A Day of Discoveries in the Dades Valley
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the natural beauty and authentic culture of the Dades Valley. We ventured off the beaten path, seeking out hidden cascades, challenging hikes, and genuine interactions with the local Berber community. It was a day filled with unexpected delights and unforgettable moments, a true highlight of our Moroccan adventure.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant zinyou sud. Mei, Lina, and I enjoyed traditional Moroccan pancakes and mint tea, fueling up for the day’s adventures. The simple, honest flavors were a perfect start, setting the tone for a day of authentic experiences. The warmth of the staff made us feel welcome, and Lina was particularly taken with their friendly smiles. It's these small, personal touches that really make a place memorable.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to find the Cascade, a hidden waterfall tucked away in the Dades Valley. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads offering stunning panoramic views of the valley. The landscape was dramatic, with towering rock formations and lush green fields contrasting against the arid mountains. September brings a unique charm to the valley; the summer heat has subsided slightly, making it perfect for outdoor activities, and the harvest season is in full swing, adding vibrant colors to the scenery.

The hike to the Cascade was more challenging than we anticipated, but well worth the effort. The trail was rocky and uneven, requiring careful footing, but the stunning views kept us motivated. Lina, ever the curious explorer, was fascinated by the local flora and fauna, pointing out colorful birds and unusual plants along the way. The sound of rushing water grew louder as we approached the Cascade, and soon we were rewarded with the sight of a beautiful waterfall cascading down the rocks. The cool mist was refreshing, and we spent some time relaxing by the water, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere.
The beauty of the Dades Valley lies not only in its stunning landscapes but also in the warmth and hospitality of its Berber people.
Next on our itinerary was Hiking With Abdo: Journeying through Nature's Wonders. We met Abdo, a local Berber guide, who shared his extensive knowledge of the Dades Valley's history, culture, and natural environment. Abdo led us on a fascinating trek through the valley, pointing out ancient kasbahs and sharing stories of the Berber people. His passion for his homeland was infectious, and we learned so much about the unique way of life in this region. I made sure to take lots of photos, capturing the vibrant colors and unique rock formations of the Dades Gorge.

Lina was particularly intrigued by the “Monkey Fingers,” unusual rocky outcrops that Abdo explained were formed over millions of years. She loved scrambling over the rocks and exploring the caves, her imagination running wild with tales of ancient Berber tribes and hidden treasures. Mei and I appreciated the opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the local culture, a welcome break from our busy lives in Berlin.
For lunch, we stopped at Riad Restaurant Pizzeria Marhaba. After a morning of hiking, we were all hungry, and the restaurant's menu offered a variety of options to satisfy our appetites. Mei opted for a traditional tagine, while Lina couldn't resist the pizza. I decided to try the local Berber specialty, a hearty stew with meat and vegetables. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel like part of their family.

After lunch, we visited Queen Shop By Ami, a local shop selling traditional Berber crafts and souvenirs. Mei and Lina spent ages browsing the colorful textiles, jewelry, and pottery, while I chatted with Ami, the shop owner, about his life in the Dades Valley. Ami was a warm and engaging man, eager to share his culture with us. We purchased several beautiful items as mementos of our trip, supporting the local economy and taking home a piece of the Dades Valley with us.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to La Porte du Dades for dinner. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with a traditional Berber design and a cozy atmosphere. We sat on the rooftop terrace, enjoying panoramic views of the valley as the sun set. The food was excellent, a fusion of Moroccan and French cuisine. The service was attentive and friendly, making us feel pampered and relaxed. It was the perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery.

“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” – Gustave Flaubert
As I reflect on today's experiences, I am struck by the beauty and resilience of the Dades Valley and its people. Despite the harsh environment, the Berber community has thrived here for centuries, preserving their unique culture and traditions. Their warmth, hospitality, and connection to the land are truly inspiring. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced a small part of their world and to have shared it with my family.
Tomorrow, we plan to continue our exploration of the Dades Valley, visiting the Official Tour Guide Gorge Dades and embarking on a new trekking adventure with DADES TREKKING. We'll start the day with breakfast at Hôtel - Restaurant BOUGAFER, followed by lunch at Café Restaurant AIT SEDRAT, and end with dinner at Restaurant Chez Aïcha Timlalt. We might even stop by Café Achaf for a refreshing drink [if it's open]. I am excited to see what new discoveries await us and to continue immersing ourselves in the beauty and culture of this remarkable region. As our trip nears its end, I am already cherishing the memories we have made and looking forward to sharing them with you all on Evendo.
