Solo Journey Through Morocco's Imlil Region
Day 9: Agafay Desert Dreams and Berber Hospitality in Imlil
Discover the stark beauty of Agafay Desert and the warm Berber culture in Imlil. A day of contrasts, flavors, and unforgettable moments.
Desert Mirage and Mountain Majesty
Today was a day of striking contrasts, a sensory rollercoaster that took me from the arid expanse of the Agafay Desert to the vibrant heart of Imlil. It’s amazing how much a single day can hold when you’re open to the unexpected, and today was a perfect example of that. From quad biking across rocky terrain to savoring traditional Berber cuisine, every moment was a new discovery.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Terrase d'Imlil. The terrace lived up to its name, offering a panoramic view of the valley as the sun began to paint the mountains in hues of gold and rose. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of bread, local honey, and strong coffee, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. It's funny, I remember when Lina was little, she would only eat pancakes with honey. I wonder if she'd like the honey here. It's so fresh and natural.

With my stomach full and my spirit high, I set off to La Rosa Agafay. The drive itself was an experience, the landscape gradually transforming from lush greenery to a stark, rocky terrain. The Agafay Desert isn't your typical sand dune desert; it's a stone desert, a vast expanse of undulating hills and dry riverbeds. Some may find it disappointing if they're expecting the Sahara, but I found its raw, almost lunar beauty incredibly captivating.

At La Rosa Agafay, I hopped on a quad bike and tore across the landscape. The adrenaline rush was exhilarating as I navigated the rocky paths, the wind whipping through my hair. It was a stark contrast to the peaceful serenity of Imlil, but that’s exactly what I was looking for – a bit of adventure to spice things up. I didn't see any camels, but I imagine that would have been fun as well.
Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are the ones that take you by surprise, the unexpected detours that lead to hidden gems.
After the adrenaline-fueled quad biking, I headed back to Imlil, ready for a change of pace. I decided to do a little shopping at Simply Moroccan. I was looking for some authentic souvenirs to bring back to Mei and Lina. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, from intricately woven carpets to hand-painted ceramics. I picked up a beautiful tagine pot for Mei, knowing she’d appreciate the craftsmanship, and a small, colorful rug for Lina to brighten up her room. I remember when I first moved to Berlin, Mei helped make our apartment feel like home. It's funny how a simple rug can transform a space.

Lunch was at Git Le Toubkal. I had heard great things about their Berber omelette, and it did not disappoint. The rooftop setting offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains, making the meal even more enjoyable. The omelette was flavorful and filling, the perfect fuel for an afternoon of exploring. I was thinking about the trek I'm planning for tomorrow, and the fuel will come in handy.

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn to the local culture. I spent some time simply wandering through the village, observing the daily life of the Berber people. Their warmth and hospitality were evident in every interaction, from the friendly greetings to the shared smiles. I thought about taking a cooking class, but decided to just try the local cuisine instead.
Dinner was at Happy Family House. The name itself was inviting, and the experience lived up to the promise. I enjoyed a delicious tagine, slow-cooked to perfection, while chatting with the owner about his family and their life in Imlil. He shared stories of his childhood, of growing up in the mountains and learning the traditions of his ancestors. It was a reminder of the importance of family and community, values that resonate deeply with me.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the incredible contrasts I had experienced. From the stark beauty of the Agafay Desert to the lush greenery of Imlil, from the adrenaline rush of quad biking to the peaceful serenity of Berber hospitality, it was a day that had touched all my senses. It's these kinds of experiences that make travel so rewarding, the opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and discover something new about the world, and about yourself.
Tomorrow, I’m planning to embark on a trek with Imlil Trekking Company. I’m excited to explore the mountains further, to challenge myself physically and mentally, and to immerse myself even deeper in the Berber culture. I'll start the day with breakfast at Riad Jnane Imlil , followed by lunch at Restaurant Cascade Ait Misan. In the evening, I plan to unwind at Kasbah Imlil. I am looking forward to it, but for now, I need some rest. This old body isn't as young as it once was.
The Imlil Region in June is characterized by warm and pleasant weather, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Expect daytime highs around 26°C (89°F) and cooler nights with temperatures around 13°C (58°F). Rainfall is low, with only a small chance of precipitation. The days are long and sunny, perfect for exploring the mountains and valleys.
As I settle in for the night, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. I am also grateful for Mei and Lina. I am lucky to have them in my life. I am also grateful for the opportunity to travel and explore this beautiful world. I am looking forward to tomorrow, to new adventures and new discoveries. But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge, to dream of desert mirages and mountain majesty.
