A Day Among Giants

Today was a day of reaching new heights, both literally and figuratively, here in the Imlil Region. I set out to explore the majestic landscapes and immerse myself in the local Berber culture. From conquering the trails of Biguinoussene to savoring traditional Moroccan cuisine and discovering exquisite carpets, it was a day filled with unforgettable experiences. As a solo traveler, I find these moments of connection with nature and local culture incredibly enriching.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at the Authentic Toubkal Lodge Restaurant. The spread was impressive, featuring local breads, fresh fruits, and strong Moroccan coffee. Fuelled up, I was ready to tackle the trails of Biguinoussene. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from Berlin's city smog, and the sun was just beginning to peek over the High Atlas Mountains. I made sure to apply a generous layer of sunscreen, remembering how easily I can get sunburnt, a lesson learned from many previous adventures. The weather in Imlil in June is generally perfect for hiking, with daytime highs around 26°C and cooler nights.

The hike to Biguinoussene was challenging but incredibly rewarding. As I ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The trails zigzagged through valleys and climbed steadily upwards, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. It was a solitary journey, allowing me to reflect on my life back in Berlin and the simple pleasures of travel. Reaching the summit of Biguinoussene was an exhilarating experience. Standing at the top, surrounded by the vastness of the Atlas Mountains, I felt a sense of accomplishment and awe. The world stretched out before me, an endless expanse of peaks and valleys. I took a moment to simply breathe, soaking in the tranquility and grandeur of the landscape. It was a far cry from my usual days spent troubleshooting IT issues in a Berlin office, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to disconnect and reconnect with nature.

After descending from Biguinoussene, I made my way to the Moroccan carpets cooperative in Imlil. I was eager to learn more about this traditional craft and perhaps find a unique souvenir to bring home. The cooperative was a vibrant hub of activity, with artisans weaving intricate patterns on looms and displaying their colorful creations. I was immediately drawn to the rich textures and vibrant colors of the Berber rugs, each one telling a story of the local landscape and culture.

I spent hours wandering through the cooperative, admiring the skill and artistry of the weavers. I chatted with Mohamed from Cooperative Adrar, who showed me progress pictures and videos, and who patiently answered all my questions. He even shared that shipping to the United States usually takes less than a week.

I found a beautiful, hand-woven rug with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. After some friendly bargaining, I purchased it, knowing it would be a cherished reminder of my time in Imlil. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I was glad to contribute to their livelihoods. Plus, Mei has been asking for a new rug for the living room, so this will be a perfect surprise for her.

For lunch, I stopped at Café Taghazout, a charming family-friendly café known for its stunning mountain views and authentic Moroccan cuisine. The café had a cozy ambiance, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I ordered a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, and a refreshing mint tea. The tagine was flavorful and aromatic, filled with tender meat and vegetables. The mint tea, sweet and fragrant, was the perfect accompaniment.

As I savored my meal, I watched families and tourists mingle, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and breathtaking scenery. It was a great place to unwind after a day of hiking and shopping, and I appreciated the opportunity to connect with other people.

In the evening, I had dinner at Riad Jnane Imlil, a beautiful guesthouse with a highly-rated restaurant. The riad was elegantly decorated, with a swimming pool, a sun terrace, and a lush garden. The staff were friendly and professional, making me feel right at home. For dinner, I tried another Moroccan specialty, a couscous dish with vegetables and spices. It was delicious and satisfying, and I enjoyed the cozy ambiance of the riad.

Before heading to bed, I packed my hiking boots and camera, ready for another day of exploration. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the High Atlas Mountains view and perhaps enjoy a drink at the IMLIL VALLEY Garden.

This trip has been a reminder of the importance of disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with nature and culture. As a freelance IT consultant, I spend so much time in front of screens, troubleshooting technical issues and managing projects. It's easy to get caught up in the demands of work and forget about the simple pleasures of life. But travel allows me to break free from the routine, challenge myself, and discover new perspectives.
