A Day of Blue Hues and Hidden Views

Today was all about embracing the unique charm of Chefchaouen, a city that has completely captivated Marie and me. It’s hard to believe this Moroccan adventure is nearing its end, but we’re determined to make the most of every moment, soaking in the culture and sights.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at BILMOS. Marie had read rave reviews about their vegan options, and since she’s been trying to eat more plant-based meals, she was eager to try it out. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea, of course. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the relaxed atmosphere was the perfect way to start our explorations.

Fueled up, we decided to wander through Derb El Assri, one of Chefchaouen's most iconic blue alleyways. The narrow streets were a photographer's dream, every corner revealing a new, stunning vista of blue-washed buildings and vibrant local life. I couldn't resist snapping photos of the intricate details, from the colorful flower pots adorning the walls to the ornate doorways that seemed to whisper stories of centuries past. Marie was particularly fascinated by the local artisan shops, filled with handmade crafts and souvenirs. We even picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic tagine as a memento of our trip.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its striking blue color, but in the warmth and authenticity of its people and culture.

Next on our list was Bab El Hammar, a historic gate that serves as a cultural beacon in Chefchaouen. The walk there was an adventure in itself, navigating the labyrinthine streets and soaking in the local atmosphere. Bab El Hammar offered an intimate look at the region's rich history and artistic heritage. The museum itself, with its striking blue-washed walls, was a visual feast. Inside, we explored exhibits showcasing traditional crafts and artworks, each telling a story of Moroccan traditions. The knowledgeable staff shared anecdotes and insights, enriching our visit and deepening our appreciation for the local culture.

For lunch, we ventured to Restaurant populaire, a recommendation from a local we met earlier in the week. It was a bustling spot, filled with both tourists and locals, which I always take as a good sign. I decided to try the tagine, a classic Moroccan dish that never disappoints. The rich, flavorful stew was cooked to perfection, and the tender meat practically melted in my mouth. Marie opted for a vegetarian couscous, which was equally delicious, packed with fresh vegetables and aromatic spices. It was a truly authentic culinary experience, and the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring.

As the afternoon sun began to dip, we found ourselves drawn to Café Mundial. This cozy café is a beloved spot for both locals and tourists, blending Moroccan hospitality with a diverse menu. We settled into a comfortable outdoor seating area and ordered mint tea, a staple of Moroccan culture. The café was buzzing with activity, people chatting, laughing, and enjoying the laid-back vibe. It was the perfect place to unwind and soak in the atmosphere of Chefchaouen.

For our final dinner in Chefchaouen, we chose Galitos, enticed by the reviews praising their Mediterranean cuisine. The warm atmosphere and beautifully decorated interior made for a pleasant dining experience. I opted for a seafood dish, while Marie chose a pasta dish. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion.

As we walked back to Hotel Casa Miguel, the city was bathed in the soft glow of the evening lights. The blue walls seemed to glow even brighter, casting an almost magical spell over the town. I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a unique and beautiful place. Tomorrow marks the end of our stay in Chefchaouen, but we'll be making the most of it with visits to Jamaa and Bab Chaouen. I’m also hoping we can squeeze in some time at B & H Art Shop, before we bid adieu to this enchanting blue pearl. I'm already looking forward to sharing more stories and photos from our adventures tomorrow.

Despite having forgotten my portable phone charger and hat, I’m happy to report that the camera, sunscreen, travel guidebook, and reusable water bottle have been more than enough to keep me happy and hydrated throughout the day. I'm also starting to think about how I might incorporate some of the blue hues of Chefchaouen into my antique restoration work back in Antwerp. Maybe a subtle touch on a vintage cabinet? The possibilities are endless!

Before heading to bed, Marie and I sat on our hotel balcony, sipping mint tea and reflecting on our day. We talked about the friendly locals, the stunning architecture, and the delicious food. We agreed that Chefchaouen had exceeded all of our expectations and that it was a place we would never forget. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow would bring even more adventures in this magical blue city.

Tomorrow, on our final day, we plan to visit Jamaa and Bab Chaouen, hoping to soak up every last bit of this beautiful city before heading back to Tangier. I’m also hoping we can squeeze in some time at B & H Art Shop. It’s going to be hard to say goodbye to this enchanting place, but I know we’ll carry the memories with us always.

I'm already looking forward to sharing more stories and photos from our adventures. Good night from Chefchaouen!
