Farewell, Kanazawa!

As my final day in Kanazawa unfolded, I found myself reflecting on the incredible journey I've had. From the serene gardens to the bustling markets, this city has woven its way into my heart. Today was a blend of historical exploration and a surprising culinary adventure, a fitting end to my solo trip.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at HUNI. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and the atmosphere felt like dining in a friend's home. I enjoyed a mix of starters, salad, rice, and pasta, all while watching the morning light dance on the Asano River. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. Marie would have loved this place; she always appreciates a cozy spot with a personal touch.

First on the agenda was Shoko-ji, a temple that I was eager to visit. As I approached, I was struck by its fortress-like appearance, with high walls and what looked like a watchtower. It felt like stepping back in time. Designated as a National Treasure in 2022, Shoko-ji has a rich history spanning nearly 500 years. I learned that it flourished under the patronage of the Kaga Domain during the Edo period, which explained the strong samurai influences in its architecture. Walking through the temple grounds, I admired the intricate craftsmanship and refined aesthetics that have stood the test of time. It's truly a serene and majestic place, a testament to the enduring legacy of Japanese Buddhist architecture.

The beauty of Kanazawa lies not only in its well-preserved history but also in its ability to surprise you with unexpected cultural encounters.

Next, I made my way to the Kanazawa Castle Ruins. Although much of the original castle was destroyed by fires over the centuries, the reconstructed parts and the remaining stone walls were impressive. The castle was first founded in 1580 and later taken over by Maeda Toshiie, who significantly built it up. Walking through the grounds, I could imagine the castle in its full glory, the center of power for the Maeda clan for fourteen generations. The vast stone walls showcased different construction techniques from various eras, almost like a stone wall museum. It's fascinating to see how history is layered within these stones.

For lunch, I decided to try Akadama Honten, a Kanazawa Oden restaurant that has been cherished by locals since 1927. Oden is a type of Japanese hot pot, and Akadama Honten is known for its flavorful broth and diverse ingredients. I tried several varieties, including some unique Kanazawa specialties like Kurumafu (wheat gluten) and Bay Scallop. The broth was light and flavorful, and each ingredient had absorbed its essence. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, perfect for a slightly overcast day.

As evening approached, I felt a bit nostalgic, knowing this was my last night in Kanazawa. I wanted to try something completely different for dinner, so I decided on Hay Naku! Philippine Restaurant. It might seem odd to have Filipino food in Japan, but I was intrigued. The restaurant was cozy and welcoming, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered adobo (braised meat in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and black peppercorns), sinigang (sour and savory soup), and halo-halo for dessert (a popular Filipino cold dessert with mixtures of shaved ice and evaporated milk). It was a delightful and unexpected culinary experience, a reminder of the diverse flavors the world has to offer. It was a nice change of pace, and the halo-halo was a refreshing treat.

To cap off the night, I ventured to the Kanazawa Music Bar. The bar had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a great collection of vinyl records and a fantastic sound system. I ordered a persimmon-infused old fashioned, which was both unique and delicious. The music, a blend of jazz and mellow rock, created a perfect ambiance for reflecting on my journey. It was a sophisticated and relaxing way to end my trip. I could picture Marie enjoying the ambiance and the music.
