Solo Journey Through Morocco's Imlil Region
Day 5: Chasing Reflections: A Day at Lac Ifni
Discover the serene beauty of Lac Ifni in the High Atlas Mountains. A solo hike, Berber culture, and breathtaking views await!
Finding Serenity at Lac Ifni
Today, I ventured into the heart of the High Atlas Mountains to discover the tranquil beauty of Lac Ifni. It was a day filled with breathtaking landscapes, unexpected encounters, and moments of quiet reflection. Leaving the familiar streets of Imlil behind, I set out on a solo journey to experience the raw and untouched nature of Morocco, hoping to capture the essence of its serene beauty.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Targa Imoula Imlil. The mountain air was crisp, and the promise of a beautiful day hung in the balance as I enjoyed a traditional Berber breakfast. It was a simple meal, but the warmth of the hospitality and the stunning views from the terrace made it a perfect start to my adventure. I remember Mei preparing similar breakfasts back in Berlin, though perhaps without the panoramic views of the High Atlas. The friendly staff were very helpful, and I was able to store some of my gear at Targa Imoula while venturing out, which was highly appreciated.
Before embarking on my hike, I made a quick stop at Imlil Bike Shop to inquire about renting a mountain bike for a different adventure another day. Though I didn't rent a bike today, the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and provided valuable insights into the local trails and routes. Cycling through the Atlas Mountains is definitely something I want to explore further during this trip. It reminded me of the cycling trips Lina and I take along the Spree River in Berlin, though I imagine the Moroccan terrain offers a slightly different challenge!
With my backpack packed and my hiking boots laced, I set off towards Lac Ifni. The trail began in a lush green valley dotted with small Berber villages. The path was well-trodden, and I found myself surrounded by the stunning beauty of the Toubkal National Park. The air was filled with the sounds of nature – birds chirping, the gentle rush of mountain streams, and the rustling of leaves in the breeze. It was a welcome change from the urban soundscape of Berlin.
As I ascended, the landscape transformed. The green valleys gave way to rocky terrain, and the air grew thinner. The sun beat down on me, but the breathtaking views kept me motivated. I passed local Berber people herding goats and sheep, their faces weathered by the sun and wind. Their warm smiles and friendly greetings were a reminder of the welcoming nature of the Moroccan people. I even managed to exchange a few words in my limited Arabic, a skill I've been trying to improve since moving to Berlin.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand achievements, but in the quiet moments of connection with nature and culture.
After a few hours of hiking, I reached the pass located at 2,300 meters. From here, I was rewarded with a panoramic view of Jbel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The sight was truly awe-inspiring. The snow-capped mountain stood majestically against the clear blue sky, its reflection shimmering in the distance. I took a moment to catch my breath and soak in the beauty of the landscape. It was a view that would stay with me long after I left Morocco.
The descent to Lac Ifni was steep and rocky, but the anticipation of seeing the lake kept me going. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I caught my first glimpse of the water. Nestled at the bottom of a valley, surrounded by the peaks of Jbel Toubkal, Ouanoukrim, and the dome of Ifni, Lac Ifni was a sight to behold. The lake's dark turquoise waters reflected the surrounding mountains, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. The sheer scale of the landscape was humbling, and I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me.
I spent the afternoon exploring the shores of the lake. The water was cold, but I couldn't resist taking a quick dip. The feeling of the icy water against my skin was invigorating, and I emerged feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I found a flat area on the west side of the lake and enjoyed a simple picnic lunch, savoring the flavors of local bread, cheese, and olives. It was a moment of pure bliss, surrounded by the beauty of nature.
For lunch, I enjoyed a meal at La table de tigmi Ait Mizane. The restaurant is known for its delectable couscous and warm hospitality. I opted for the tagine, a traditional Moroccan dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and complex, and the presentation was beautiful. The staff were incredibly friendly and made me feel right at home. They even translated the whole menu in English for me.

As the sun began to set, I started my descent back to Imlil. The sky was ablaze with color, and the mountains were cast in a warm golden light. The hike down was challenging, but the memories of the day kept me going. I arrived back in Imlil feeling tired but fulfilled. It was a day that I would never forget.
For dinner, I enjoyed a meal at Auberge Atlas Tamatertt. The auberge offered stunning views of the mountains, and the food was simple but delicious. I enjoyed a hearty Berber soup and a tagine, savoring the flavors of Moroccan cuisine. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

As I reflect on my day at Lac Ifni, I am reminded of the importance of taking time to connect with nature. In our busy lives, it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But by venturing out into the wilderness, we can reconnect with our inner selves and find peace and tranquility. Lac Ifni was a reminder of the beauty and power of nature, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced it.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Cascades gelées d'IGHOULIDNE, and perhaps unwind at the Imlil Lodge. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure in this beautiful country.
