A Warm Tuscan Welcome

After a smooth journey from Berlin to Florence and then onwards to San Gimignano, I was eager to dive headfirst into the medieval charm that this Tuscan town promised. My first day was a blend of historical exploration, architectural appreciation, and, of course, indulging in the local cuisine. I couldn't wait to share my adventures with you all!

The July sun was already high as I stepped out of the Hotel Bel Soggiorno, ready to explore. The weather was just as I'd hoped – warm with a gentle breeze, perfect for wandering through cobblestone streets. I was especially glad I packed my lightweight clothing; even though I forgot my umbrella, the forecast promised clear skies for most of my trip.

My first stop was the heart of San Gimignano: Piazza del Duomo. The square was already bustling with activity. The Duomo, or Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, stood majestically at the top of a wide staircase. Its travertine facade, simple yet imposing, spoke of centuries of history. I took my time admiring the Romanesque architecture and the central rose window. Piazza del Duomo has been the center of the town's religious and political life since the 11th century.

As I climbed the steps to enter the Duomo, I couldn't help but marvel at the fact that this very spot had been the epicenter of San Gimignano's prosperity during the 13th century. Inside, the church was a treasure trove of art. The walls were covered in frescoes depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments, painted by renowned 14th-century Sienese artists. The vibrant colors and detailed storytelling transported me back in time. I spent a good hour wandering through the basilica, admiring the artwork and soaking in the spiritual atmosphere.

The beauty of San Gimignano lies not just in its towers and architecture, but in the way it preserves and shares its rich history with every visitor.

Leaving Piazza del Duomo, I made my way towards Torre dei Cugnanesi. This ancient tower, located between Via San Giovanni and Via del Quercecchio, is one of the oldest and tallest in San Gimignano. Dating back to the 13th century, it stands as a proud reminder of the town's medieval past. As I stood beneath it, I imagined what life must have been like when the Cugnanesi family used this tower as part of their defensive stronghold. It's fascinating to think that this tower is the only one built outside the town's first set of walls.

The tower is located close to Arco dei Becci, and together with Palazzo dei Cugnanesi, formed one of San Gimignano's defensive buildings in ancient times. I noticed the corbels that support the gallery on the stone facade, and around the back, I spotted a bastion that was part of the town's first wall. The Torre dei Cugnanesi offered a glimpse into the architectural and defensive strategies of the time.

Next on my list was SanGimignano1300, a museum that promised a unique perspective on the town's history. Tucked away on Via Costarella, the museum turned out to be an incredible experience. Inside, I discovered a detailed ceramic reconstruction of San Gimignano as it appeared in the 14th century. The miniature city was a masterpiece, complete with 800 buildings and 72 towers, all meticulously crafted by hand.

The museum brought the history of San Gimignano to life. I learned about the town's architecture, social structure, and daily life in the Middle Ages. The attention to detail was astounding, and I spent a long time admiring the craftsmanship. It's amazing to think that two artists, Michelangelo and Raffaello Rubino, along with a team of artisans and historians, recreated San Gimignano as it once existed!

After immersing myself in history, it was time for a late lunch. Perucà, a charming restaurant I had read about, was the perfect spot. I savored authentic Tuscan flavors, enjoying a delicious pasta dish with a glass of local Vernaccia wine. The restaurant's cozy ambiance and friendly service made the meal even more enjoyable. I took a moment to journal about my morning while enjoying a refreshing glass of water.

With my stomach full and my spirits high, I decided to indulge in some local shopping. My first stop was a Truffle Boutique, a delightful shop dedicated to all things truffle. As someone who enjoys culinary arts, I was eager to explore the world of truffles. The shop offered a wide range of truffle products, from fresh truffles to truffle-infused oils, sauces, and pastes. I learned about the different types of truffles and their uses in Tuscan cuisine.

I couldn't resist buying a small jar of truffle paste to take back home to Berlin. It will be a delicious reminder of my time in San Gimignano. The shop assistant told me about truffle hunting experiences in the surrounding woods, which sounded like an unforgettable adventure. Maybe I'll try that next time! It was started by Marco Moroni, and is a family business dedicated to finding truffles in Tuscany.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn to Bar La Cisterna, a typical Italian bar in the heart of San Gimignano. Located in Piazza della Cisterna, the bar offered a perfect spot to relax and soak in the atmosphere. I ordered an Aperol Spritz and watched as locals and tourists mingled in the square. The bar is known for using local ingredients to create its dishes, and the goal has always been customer satisfaction.

Piazza della Cisterna itself is a beautiful space, and I took some time to admire the well that gives the piazza its name. I found out that Hotel La Cisterna is also in the piazza, and offers restaurant and bar service on the tables outside in the piazza! It was the perfect way to end my first day in San Gimignano, with a refreshing drink and a view of the medieval towers against the twilight sky.

Dinner was at Cum Quibus - Ristorante Toscano, a restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine. I indulged in a hearty meal of Florentine steak, cooked to perfection and served with roasted vegetables. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a true taste of Tuscany. As I savored each bite, I reflected on the day's adventures. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

As I walked back to Hotel Bel Soggiorno, the streets of San Gimignano were quiet and peaceful. The towers stood tall and majestic against the night sky, casting long shadows across the cobblestone streets. I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful town. It was a day filled with history, art, culture, and delicious food, a perfect introduction to the medieval charm of San Gimignano.

Back at the hotel, I spent some time writing in my travel journal, capturing the highlights of the day. I also reviewed my photos, eager to share them with Mei and Lina back home. I miss them terribly, but I know they would want me to make the most of this solo adventure. I made sure to call them before bed to tell them all about my day.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of San Gimignano's hidden gems. My itinerary includes visits to Torre dei Becci, the Museum of Torture, and Piazza della Cisterna. I'm also planning to visit Beconcini Tuscan Handmade, a shop known for its local crafts, and Divinorum Wine Bar for a taste of Tuscan wine. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. San Gimignano has already captured my heart, and I'm eager to discover more of its secrets. Goodnight from Tuscany!
