Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco: Chefchaouen
Day 8: A Day Immersed in Chefchaouen's Blue Hues
Exploring the enchanting blue streets of Chefchaouen, savoring local cuisine, and discovering hidden gems with friends in Morocco.
Lost in the Azure Embrace of Chefchaouen
Today was a day where the color blue took on a whole new meaning. I found myself wandering through a city painted in every shade imaginable, from the softest sky blue to the deepest indigo. It was an experience that felt both surreal and deeply calming, a true feast for the senses.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Chez Hicham. Marie and I shared stories from our childhoods in Belgium, laughing over the silly things we used to do. The Moroccan sun streamed through the windows as we ate, adding a golden hue to the already vibrant atmosphere. I opted for the Moroccan chicken salad, while Marie enjoyed the lemon chicken. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. I even managed to practice my French with the waiter, stumbling over a few words but getting my order across nonetheless. It's these small interactions that make travel so rewarding.

Our first stop was the famed Blue House Town. As we approached, the buildings seemed to glow, drawing us in like moths to a flame. The architecture was stunning, each house a unique masterpiece of color and design. We spent hours wandering through the narrow alleyways, snapping photos and marveling at the intricate details. I even managed to get a few shots that I think will look great framed back in my Antwerp home.

Chefchaouen is a place where the simple act of walking becomes an adventure, each corner revealing a new vista of breathtaking beauty.
Next on our list was Dar Antonio Chefchaouen. This guesthouse stood out with its blend of traditional Moroccan design and modern comforts. We were greeted with warm hospitality and spent time simply relaxing in its courtyard, soaking in the peaceful ambiance. It was a welcome break from the bustling streets, a chance to catch our breath and reflect on the beauty we had already witnessed. I made a mental note to recommend this place to anyone planning a trip to Chefchaouen; it truly is a hidden gem.

For lunch, we ventured to Café Restaurant Marisco Twins. The restaurant was lively, filled with both locals and tourists eager to sample the cuisine. We decided to try their signature Moroccan dishes, and I opted for the lamb tagine, while my friend went with a seafood dish. Each bite was an explosion of flavor, a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Morocco. The spices were different from what I’m used to cooking with, but I was determined to try and replicate the tagine back home. Maybe Marie and I could even host a Moroccan-themed dinner party for our friends in Antwerp.

After lunch, we stumbled upon Bazar Ahmed, a vibrant shop filled with local crafts and souvenirs. I couldn't resist picking up a few items, including a beautiful hand-painted bowl and a set of intricately carved wooden figures. I haggled with the shopkeeper, a friendly man who shared stories about his family and his craft. It was a fun experience, and I felt like I was not just buying souvenirs but also connecting with the local culture.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way to RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ for dinner. The restaurant exuded an air of elegance, with its refined decor and intimate setting. We savored traditional Moroccan dishes, enjoying the quiet ambiance and reflecting on the day's adventures. The couscous was especially delicious, light and fluffy, and I made sure to compliment the chef on his skills. It was the perfect way to end our day in Chefchaouen, a culinary experience that complemented the visual feast we had enjoyed all day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Derb El Assri and Bab El Hammar. I'm eager to see what other hidden corners and breathtaking views this blue city has to offer. Perhaps we'll find another charming café or a hidden courtyard where we can simply sit and soak in the atmosphere. I'm also looking forward to trying some more local cuisine; I've heard great things about the food at BILMOS, where we're planning to have breakfast.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can still feel the magic of Chefchaouen lingering in the air. The blue hues have seeped into my soul, leaving me with a sense of peace and wonder. It's a place that I know I will never forget, a city that has captured my heart with its unique beauty and vibrant culture.
