez Ali, Marrakech continued to surprise and enchant. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to step outside my comfort zone and embrace the unknown.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Henna Café. I opted for the lentil soup based on online reviews, and it did not disappoint. It was the perfect fuel for the day’s adventures, and the rooftop setting offered a tranquil escape from the city's morning bustle. Lena enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea, which she claimed was the best she’d had so far. We appreciated the café's commitment to using natural henna and supporting local artists, a cause close to our hearts back in Berlin, where we often frequent similar establishments.
After breakfast, we met our driver for the excursion to the Agafay Desert. Leaving Marrakech behind, the landscape gradually transformed from urban sprawl to arid plains dotted with olive groves. As we approached the desert, the terrain became rockier, resembling a lunar landscape more than the stereotypical sand dunes I had imagined. The Agafay Desert, I learned, is known for its rolling hills and stony ground, offering a unique and less touristy desert experience. I had packed my camera, eager to capture the stark beauty of the landscape, and Lena made sure we both were slathered in sunscreen.

Our first activity in the Agafay was a camel trek. While I initially felt a bit awkward perched atop the camel, the gentle sway soon became soothing. The views were stunning, stretching across the vast expanse of the desert towards the distant Atlas Mountains. The silence was broken only by the soft padding of the camel’s feet and the occasional call of our Berber guide. He shared stories of nomadic life and pointed out various desert plants, explaining their traditional uses. Lena, always fascinated by local customs, peppered him with questions about Berber culture and traditions. I tried to capture the moment with my camera, hoping to convey the sense of peace and timelessness that enveloped us.
The desert is a vast and silent canvas, where the sun paints ever-changing masterpieces.
Next up was quad biking. I admit, I was a bit hesitant at first. I'm more of a leisurely cyclist than an adrenaline junkie, but Lena encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. After a brief safety lesson, we donned helmets and goggles and set off across the rocky terrain. The quad bike roared to life, and I gripped the handlebars tightly, navigating the winding trails with a mix of excitement and trepidation. Lena, on the other hand, was a natural, zipping ahead with a whoop of delight. I gradually gained confidence, enjoying the thrill of speeding across the desert landscape. We paused at a scenic overlook, where the guide brewed mint tea over a small fire. Sipping the sweet, fragrant tea while gazing at the panoramic views was the perfect way to catch our breath and appreciate the beauty of the Agafay Desert.
Lunch was at La Table Ocre, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. We shared a tagine and some Moroccan salads. The tagine was flavorful and aromatic, a testament to the slow-cooking process that allows the spices to meld together perfectly. Lena particularly enjoyed the Moroccan Harira soup, while I favored the beef tagine with dried fruits. Refueled and refreshed, we headed back to Marrakech in the late afternoon.

Our next stop was Souk Zrabi, the carpet souk. The moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in a riot of colors and textures. Carpets of all shapes, sizes, and designs hung from the walls and lay piled on the floor. Vendors eagerly approached us, each claiming to have the finest carpets in Marrakech. I was initially overwhelmed by the sheer variety, but Lena, with her keen eye for design, quickly zeroed in on a few that caught her attention. We spent a couple of hours wandering through the souk, admiring the intricate patterns and learning about the different weaving techniques. The vendors were eager to share the stories behind their carpets, explaining the symbolism of the various motifs and dyes used. While the souk was once used for slave trading, it now stands as one of Marrakech's premier markets. Despite my pragmatic nature, I found myself drawn into the artistry and history woven into each rug. We finally settled on a beautiful Berber carpet with vibrant colors and intricate geometric designs. Haggling over the price was an experience in itself, a dance of offers and counteroffers that eventually led to a mutually agreeable price. We made sure to remember a light jacket, as I had forgotten it on a previous trip, and the evenings can get cool.

The highlight of the day was dinner at Chez Ali, a restaurant famous for its Fantasia show. As we entered the complex, we were transported to a world of Arabian Nights. Berber tents were scattered throughout the grounds, each adorned with colorful cushions and intricate carpets. Musicians played traditional Moroccan music, and dancers in elaborate costumes twirled and swayed to the rhythm. We were led to our tent, where we were served a lavish Moroccan feast. The meal included a variety of salads, tagines, and couscous, all cooked to perfection. As we ate, different folklore troupes paraded through the tents, showcasing the diverse cultures of Morocco. There were Gnaoua musicians, belly dancers, and acrobats, each performance more captivating than the last.

After dinner, we gathered in the main arena for the Fantasia show. The spectacle began with a procession of horsemen in traditional garb, each brandishing a rifle. They charged across the arena at full speed, firing their rifles into the air in a synchronized display of horsemanship and marksmanship. Acrobats performed daring feats on horseback, and belly dancers mesmerized the audience with their graceful movements. The finale was a breathtaking display of pyrotechnics, with fireworks illuminating the night sky. The whole experience was a sensory overload, a vibrant celebration of Moroccan culture and heritage. Lena was particularly enthralled, her eyes wide with wonder. I, too, was impressed by the spectacle, a far cry from the quiet evenings we usually spend in our Berlin apartment.
As we drove back to La Mamounia, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the serene beauty of the Agafay Desert to the vibrant chaos of Souk Zrabi and the dazzling spectacle of Chez Ali, Marrakech had once again exceeded my expectations. It was a day of contrasts, a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about experiencing new cultures and stepping outside one's comfort zone. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Marrakech Museum and Madrasa Ben Youssef. I’m looking forward to delving deeper into the city's history and architecture.
